Chapter 2

I didn't cry that night. I told myself that mattered.

By six in the morning, I was still sitting on the edge of the hotel bed, the jade bracelet warm from my own hand. The window had gone from black to gray. I watched it happen and thought about eight rounds of IVF. Eight. I remembered every single one — the bruises on my stomach from the injections, the blood draws, the mornings I threw up from the hormones and Carson held my hair back and told me I was strong. I believed him. I believed all of it.

Something in me had gone very still. Not broken. Still. Like a lake before a storm.

I picked up my phone and called Diana Lowe.

Diana had been my nurse coordinator at the clinic since round three. She was the one who always double-checked my dosages, who slipped me peppermint candy after the retrievals, who once told me, quietly, that she didn't understand why someone as healthy as me kept failing. I'd forgotten that comment until now. It sat in my chest like a stone dropped in water, rings spreading outward.

"Emmeline?" Her voice was groggy. It was barely seven.

"I need you to pull my full file," I said. "Everything. Every cycle, every note, every access log."

There was a pause. Long enough that I heard her sit up, the rustle of sheets. "That's not exactly protocol."

"I know."

"Emmeline, what's going on?"

"I need to know why I failed eight times," I said. My voice didn't shake. I was proud of that, in a distant way, like watching someone else manage to stand upright. "I need to know if it was me."

Another pause. Then, quieter: "It wasn't you."

Something in my chest cracked open, just slightly. "What do you mean?"

"Meet me," she said. "Not at the clinic. There's a coffee shop two blocks east. I'll bring what I can."

I got there before her. I ordered jasmine tea and didn't drink it, just held the cup for the heat. When Diana walked in, she didn't smile. She sat down across from me and slid a manila envelope onto the table, sealed, her hand staying on it a second longer than necessary.

"I should have said something sooner," she said. "I told myself it wasn't my place."

"Tell me now."

She opened the envelope herself. Laid the pages out one by one, like a dealer laying down a losing hand. "Your dosages were altered. Three cycles at least, maybe more. Small changes. Nothing you'd catch unless you were looking hard — a few milligrams here, a shifted appointment there. Enough to tank a cycle without it looking deliberate."

I stared at the numbers. They meant nothing to me and everything to me at once.

"Who had access?" I asked.

Diana's jaw tightened. She pulled out the last page — an access log, timestamps down the left column, names down the right. My stomach dropped before I even found it.

*Z. Flores.*

"She told the front desk she was managing your calendar," Diana said. "On Mr. Moore's behalf. She had login credentials. I don't know who authorized that, but—"

"I do," I said.

She pushed one more sheet across the table. A printed email chain, forwarded and forwarded again until it landed, apparently, in the wrong inbox — someone's mistake, someone's conscience, I didn't know. Carson's name at the top. Two lines, cold and administrative.

*Give Zoya full access to Emmeline's treatment schedule. She'll handle logistics so I don't have to.*

I read it four times. Then I folded it, very carefully, along its existing crease, like that could undo it.

"I'm sorry," Diana said. "I should have told you months ago. I kept thinking I was wrong. That there had to be another explanation."

"There wasn't," I said.

She reached across the table and touched my hand — not my wrist, she seemed to know better than that — and left without saying goodbye, because there was nothing left to say.

I went back to my room and spread it all across the desk. Dosage logs. Access records. The email. I made more tea I didn't drink. I didn't sleep. I built the timeline instead, cycle by cycle, failure by failure, laying my whole ruined effort to become a mother out on the desk like evidence at a trial, because that's exactly what it was.

Eight rounds. Eight engineered failures. And one child, right now, still inside me, who had somehow survived it anyway — too stubborn to be erased, just like her mother.

By the time the sun came all the way up, I wasn't crying anymore, and I wasn't shaking. My face in the mirror over the desk looked like someone else's. Calmer. Colder.

I touched my bare wrist where the bracelet should have been and thought of my mother, who used to say some doors you don't reopen — you just build a new house.

I picked up my phone and started making a list. Not of nursery colors this time.

Of names. Reporters. Board members. Edison Moore.

By morning, I knew exactly what I was going to do.
