Chapter 2

Nico rose to his full height. He straightened his cuffs. Two precise movements. Then he turned to face the corridor.

The crowd had followed us down. Elliott's colleagues. His business partners. The woman in the champagne-colored gown who'd been whispering near the tower. They pressed against the walls, phones out, eyes wide.

Elliott stood closest. His face had gone pale. His mouth hung slightly open.

Siena's smirk was still frozen on her lips.

Nico's voice cut through the silence. Calm. Clear. The same tone he'd use to confirm a reservation.

'Ladies and gentlemen.' He paused. Let the words settle. 'You are in the presence of Ms. Jayla Gordon. Sole owner and chairwoman of The Aurelia's parent company, Gordon Luxury Group.'

Someone's phone clattered to the floor.

'A billion-dollar hospitality empire,' Nico continued. 'Every floor of this hotel. Every chandelier. Every glass of champagne you've consumed this evening. Ms. Gordon owns it all.'

The silence that followed was total.

I could hear my own breathing. Still uneven. Still shallow.

Elliott's mouth opened. No sound came out.

Siena's expression collapsed like wet paper.

I pressed my palm flat against the concrete wall. Pushed myself upright. My legs shook. I locked my knees.

The corridor stretched in front of me. Twenty feet of polished marble between me and the woman wearing my dress.

I crossed it slowly.

Siena didn't move. Her eyes went wide. Her hands came up, palms out.

'Jayla, I didn't—'

I met her eyes. Held them for one full second.

Then I slapped her.

The sound echoed off the marble. Sharp. Clean.

Siena stumbled back. Her hand flew to her cheek. Her mouth opened and closed.

I turned.

Elliott stood three feet away. The champagne glass still in his hand. His eyes searched my face.

'Jayla.' His voice cracked. 'I didn't know. I swear, I didn't—'

I pulled the engagement ring off my finger.

It had taken me two months to design. White gold. A single emerald-cut diamond. Simple. Perfect.

I held it between my thumb and forefinger.

Then I dropped it into his champagne glass.

The ring sank through the bubbles. Hit the bottom with a soft *plink*.

I looked at Elliott. His jaw. His eyes. The face I'd woken up thinking about for three years.

'The engagement is cancelled,' I said quietly. 'We're done.'

I walked past him.

Nico fell into step beside me. Two security guards followed at a distance.

The corridor opened into the lobby. Marble floors. Crystal fixtures. The scent of lilies from the arrangement on the concierge desk.

Flashes went off.

Paparazzi lined the entrance. Cameras. Microphones. A wall of light.

I didn't stop.

I crossed the lobby. My heels clicked against the marble. Steady. Even.

The cameras followed every step.

I pushed through the glass doors. The night air hit my face. Cold. Sharp.

A town car waited at the curb. Nico opened the door.

I slid into the back seat. The door closed. The engine hummed.

Through the tinted window, I watched The Aurelia's entrance. Elliott appeared in the doorway. He stood there, champagne glass still in his hand, staring at nothing.

Siena pushed through the crowd behind him. Her red dress bright against the marble. Her hand still pressed to her cheek.

The cameras turned on them.

The car pulled away from the curb.

I leaned my head back against the leather seat. Closed my eyes.

My hands were still shaking.

But I was out.

---

By morning, my phone had four hundred notifications.

I ignored them.

I sat in my penthouse on the Upper East Side. Floor-to-ceiling windows. The city stretched out below. Sunrise painted the buildings gold.

I opened my laptop.

The images were everywhere.

*Jayla Gordon, billionaire hotel chairwoman, walks out of The Aurelia after public betrayal.*

*Elliott Jensen seen holding engagement ring in champagne glass as fiancée reveals secret empire.*

*Siena Morales identified in crowd photos — slapped by woman she slandered as gold-digger.*

The video clip had gone viral. The slap. The ring drop. My exit through the lobby.

Ten million views in six hours.

The comments scrolled past.

*She OWNS the hotel. Icon behavior.*

*That man locked a claustrophobic woman in a closet. He deserves worse.*

*The way she walked out. Ice cold. Perfect.*

I closed the laptop.

Poured myself coffee. Black. No sugar.

The city hummed below.

I didn't feel victorious.

I felt empty.

Three years. Gone. The man who'd pulled me out of the elevator. The man I'd cooked dinner for. The man I'd hidden my entire empire from because I wanted him to love *me*.

He'd locked me in the dark.

I set the coffee cup down.

Picked up my phone.

Scrolled to Elliott's contact.

My thumb hovered over the delete button.

Then I stopped.

I stared at his name on the screen.

And I smiled.

Not a warm smile.

Not the smile I used to give him.

Something colder.

I put the phone down.

I wasn't going to delete him.

Not yet.

I had other plans.
