Chapter 4

I called the production team on a Thursday morning.

The wedding was six days out. The venue had already confirmed the AV setup—two massive screens flanking the altar, a livestream feed contracted to run from ceremony start to the last toast. Two million viewers, minimum. Simone had made sure of that.

The production coordinator was a young guy named Tyler. Eager. Efficient. He picked up on the second ring.

'Ms. Parker,' he said. 'Everything's on track for Saturday.'

'I know,' I said. 'I'm calling about the screen sequence. I want to add a presentation segment. A surprise for the guests. Personal touches. You know how it is.'

A pause. 'Of course. We can build that in right after the processional.'

'Perfect,' I said. 'I'll send you the deck by end of day. I just need one thing confirmed—the display runs from my laptop only. Not the venue's system. Not the coordinator's tablet. Mine.'

Another pause. Shorter this time. 'That's a little unusual—'

'I'll add a five-hundred-dollar equipment handling fee to your invoice,' I said. 'For the inconvenience.'

'Done,' he said. 'Send the file whenever you're ready.'

I hung up and opened the presentation.

I had built it the way I built every major auction reveal—clean, sequenced, nothing wasted. Each slide timed to land like a gavel strike.

Slide one: our Venmo history. His requests in red. My payments in green. Two years of $2.13 coffees and $47.50 deposits and $18.00 stamp books, stacked in a column so neat it looked like art.

Slide two: the wire transfers. $180,000 to one account. Monthly. Consistent. Two years.

Slide three: the Mount Sinai incident report. Date. Time. Four lines of clinical text. Then the voicemail transcript beneath it—*Mochi got hit by a car. I need you NOW*—and the timestamp. 21:44.

Slide four: the birthday photo. Isla at the center of the table. Kade's hand on her chair. Crystal flutes raised. The caption: *Family is forever.* Beside it, my hospital discharge papers. 3:17 AM.

Slide five: forty-three seconds of video. Room 1407. Bare hands. His voice, low and tender: *Hold still. It'll feel better in a minute.*

Slide six: the prenuptial agreement. Clause Seventeen, highlighted in yellow. The total: $2,500,000. Sole liability. Non-negotiable.

I looked it over once. Then I sent it to Tyler.

Then I made coffee and waited for Kade to come home.

---

He'd been different this week.

Not suspicious. The opposite. He was looser. More comfortable. Like a man who had already decided how the story ended and was just waiting for the credits to roll.

He came in at seven, set his bag down, and looked at me the way he always did when he was about to say something he thought was generous.

'You're handling all of this really well,' he said. He poured himself a glass of water. 'The Isla thing. I know it wasn't easy to agree to, but it shows a lot of emotional maturity.'

I was standing at the counter. I looked up and smiled.

'Thank you,' I said.

'It's important.' He leaned against the refrigerator. His posture was easy. Relaxed. 'Especially right now, with the hormones. Pregnancy makes everything feel bigger than it is. More threatening.' A small pause. 'You know that, right? That you've been a little overly sensitive lately?'

I looked at him across the kitchen.

He had no idea. That was the thing I kept coming back to. He was standing in my kitchen, drinking water from my filtered pitcher, in an apartment I paid for, and he was explaining my own emotions to me with the calm authority of a man who had never once considered that he might be wrong.

I tapped my index finger once against the counter.

Just once.

'You're right,' I said. 'I've been working on that.'

He smiled. Warm. Proud of me, even. He crossed the kitchen and kissed my forehead.

'That's my girl,' he said.

I stood very still and let him.

After he went to shower, I opened my laptop. I pulled up the presentation one more time. Checked the file. Checked the timing. Checked the livestream contract—my name, my access, my control.

Everything was in order.

I closed the laptop and folded my hands over my stomach.

The baby moved. A small, slow roll, like she was settling in.

'I know,' I said quietly. 'Almost.'

Six days.

I had built the lot. I had set the sequence. I had confirmed the audience.

All that was left was to open the bidding.
