MY HUSBAND AND SON GAVE MY PLACE TO HER Novel Cover

MY HUSBAND AND SON GAVE MY PLACE TO HER

For three years, she starved herself and worked double shifts, saving $320 each month toward her son's first car. Then she saw the title—and another woman's name: Vanessa, her ex-husband's girlfriend. Her eighteen-year-old son had known for a week. When she refused to pay, he shoved the insurance binder at her, insisting she was good for nothing but footing bills. Richard funded the car, and the three drove off, leaving her stranded twelve miles from home. They expected her to return, subdued. Instead, her wedding ring sat on the table—and she was gone.

Chapter 3

The loading circle spun on the bright screen. I stared at the bold letters spelling PENDING. A second later, the text flashed green. COMPLETED.

My eyes dropped to the account total at the top of the banking app. The numbers updated in real time.

Fourteen thousand, eight hundred and sixty dollars vanished.

Three thousand, nine hundred and sixty dollars remained.

"You stole it," I said, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper.

Richard slipped the phone back into his pocket. "I allocated it."

"That's our joint emergency fund!" I shouted, stepping closer to him. "That money is for the house. It's for Cody's medical bills. You just drained eleven grand to buy a car and put your girlfriend on the title?"

"Keep your voice down," Richard warned, glancing around the showroom. "You're embarrassing yourself."

"I'm embarrassing myself?" I grabbed the edge of the glass desk. The metal frame rattled under my grip. "You just emptied the safety net I built. If the furnace breaks next month, how do we pay for it?"

"We'll save it back," Richard replied, brushing a piece of lint off his lapel. "If you just stop making a scene and go back to work, the account will recover. It's not a big deal."

"Not a big deal." I looked at Cody. He refused to meet my gaze, keeping his eyes glued to the shiny floor tiles. "Cody, do you understand what he just did? That money was supposed to cover your urgent care visits. Your dental emergencies."

"Dad said it was fine," Cody mumbled.

"That money took three years to save," I said, my voice rising. "Three years of picking up extra shifts on holidays. I missed Thanksgiving dinner to build that safety net."

"And now it's serving its purpose," Richard countered smoothly. "It's providing for our son. You should be happy."

"Providing for him? You just handed ownership to a woman who has zero financial stake in his life." I pointed a shaking finger at Vanessa. "If she decides to sell this car tomorrow, she legally can. And Cody gets nothing."

"I'd never do that," Vanessa gasped, clutching her chest. "Cody and I've a wonderful relationship."

"You have a relationship built on my stolen money," I shot back.

Vanessa stepped forward, smoothing the front of her beige trench coat. "Richard is right, Beth. You're overreacting. The vehicle is paid for. The transaction is complete. We should be celebrating Cody's milestone, not arguing over a temporary dip in savings."

"You have no right to speak to me," I snapped.

Marcus cleared his throat. The salesman edged his way back to the desk, holding two shiny sets of fobs. He placed them carefully on the glass, keeping his hands entirely clear of my space.

"The paperwork is processing," Marcus stammered, his eyes darting between Richard and me. "The vehicle is ready in the delivery bay. Both sets of keys are right here."

Vanessa immediately reached out. Her manicured fingers closed over the spare fob.

"Why do you need a key?" I demanded, staring at her hand.

"I'm the co-owner," Vanessa said brightly. "It's standard procedure. Plus, if Cody ever needs me to move it out of the driveway, I need access."

She dropped the fob into her designer tote bag with a metallic clink.

Cody snatched the main set. He finally smiled, the tension leaving his shoulders. "Thanks, Dad."

He did not thank me.

I looked down at the floor. My gray insurance binder lay open, the pages scattered across the ceramic tile. I knelt, gathering the papers. My hands shook so badly I ripped the edge of the maintenance schedule. I forced the pages into the rings and snapped them shut. The sound echoed sharply in the quiet showroom.

I stood up and dropped the binder onto the glass desk.

"Listen to me very carefully," I said.

Richard sighed. "Beth, we're done here."

"I'm done," I corrected, looking directly at my son. "Cody, you have your car. But I'll not pay the insurance premium."

Cody's smile vanished. "What?"

"I'm not insuring a vehicle owned by Vanessa," I continued, tapping the plastic cover of the binder. "I'm not co-signing a liability waiver. I'm not paying for your gas, your oil changes, or your tire rotations. If this car breaks down, don't call me."

"Mom, you can't do that!" Cody protested. "Insurance for an eighteen-year-old is crazy expensive. Dad doesn't have that kind of extra cash every month."

"Your father just stole eleven thousand dollars," I reminded him. "I'm sure he can find another account to drain."

"Beth, stop being vindictive," Richard snapped. "You're punishing your own son because you're jealous of Vanessa."

"Jealous?" A dry laugh tore from my throat. "I'm protecting what little financial independence I've left."

"Then Vanessa can pay it," I told Cody.

Vanessa scoffed. "That's absurd. You're his mother."

"And you're the legal owner of the asset." I picked up my purse. "Enjoy the maintenance costs."

I turned and walked toward the glass double doors leading to the delivery bay.

The new Ford sat under the bright fluorescent lights, its dark blue paint gleaming. For months, I had pictured this exact moment. I had imagined sitting in the passenger seat, handing Cody his new registration, and watching him pull out of the lot for the first time.

I reached the car and yanked the passenger door open. I tossed my heavy leather purse onto the pristine seat, leaning in to inspect the interior I had just been forced to buy. The new car smell hit me, sharp and chemical.

Footsteps echoed behind me.

Cody marched into the bay, the keys jingling in his hand. Vanessa walked right beside him, her shoes smacking the concrete floor.

"I call shotgun," Vanessa declared, her tone light and teasing.

"Obviously," Cody replied, laughing.

I straightened up, blocking the open doorway. "I'm riding back to the house with him."

"There's no room up front, Beth," Vanessa said, stopping two feet away. "I need to show him how to use the navigation system. I negotiated the tech package, remember?"

I ignored her and looked at my son. "Cody. I paid for this car. I'm sitting in the front."

Cody stopped. He looked at me, then at Vanessa. His jaw tightened.

He stepped around me and reached into the vehicle.

His hand bypassed the leather upholstery and grabbed the straps of my purse.

He pulled my bag off the passenger seat, turned around, and pushed it into my chest.
