Chapter 3

I chose The Plaza because Colby proposed there.

Not at The Plaza, exactly. In the lobby bar. Between meetings. He'd ordered champagne and slid the ring box across the table like a contract addendum. "This makes sense for both of us," he'd said. I'd cried anyway. Told myself the practicality was just his way. That love didn't need poetry when it had commitment.

Now I was back. Private dining room. White roses. String quartet warming up in the adjacent hall. The table was set for two.

I'd told Colby about this dinner a week ago. Confirmed it three days ago. Texted him this morning with the room number.

My phone sat face-up on the white tablecloth. 7:02 p.m. The waiter poured wine I didn't ask for. I thanked him anyway.

Across town, Marina Salazar was walking into the Metropolitan Pavilion for the Interior Design Showcase. I knew because I'd arranged it. Anonymous tip to the event coordinator. Rising star. Recent recovery story. Perfect human interest angle. They'd called her studio yesterday. Invitation. Press opportunity. Career-making exposure.

Colby would go with her. I knew he would.

7:15 p.m. My phone lit up.

Colby: Something came up with the Series B review. I'll make it up to you.

I stared at the message. This morning, Petra had shown me the funding documents. The Series B closed two weeks ago. There was no review. There was never a review.

I picked up my wine glass. Took one sip. The Chardonnay was perfect. Expensive. Wasted.

I set the glass down.

The string quartet started playing in the other room. Something classical. Something about longing. I didn't know the name.

The waiter approached. "Should I hold the first course, Miss Williamson?"

"No need." I stood. My chair scraped against marble. "He's not coming."

"I'm so sorry. Should I—"

"Keep the flowers. Donate the food. Charge everything to my account."

I walked out through the lobby where he'd proposed. Past the bar where I'd said yes. Out onto Fifth Avenue where the evening traffic hummed and the city lights blurred and I finally let myself know what I'd known for three years.

He was never going to choose me.

Suki was waiting at the curb. She took one look at my face and opened the car door without speaking. I slid into the back seat. She didn't ask if I was okay. She knew better.

"Mount Sinai," I said.

Her eyes met mine in the rearview mirror. "Are you sure?"

"I'm sure."

We drove uptown in silence. I watched the city pass. All those lit windows. All those lives. All those people who probably weren't sitting alone at engagement dinners waiting for men who would never show up.

The hospital lobby was too bright. Fluorescent. Sterile. A place for endings disguised as healings.

The transplant coordinator met me in a private office. Dr. Chen. She'd walked me through the donation process six months ago. Explained the risks. The recovery time. The gift I'd be giving.

"Miss Williamson." She stood. "I wasn't expecting to see you until next month's final screening."

"I need to revoke my consent."

Her expression shifted. Professional concern. "Is this about the procedure risks? Because we can discuss—"

"It's not about the risks."

She studied my face. Then nodded slowly. Pulled forms from a file cabinet. Set them on the desk between us.

"I need to inform you that Rylee Nichols's condition is time-sensitive. Without a donor match—"

"I know." My voice was steady. "This isn't about Rylee."

Dr. Chen slid a pen across the desk. I picked it up. The forms were dense. Legal language. Medical terminology. Paragraphs about informed consent and voluntary participation and the right to withdraw.

I signed every page.

My signature didn't shake. My hand didn't tremble. I initialed. Dated. Signed again.

When I finished, Dr. Chen collected the forms. "I'll process these immediately. You understand this decision is final?"

"I understand."

She walked me to the elevator. Pressed the button. We waited in silence.

"For what it's worth," she said quietly, "you gave six months of hope. That's not nothing."

The elevator doors opened. I stepped inside.

"It wasn't enough," I said.

The doors closed. I watched the floor numbers descend. Touched my left wrist. The scar was still there. Thin. Pale. Permanent.

I let my hand fall.

Suki was waiting in the car. She didn't ask what I'd done. She already knew. She'd been there for every humiliation. Every excuse. Every night I'd waited for Colby to come home.

"Where to?" she asked.

I looked out at the city. At the hospital behind me. At the life I was leaving in that building.

"Home," I said. "My home. Not his."

She pulled into traffic. I leaned back against the leather seat. Closed my eyes.

My phone buzzed. I didn't check it.

I already knew it wasn't from anyone who mattered.
