Chapter 2

Tuesday lunch with Bellamy was the only appointment I never rescheduled. Same café. Same corner table. Same time.

He was already there when I arrived, my usual black coffee waiting. No cream. No sugar. He'd remembered for twenty years.

"You look tired," he said.

I slid into the chair across from him. "I'm fine."

"You're touching your wrist."

My hand froze. I hadn't realized I was doing it. The scar. Always the scar when I was pretending everything was okay.

Bellamy didn't push. He never did. He just changed the subject, told me about a disastrous hotel renovation in Boston, made me laugh about a bridezilla who'd demanded her reception be held in a pool. Twenty minutes stretched to forty. I didn't want to leave.

"Thank you," I said finally.

"For what?"

"For this. For always being here."

Something flickered across his face. Something I couldn't quite name. Then he smiled. "That's what friends do."

I walked back to the Williamson Group offices feeling steadier. The feeling lasted exactly twelve minutes.

Petra Voss was waiting in my office. My CFO didn't wait unless something was wrong.

"We have a problem," she said. No preamble. That was Petra. She dropped a thin folder on my desk. "Financial irregularities. Client referrals."

I opened the folder. A list of names. Companies. Contacts. All Williamson Group relationships. All redirected to the same recipient.

Salazar Studio. Interior Design.

"Who authorized this?" I asked.

Petra's smile was sharp. "No one. That's the problem."

I scanned the documentation. Email threads. Introduction requests. Media placements. Every single one routed through Colby's personal account. Using my family's name. Our connections. Our reputation.

"How long has this been happening?"

"Six weeks. Maybe longer. We only caught it because one of the referred clients called to thank you personally, and you had no idea what they were talking about."

Six weeks. The same six weeks Colby had been increasingly absent. Increasingly distracted. Increasingly somewhere else.

"Who is Marina Salazar?" I asked.

Petra's expression shifted. Not quite sympathy. More like vindication. "I was hoping you'd ask that."

She pulled out her phone, tapped twice, and turned the screen toward me. A website. Clean design. Minimalist aesthetic. A woman's face smiling from the About page.

Marina Salazar. Interior Designer. Brooklyn-based. Rising star.

She was beautiful. Dark hair. Warm eyes. The kind of effortless elegance I'd spent three years trying to perfect.

"She had a car accident seven years ago," Petra said quietly. "Severe amnesia. No memory of her previous life. It was all over the local news at the time."

Seven years ago. Right before I met Colby.

"And now?" My voice sounded far away.

"Three months ago, she started posting about recovered memories. A miracle, she called it. Getting her life back."

Three months ago. Right when Colby proposed.

I stared at Marina's photograph. At her smile. At the studio she'd built on my family's connections without ever knowing my name.

"Pull everything," I said. "Every referral. Every contact. Every introduction made using Williamson resources."

Petra's smile widened. "Already done. I was waiting for authorization."

"You have it."

She left. I sat alone in my office, the folder open in front of me, and called Colby's assistant. Not Colby. His assistant. The one I'd helped him hire. The one whose salary came from Williamson-backed funding.

"Miss Williamson," she answered immediately. Nervous. She knew.

"I need Colby's calendar for the past two months. Everything. Personal and professional."

"I... I'm not sure I'm authorized to—"

"You're authorized. Send it now."

The file arrived three minutes later. I opened it. Scrolled through. And there it was. A pattern. Brooklyn addresses. Afternoon blocks marked "personal." Florist charges. Dinner reservations for two.

All the days he'd been too busy for me.

I pulled open my desk drawer. Found the small envelope I'd been carrying since the engagement party. The one Bellamy had quietly handed me when Colby disappeared to take a call. "He dropped this," Bellamy had said. "Thought you should give it back to him."

I'd never opened it. Never looked inside.

I opened it now.

A photograph. Worn at the edges. Creased from years in a wallet. Two teenagers. A boy and a girl. Smiling. In love.

Colby and Marina. Seventeen years old. Before the accident. Before the amnesia. Before me.

He'd carried her picture through our entire relationship. Through every dinner. Every business meeting. Every night he'd slept beside me.

I set the photograph on my desk next to Petra's folder. Evidence. All of it. Not of something broken.

Of something that had never existed at all.

My phone buzzed. A text from Colby.

Colby: Working late again. Don't wait up.

I stared at the message. At the lie. At the three years of lies I'd been too desperate to see.

I didn't respond.

Instead, I opened a new message. To Bellamy.

Me: Can you come over tonight? I need to talk to someone.

His response came immediately.

Bellamy: I'm already on my way.
