Chapter 2

I called Isla on a Tuesday morning, standing at the window of my office with the Hudson glittering forty floors below.

I'd rehearsed it twice. Not the words—those came easy. The tone. Warm. Open. The kind of woman who had nothing to hide and everything to offer.

"Isla," I said when she picked up, my voice lifting like we were old friends reconnecting over lunch. "It's Evangeline. I wanted to call personally. Kade told me his idea, and honestly? I love it."

A half-second pause. She hadn't expected warmth.

"Oh," she said. Then, recovering, that syrupy lilt sliding into place: "Evangeline. That is so sweet of you."

"I mean it. You're important to him, and that means you're important to me." I let that land. "I want us to be close. Really close. The way family should be."

She melted a little. I could hear it—the small exhale, the shift in register. Vanity is so predictable.

We talked for nineteen minutes. I asked about her vision for the maid of honor dress. I asked how long she'd known Celia. I asked it the way you ask about the weather—casually, between sips of coffee.

"Oh, Celia and I text every single day," she said, and didn't bother to lower her voice. "She's basically my mother at this point. Thaddeus actually called me their real daughter last week." A little laugh. Pleased with herself. "He said it at dinner. The whole family was there."

"That's so beautiful," I said. "What restaurant?"

She told me. Le Bernardin. A Tuesday. Three weeks ago.

I had been in the hospital that Tuesday. Twenty-six weeks pregnant, monitoring a blood pressure spike, alone in a paper gown on a crinkly exam table, texting Kade that everything was probably fine.

He'd replied with a thumbs up emoji.

Le Bernardin.

"We are going to have so much fun together," I told Isla, and I smiled so hard my cheeks hurt.

I hung up and opened my evidence file.

I typed for four minutes without stopping.

---

One week before the wedding, Kade told me he had a late consult. He kissed my forehead. He smelled like that expensive soap.

"Don't wait up," he said.

I waited exactly eleven minutes after the door closed. Then I picked up my bag and followed him.

I already knew where he was going. His credit card was linked to our shared account—a detail he'd never thought to change, probably because he assumed I didn't check. I did check. I'd been checking for two weeks.

The charge had posted at 6:48 PM. The Meridian Hotel, Midtown. Room service for two.

I took a cab. I wore a coat I'd bought specifically for this—dark, unremarkable, nothing he'd recognize in a hallway. I took the stairs to the fourteenth floor because the elevator cameras would have caught my face.

Room 1407 was at the end of the hall.

The door wasn't fully latched. An inch of light bled into the corridor. Inside, the television was on low—some home renovation show, the kind of background noise people use when they don't want silence to feel too intimate.

I pressed myself to the wall beside the gap and I looked through.

Kade was kneeling.

Not beside the bed. Not at the minibar. He was kneeling on the carpet behind Isla, who was face-down across the edge of the mattress, a hotel robe pushed up, and his hands—bare, gloveless, no sanitizer, no gloves, nothing—were working with the quiet, practiced tenderness of a man who had done this before.

His voice was low. I could hear it clearly.

"Hold still," he said. "It'll feel better in a minute."

She made a small sound. He kept going.

I pressed record.

My hand did not shake. I want to be precise about that. There was no trembling, no sharp intake of breath, no moment where I had to steady myself against the wall. I simply held the phone level and I recorded forty-three seconds of footage, and I thought about the morning he'd moved to the guest room because my first-trimester nausea was, in his words, *a lot to be around.*

I thought about the hand sanitizer he kept on his nightstand. The way he'd once asked me to please not touch his water glass when I had a cold.

I thought about my mother's chest, open on a table, at 9:47 PM.

I stopped recording. I lowered my phone. I stood in that hallway for exactly three more seconds—not because I needed to collect myself, but because I wanted to be sure I had everything.

I did.

I walked back to the stairwell. I took it all the way down. I stepped out onto the sidewalk and the cold November air hit my face and I hailed a cab.

On the ride home, I opened my evidence file.

I added one video.

I added one note: *Room 1407. Bare hands. Forty-three seconds. His voice: tender.*

Then I closed the file, folded my hands over my stomach, and watched the city move past the window.

Seven days.

I had everything I needed.
