Chapter 1

The Aurelia's grand ballroom glowed like a jewelry box. Crystal chandeliers threw soft light across white linen tables. Candles flickered in glass hurricanes. The air smelled like champagne and imported roses.

I stood near the entrance in my simple black dress. The fabric was expensive, but nobody here would know that. I looked like I'd borrowed it.

That was the point.

I'd spent three years hiding what I owned. Three years pretending I was just Jayla, the consultant. The girl who took the subway. The girl who cooked dinner in Elliott's tiny kitchen and laughed when he complained about his landlord.

The girl he could love without wondering what she was worth.

Tonight was supposed to be the night he asked me to marry him. I'd seen the jeweler's receipt on his desk two weeks ago. He'd been so careful to hide it, turning the paper over when I walked in. I'd pretended not to notice.

I scanned the room. Elliott's business partners clustered near the bar. His college friends occupied a corner table. Everyone looked polished. Important.

Then I saw the dress.

It moved through the crowd like a flame. Red silk. Plunging neckline. A slit that climbed to mid-thigh.

I'd ordered that dress three months ago. For tonight. For this exact moment.

Siena Morales wore it like a declaration of war.

She stood at the center of a circle of Elliott's colleagues, one hand resting on her hip, her head tilted in that way she did when she wanted to look concerned. Her voice carried across the marble floor.

"I'm just saying, someone should tell Elliott the truth." She paused. Let the silence pull everyone closer. "That girl he's with? Jayla? She's not what she seems."

My chest tightened.

"I have it on good authority," Siena continued, her voice dropping to a stage whisper that somehow reached every corner of the room, "that she's a sugar baby. Being passed around by old Wall Street men. I mean, how else does a girl like that afford to be here?"

The whispers started immediately. A woman near the champagne tower turned to stare at me. A man in a gray suit leaned toward his wife and muttered something behind his hand.

I went completely still.

The ballroom blurred at the edges. My fingers curled into my palms. I knew this room. Every floorboard. Every exit. Every security camera angle.

I owned this room.

I pulled my phone from my clutch and stepped into the service corridor. My hands didn't shake. I dialed Nico Porter's direct line.

He picked up on the first ring. "Ms. Gordon."

"Siena Morales is in the ballroom," I said quietly. "I want her removed from the property immediately. And blacklisted."

"Understood. I'm on my way."

I ended the call. Took a breath. Turned back toward the ballroom.

That's when I heard the sobbing.

Siena's voice, high and broken, echoed through the open doors. "She threatened me, Elliott! She called me a whore! I was just trying to warn you and she—"

I stepped into the doorway.

Elliott stood in the center of the room, one arm around Siena's shaking shoulders. His jaw was tight. His eyes found mine across the crowd.

They were cold.

"Jayla." His voice cut through the whispers. "We need to talk. Now."

He crossed the room in four strides. His hand closed around my upper arm. Not gently.

"Elliott, what are you—"

"Not here."

He pulled me through the service corridor. Past the kitchen. Past the loading dock. Down the concrete stairs to the basement.

I tried to pull free. "Elliott, stop. You're hurting me."

He didn't stop.

We reached a steel door at the end of a dim hallway. A storage closet. No window. No light switch on the outside.

My stomach dropped.

"Elliott, don't."

He shoved the door open. The space inside was black. It smelled like cleaning supplies and cold concrete.

"You need to cool off," he said.

"Elliott, please. You know I can't—"

He pushed me inside.

I stumbled. My shoulder hit the wall. The door slammed shut. The lock turned.

Darkness swallowed me whole.

My lungs constricted immediately. The air felt thick. Wrong. I pressed my palms against the door.

"Elliott!" My voice cracked. "Elliott, let me out!"

No answer.

I couldn't see my hands. Couldn't see the walls. The space pressed in from all sides.

My breathing came in short, shallow gasps. My vision went white at the edges, then black, then white again.

I slid down the wall. My knees hit the concrete floor.

Then I heard her voice. Siena. Right outside the door.

"You know what's funny, Jayla?" She sounded calm. Almost cheerful. "Elliott and I spent a weekend in the Hamptons two months ago. Just the two of us. A little cabin by the water. Very romantic."

I couldn't breathe.

"He told you he was visiting his parents, didn't he? He's such a good liar. Always has been."

My chest was caving in. The walls were closing. I couldn't get air.

"We've always been close, Elliott and I. Closer than you ever were."

I tried to scream. Nothing came out.

Then I heard footsteps. Fast. Heavy.

"Open this door." Nico's voice. Sharp. Absolute.

"I don't have the key," Siena said. "Elliott locked her in. She was hysterical."

"Step back."

A crash. Metal bending. The door flew open.

Light poured in.

Nico crouched beside me. One hand steady at my back. "Breathe, Ms. Gordon. You're out. You're safe."

I gulped air. My hands shook. My vision cleared slowly.

Two security guards stood in the hallway. Siena stared at me, her expression unreadable.

Nico didn't move until I nodded.

Then he stood. Turned to face the hallway.

And everything changed.
