Chapter 1

The salon smelled like champagne and lilies. I stood on the pedestal in front of three mirrors, watching myself from every angle. The gown was perfect. Vera Wang, cathedral train, hand-beaded lace that caught the light when I moved. The kind of dress you dream about when you're a little girl playing bride in your mother's closet.

I looked beautiful.

I also looked alone.

"He's just running late," I said to no one in particular. The seamstress nodded and kept pinning the hem. She'd heard me say it twice already in the last forty minutes.

My phone buzzed on the velvet chair beside the platform. I stepped down carefully, train pooling behind me, and checked the screen.

Bellamy: You'll look beautiful. You always do.

I smiled despite myself. Bellamy always knew when I needed to hear something kind. I started typing a response, then stopped. My fingers hovered over the screen. I wanted to tell him about the dress. I wanted to send a photo. But that felt wrong somehow. Like I was showing it to the wrong person.

I tucked the phone away and climbed back onto the pedestal.

"Should we wait a bit longer?" the seamstress asked. Her voice was gentle. Professional. She'd probably seen this before. Grooms who didn't show up to fittings. Brides who made excuses.

"He'll be here," I said. "He's just busy with work. The Series B funding round is closing this week, and—"

My phone rang. Colby's name flashed across the screen.

I grabbed it so fast I nearly tripped on the train. "Hey! Are you close? I'm still at—"

"Something came up." His voice was clipped. Distracted. "I can't make it."

I stared at my reflection in the mirror. The bride stared back, phone pressed to her ear, smile frozen in place.

"What came up?"

"Just something I need to handle. I'll explain later."

"Colby, we scheduled this three weeks ago. The seamstress is here, and I'm literally standing in the dress right now, and—"

"Fallon." He said my name like I was being unreasonable. "I said I'll explain later."

The line went dead.

I stood there holding the phone. The seamstress looked away. The salon suddenly felt too bright, too white, too full of mirrors showing me the same girl from every angle, alone in a wedding dress.

"I'm sorry," I said quietly. "He had an emergency."

"Of course." The seamstress smiled professionally. "We can finish the fitting without him. Most grooms don't come anyway."

But Colby wasn't most grooms. He was my groom. The man I'd spent three years loving, funding, supporting. The man whose company existed because I'd opened every door my family's name could unlock. The man whose sister was alive because I'd given a piece of my own body.

I touched my left wrist without thinking. The scar from the bone marrow harvest was thin and pale, barely visible unless you knew to look for it. But I always knew where it was.

The seamstress finished pinning in silence. I changed back into my street clothes in the private dressing room, carefully hanging the gown on its padded hanger. Through the curtain, I could hear her on the phone scheduling another appointment.

When I came out, she handed me a garment bag. "The alterations will be ready in two weeks. Congratulations, Miss Williamson."

I drove home through midday Manhattan traffic, the garment bag laid carefully across the back seat. At a red light on Park Avenue, I checked my phone. No follow-up text from Colby. No explanation. No apology.

But there was another message from Bellamy: Let me know if you need anything.

I stared at those seven words. Bellamy had sent me some version of that text at least once a week for the past three years. Sometimes more. He was always there. Always ready. Always asking for nothing in return.

I started to type a response, then deleted it. Then typed it again.

Me: I'm fine. Just tired.

The lie tasted familiar.

That night, Colby came home after midnight. I was still awake, sitting in the dark living room of his Tribeca loft, still in my clothes from the fitting. He didn't turn on the lights. Just dropped his keys on the entry table and walked past me toward the bedroom.

"Where were you?" I asked.

He stopped. Turned. In the shadows, I couldn't read his face.

"I told you. Something came up."

"What came up?"

"Does it matter?"

The question hung in the air between us. I wanted to say yes. I wanted to say it mattered very much. I wanted to ask why he couldn't spare two hours for our wedding, for me, for the life we were supposed to be building together.

Instead, I said, "The dress is beautiful."

"I'm sure it is." He rubbed his face. "I'm exhausted, Fallon. Can we do this tomorrow?"

He disappeared into the bedroom before I could answer.

I sat in the dark for another hour, touching the scar on my wrist, telling myself there was an explanation.

There was always an explanation with Colby.
