Chapter 3

Four days after the wedding, Julien and I went to the Manhattan City Clerk’s Office. We needed to sign the official certificate.

The morning air was crisp. Julien held my hand as we walked up the stone steps. His grip was warm and steady.

Then I heard the sniffles.

Near the brass railings by the entrance, a small crowd had gathered. In the center stood Hayley. She held her phone high on a selfie stick. Her mascara was pristine, but two perfect tears rolled down her cheeks.

Dean stood beside her. His arms were crossed, his jaw clenched tight.

"I just don't understand how family could do this," Hayley sobbed into the lens. Her voice was soft and shaky. "My own sister... she knew Dean and I were in love. She took him out of pure spite. She wanted to hurt me."

The screen was buzzing with comments. Heart emojis and angry faces flashed across her display. A few passersby had stopped to watch the drama unfold.

Dean saw me first. His eyes widened, and he took a step forward. "Seraphina—"

I didn't answer. I didn't even look him in the eye.

Julien let go of my hand. He didn't rush. He walked straight into Hayley’s frame.

Hayley froze. Her phone wobbled.

Julien stood tall, blocking Dean and Hayley from the shot. He stared directly into the phone lens. His face was like carved stone. When he spoke, his voice was smooth and calm. It sounded like a man reading a weather report.

"Let me be clear," Julien said. "I am Julien Carr. The woman behind me is my wife."

The chat on the screen exploded. *Wait, Julien Carr? THE Julien Carr?*

Julien didn't blink. "The man standing behind that screen exploited my wife’s labor for seven years. He embezzled her equity. And he couldn't even stay faithful while she built his empire from the ground up."

Hayley’s jaw dropped. "Turn it off, Dean!" she hissed under her breath.

"If anyone has questions," Julien continued, his voice icy and clear, "Carr Capital's legal team is available twenty-four-seven."

He turned his head slightly toward Dean.

Julien didn't shout. He didn't raise a fist. He just looked at him with a dead, absolute stillness. It was the look a hawk gives a mouse before the strike.

Dean swallowed hard. His face went gray. He backed up until his heels hit the stone wall.

The comments on the livestream were rolling too fast to read now.

*Wait, Dean Murray cheated on her?*

*Hayley stole her sister’s fiancé?*

*Look at her face, she’s totally guilty!*

*Unfollowing right now.*

Hayley scrambled to hit the screen. The broadcast cut out with a sharp beep.

Julien walked back to me. He offered his arm. "Ready, darling?"

"Ready," I said.

We walked inside and signed our papers. By the time we walked down to the private parking garage, the screen recording had already hit three million views on Twitter.

Sitting in the back of Julien's town car, I pulled out my tablet.

"Phase One?" Julien asked, looking over at me.

"Phase One," I replied.

Dean had spent months trying to convince me to give him my company shares as a wedding present. He thought he could steal thirty percent of Murray Real Estate for zero dollars. He thought I was still the quiet girl who did all the work in the dark.

I opened my email. I sent a formal notice to the board of directors.

Under our corporate charter, I had the right of first sale. An institutional investment group had offered top dollar for commercial real estate shares just last week. The market was at its absolute peak.

I authorized the immediate liquidation of my entire thirty percent stake.

Across town, in the glass tower of Murray Real Estate, Dean was sitting in the main boardroom. He was pitching the Apex Group—the biggest client he had chased all year. A contract that could keep his business afloat.

His phone buzzed on the mahogany table.

Then it buzzed again. And again.

A red notification took over the presentation screen behind him. It was an automated system alert sent to all senior executives:

*Notice of Capital Withdrawal: 30% Share Liquidation Confirmed.*

*Seller: Seraphina Collins.*

*Payout Total: $42,500,000.*

The board members gasped. The lead investor from Apex frowned, took off his reading glasses, and stood up from the table.

"Dean," the investor said, his voice flat. "Your chief strategist just pulled forty million out of your reserves. What the hell is going on here?"

Dean’s hands began to shake. He tapped the screen frantically, but the numbers were already grayed out. The money was gone.

Back in the quiet car, my phone chimed with a bank deposit confirmation.

Forty-two million dollars.

It was the price of seven years of missed sleep. Seven years of swallowed insults. Seven years of standing behind a man who didn't deserve to hold my coat.

I closed the tablet and slid it into my leather bag.

Julien reached over and covered my cold fingers with his warm hand. He didn't ask if I was okay. He knew I was.

"Now," I said softly, looking out at the Manhattan skyline, "we take the rest."
