Chapter 3

I found it on a Wednesday morning.

Not by accident. I wasn't scrolling mindlessly through our shared credit card portal looking for something to do. I was building a case. Line by line. Charge by charge. Petra had told me to document everything, so I did.

I had a spreadsheet open on one monitor. The credit card statements on the other. I was logging dates, amounts, locations. Building a timeline. Making it airtight.

Then I saw it.

Le Bernardin. $12,487.63. Three months ago.

I stopped typing.

I knew that date. I knew it the way you know the date of a car accident or the day someone dies. It was the night I bled.

Twenty-six weeks pregnant. Cramping so hard I couldn't stand up straight. I'd driven myself to the hospital because Kade had a "work thing" he couldn't miss. I'd texted him from the ER. Then from the exam room. Then from the bed where they hooked me up to monitors and told me not to move.

He'd sent back a thumbs up emoji at 11:43 PM.

I'd lain there alone until three in the morning, staring at the ceiling tiles, listening to the machine beep every time the baby's heartbeat dipped, and I'd told myself he was saving someone's life. That's what surgeons do. They save lives.

I looked at the charge again.

$12,487.63.

Le Bernardin didn't do work events. It did proposals and anniversaries and celebrations for people who wanted to be photographed.

I opened the family group chat.

I didn't have to scroll far. Celia posted constantly. Pictures of flower arrangements. Screenshots of articles about Kade. Passive-aggressive memes about daughters-in-law who didn't call enough.

I found it in under a minute.

The photo was dated three months ago. 9:47 PM.

Isla sat at the center of a long table, her face lit by candles on a towering cake. She wore a silk dress the color of champagne. Her hands were clasped under her chin like a child making a wish. Around her, the Montgomerys raised crystal flutes. Thaddeus on her left. Celia on her right. Kade directly behind her, one hand resting on the back of her chair.

The caption read: *Happy Birthday to our darling girl! Family is forever. đź’•*

I stared at it.

Not at Isla. Not at the cake.

At Kade's hand.

It wasn't just resting on her chair. His fingers were curved over the edge, knuckles brushing her shoulder blade. Casual. Familiar. The way you touch someone when you've done it a thousand times and you don't think about it anymore.

I zoomed in.

His smile was wide. Relaxed. The kind of smile I hadn't seen in months. Maybe longer.

I checked the timestamp on my hospital discharge papers. 3:17 AM.

I looked back at the photo. 9:47 PM.

He'd been there. Raising a glass. Touching her shoulder. Smiling.

While I bled.

I closed the group chat. I saved the screenshot. I added it to the evidence file.

Then I sat very still and I breathed.

In. Out. In. Out.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I didn't throw my phone across the room.

I just sat there and felt something inside me finish breaking.

Not breaking apart. Breaking *clean*. The way a bone breaks when it's been cracked for too long and finally just snaps.

I picked up my phone.

I called Petra.

---

Her office was in Tribeca, all glass and steel and the kind of minimalist furniture that cost more than most people's cars. She met me in the conference room with a leather folio and a pot of coffee that smelled like it had been imported from somewhere with better weather than New York.

"Show me," she said.

I slid my phone across the table.

She looked at the photo. Then the credit card statement. Then the hospital discharge papers. She didn't say anything for a long time.

Finally, she set the phone down and opened her folio.

"Clause Seventeen," she said. "Breach of trust or infidelity. If triggered, the non-breaching party is released from all financial liability. The breaching party assumes full responsibility for all contracted expenses, penalties, and damages."

She turned the page.

"Venue cancellation: $850,000. Vendor penalties: $620,000. Catering and beverage deposits: $340,000. Floral, design, and entertainment: $290,000. Custom gown and tailoring: $210,000. Invitations, photography, videography: $190,000."

She looked up.

"Total potential liability: two point five million dollars. Sole responsibility. Non-negotiable. Fully executable upon dissolution."

I looked at the numbers.

I thought about $2.13 for coffee. I thought about splitting the cost of wedding stamps. I thought about a thumbs up emoji at 11:43 PM.

"Make sure it's bulletproof," I said.

Petra slid a stack of documents across the table.

"Sign here. And here. Initial here."

I signed every page.

My hand was steady.

When I finished, Petra closed the folio and looked at me with something that might have been respect.

"He has no idea, does he?"

"Not yet," I said.

I stood up. I picked up my bag.

"He will."

I walked out of that office into the cold November sunlight and I felt lighter than I had in years.

Six days.
