Chapter 2

The morning sun cut through the heavy curtains. I woke up at seven, completely rested. For the first time in ten years, my eyes didn’t burn.

At seven-fifteen, a soft knock sounded at the door.

Julien’s team walked in. Six people moved with quiet speed. They carried garment bags, velvet cases, and steamers.

The dress they brought made the ivory gown hanging in the wardrobe look like a sad rehearsal. It was pure silk, sculpted to fit my body like armor. It had clean lines, a dramatic low back, and a sweep of diamond-dust tulle.

The lead stylist pinned my hair into a sleek, elegant twist. "Mr. Carr requested no heavy makeup," she said quietly. "He said you don't need a mask."

I looked at myself in the full-length mirror. My skin looked bright. My shoulders were back. I didn't recognize the small, exhausted girl who used to beg Dean for scraps of affection.

Across the private corridor, another scene was playing out.

I knew the exact moment Dean stepped into my suite.

I could almost hear the silence when he saw the glass table. The heavy manila folder was gone. In its place lay a pile of white confetti—the shreds of my thirty percent equity agreement. Next to it sat his engagement ring.

Down the hall, a door slammed. Dean’s voice echoed, sharp and furious.

"What do you mean, unavailable?" he barked into his phone. "Mr. Vance, we have the front rows reserved for you! Hello? Hello?"

He was dialing every investor on his list. Nobody who mattered picked up. They had already RSVP’d to Carr Capital.

By eleven, the Grand Ballroom wing was split in two.

On the west side, Dean and Hayley held their substitute ceremony. It was a complete disaster.

The room was half-empty. Forty or fifty junior employees and distant cousins sat in scattered rows. The floral arrangements were sparse and wilted, thrown together at the last minute. Hayley stood by the altar in a cheap lace dress. Under the bright chandeliers, the fabric looked stiff and synthetic. Her smile was frozen, her eyes darting toward the empty chairs.

"Where is Seraphina?" someone whispered in the third row.

"Did she leave him?"

"Why is the little sister up there?"

Hayley’s knuckles turned white around her bouquet.

On the east side, separated by heavy double doors, another world existed.

Three hundred of Manhattan’s most powerful figures filled the hall. Real estate barons, tech titans, city officials. The room smelled of fresh white gardenias. A string quartet played a low, steady melody.

The double doors opened for me.

I didn't have a father to walk me down the aisle. I didn't need one. I walked alone.

Every step was slow and deliberate. I didn't look down. I didn't look at the crowd.

At the end of the runner stood Julien Carr.

He wore a tailored black tuxedo. His posture was perfect. When our eyes met, his gaze didn't waver. There was no pity in his face. Just a steady, quiet intensity that made the floor feel solid under my feet.

I reached the altar. Julien took my hand. His fingers were warm and dry.

"You look stunning, Seraphina," he murmured.

"You're right on time," I said.

"I'm never late for things that matter."

The officiant spoke the vows. We didn't need a long speech.

Julien slipped a ring onto my finger. It was a five-carat emerald-cut diamond, clear and flawless. It felt light on my skin.

Then I took the simple platinum band from the velvet pillow. I slid it onto his left ring finger.

*BANG.*

The heavy doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open.

Dean stood in the entryway. His tie was crooked. Sweat glistened on his forehead, and his chest heaved. He had run across the corridor, drawn by the music and the sea of black town cars outside.

Hayley stumbled in right behind him. Her veil was askew, and her face was flushed with panic.

"Dean, wait—" Hayley gasped, reaching for his arm.

Dean didn't hear her. He stared at the stage, his face entirely drained of color.

His eyes locked onto Julien Carr. Then they shifted to the front row. He saw the city mayor. He saw the hedge fund founders who had refused to return his calls for five years. They were all sitting here, sipping champagne, celebrating another man.

And then he looked at me.

I was standing beside the most powerful billionaire in the city, wearing a dress that cost more than his entire wedding budget.

"Seraphina?" Dean’s voice cracked across the silent room.

I didn't turn around.

I didn't flinch. I didn't even blink.

To me, the sound of his voice was just background noise. Like a car horn on the street below.

"By the power vested in me," the officiant smiled, "I now pronounce you husband and wife."

Julien stepped closer. He raised a hand and gently cupped my cheek. His thumb brushed over my cheekbone.

"May I?" he asked softly.

"Yes," I whispered.

He leaned down and kissed me. It wasn't rushed. It was firm, warm, and possessive.

Behind us, a loud gasp broke from Hayley’s throat. A camera flashed. Then another.

By evening, the photos were everywhere.

*The Carr Union: Manhattan’s Royal Wedding at The Plaza.*

Dean Murray wasn't even mentioned in the caption. He was just a blurred figure standing near the exit doors, cut out of the frame.
