Chapter 1

The clock on the Plaza Hotel nightstand read 2:14 AM.

I couldn't sleep. My chronic insomnia was like an old friend who never knew when to leave. I lay on the king-sized bed, staring at the ceiling. Across the bridal suite, my wedding dress hung on the wardrobe door. It was an ivory gown, soft and heavy with delicate lace. Dean had picked it out himself.

Next to the bed sat a thick manila folder. On top of it, a neon yellow Post-it note glowed under the lamp. Dean’s sharp handwriting stared back at me: *Sign before we head downstairs, babe. Our fresh start.*

Inside was the stock transfer agreement. It gave him my thirty percent equity in Murray Real Estate—the company I had spent seven years building from scratch after walking away from my consulting career. A hollow ache formed in my stomach. Something felt off, but I couldn't put my finger on it.

Then I heard it.

A laugh came through the wall from the adjoining executive suite.

It was Dean’s laugh. Low and smug.

A second later, another voice chimed in. A soft, breathy giggle.

My heart skipped. I knew that giggle anywhere. It belonged to my younger sister, Hayley.

I slipped out of bed. The hardwood floor was cold beneath my bare feet. Step by step, I moved toward the connecting door and pressed my ear against the wood.

"Dean, stop," Hayley whined playfully. "What if she wakes up?"

"She won't," Dean murmured. I heard the rustle of sheets and a wet kiss. "Her head is full of sleeping pills. She’s out cold."

"Are you sure the plan will work tomorrow?" Hayley asked. Her voice carried that sweet, helpless tone she used when she wanted our parents to buy her things. "What if people notice it's me under the veil?"

"Nobody will question a thing," Dean replied, his voice muffled by her skin. "We announce a sudden bridal emergency. You step in to save the family honor. By the time anyone figures it out, we’ll be married. And the best part? She signs over the shares in the morning. Thirty percent of the company, handed to us for free. It’s our payday, baby."

Hayley giggled again. "A year of sneaking around was totally worth this."

"You're the only woman I want, Hayley. Seraphina was just the engine to get us here. She’s boring. Exhausting."

I stood frozen against the door.

Memories slammed into my chest, one after another.

I remembered sitting in a freezing hospital room two years ago, donating pints of blood when Hayley needed an emergency transfusion. I was so anemic afterward that I passed out on the tile. Dean hadn't even looked up from his phone. *Stop being so dramatic, Seraphina,* he had snapped.

I remembered working eighty hours a week, building our proprietary client software, only to see Hayley's name listed as the creator in the press release.

I remembered Dean splashing a glass of ice water directly onto my face at five in the morning because I had overslept after two hours of sleep, screaming that his breakfast meeting mattered more than my headaches.

I waited for the tears to come. I waited for the crushing pain.

Nothing came.

Instead, a strange, ice-cold silence washed over me. My hands, which usually shook when I was tired, went completely still.

I stepped away from the door.

I walked over to the desk and picked up the stock transfer agreement. I didn't hesitate. I gripped the thick stack of paper and ripped it in half. Then in half again. The white shreds fell around my feet like confetti.

Next, I looked down at my left hand. The three-carat diamond ring Dean had given me felt heavy and cheap. I pulled it off my finger. It hit the glass tabletop with a sharp *clink*.

I took out my phone.

I scrolled past my contacts, past Dean's name, down to a number I had saved two years ago and never dared to dial.

Julien Carr.

He was the CEO of Carr Capital. A man whose financial empire made Dean look like a kid running a lemonade stand. At a charity gala two years ago, when I had slipped away to hide in the hotel lounge, he had sat three seats away. He had slid a drink toward me and handed me a plain black card.

*If you ever need anything,* he had said quietly, *call this number.*

I pressed call.

It didn't even ring twice.

"Seraphina." His voice came through the speaker, low, deep, and completely awake.

The sound of my name on his tongue made my chest tighten. I kept my chin up and forced my voice steady. "You once said if I ever needed anything."

"I did."

"I need a husband," I said. "By tomorrow morning."

A pause stretched across the line. It wasn't hesitation. It was the calm breath of a man who had been waiting for the clock to strike twelve.

"I'll have a marriage license ready by 8 AM," Julien said. His tone was smooth, steady as stone. "And Seraphina?"

"Yes?"

"I would have waited longer," he whispered. "But I'm glad you didn't make me."

"See you tomorrow, Julien."

"See you tomorrow, wife."

He hung up.

Within minutes, my phone began to buzz with silent notifications. Julien's team was moving. Messages from high-end jewelers. A confirmation from City Hall's private registrar. Word spread through private channels like wildfire. Julien was redirecting three hundred of Manhattan's elite—mayors, hedge fund founders, foreign dignitaries Dean had begged to meet for years—straight to The Plaza’s Grand Ballroom.

A replacement couture gown was already on its way up via private courier.

I set my phone face down on the bedside table.

For the first time in years, the knot in my chest loosened. The buzzing in my brain stopped. I lay down on the white sheets, closed my eyes, and slipped into the deepest sleep I had known in a decade.
