Chapter 3

The hospital was called Whitmore Women's Health, a small private clinic on the Upper East Side that didn't take walk-ins. I'd found it at two in the morning, scrolling through options with the same flat focus I used to plan the wedding seating chart. I picked it because it was clean and quiet and nobody there would recognize my face from the society pages.

I checked in under my own name. Nobody stopped me.

The intake nurse was kind in a brisk, practiced way. She asked me to change into a gown, checked my blood pressure, asked me twice if I understood the procedure. I said yes both times. My voice came out steady. I didn't know where that steadiness was coming from, only that I needed it, so I kept it.

"Is there someone we should call?" she asked, clipboard against her chest. "A partner, a family member, someone to be with you after?"

"No," I said. "There's no one."

She didn't push. She wrote something down and left me alone in the small pre-op room with its beige walls and its ticking clock. I sat on the edge of the table in my paper gown and looked at my bare wrist. No bracelet. I'd left it in my coat pocket because they told me to remove all jewelry. My hand kept drifting there anyway, fingers closing around nothing.

When they wheeled me back, the lights above were the flat, shadowless kind. I stared up at them and didn't blink for a long time.

"You'll feel a small pinch," the anesthesiologist said.

I thought about the ultrasound two weeks ago. The technician's voice, bright and warm. *It's a girl.* I thought about Carson's face — how he'd smiled, but only with his mouth. I thought about eight rounds of injections, eight rounds of hope, the bruises on my stomach I used to press just to feel something real.

I didn't cry. I kept my eyes open until they weren't.

When I woke, the room was quiet. Machines beeped somewhere far away. My body felt hollowed out, scraped clean, lighter and heavier at the same time. A nurse checked my IV line and adjusted my blanket without meeting my eyes, the way people do around grief they don't know how to hold.

I signed every form myself. Consent, discharge instructions, follow-up care. My handwriting didn't shake. I noticed that, distantly, the way you notice a stranger's calm in a burning building.

The forms had a line for emergency contact. I left it blank.

By early afternoon I was propped up against the pillows, IV still taped to the back of my hand, when I asked the nurse for my phone and my bag. She hesitated — I was pale, she said, I should rest — but I told her I needed to make one call, and something in my face must have told her not to argue.

I'd built the file overnight, back in the hotel room, while the sun came up over a city that didn't know yet what it had done to me. It was all there. The forged marriage certificate, the one Carson himself confessed didn't exist. Diana's access logs, timestamped and initialed. The email — *give Zoya full access to Emmeline's treatment schedule* — screenshotted and printed and copied into six separate folders. A handwritten note, the only part that wasn't evidence, just truth.

*He told me to understand. Now you will.*

I opened my laptop on the hospital tray table, the one usually reserved for gelatin cups and water pitchers. My hands were steady. I want to remember that. Whatever else happened after, my hands did not shake.

I attached the files. I typed the addresses one by one — Edison Moore, the Moore family board, three editors at three different papers who'd covered Carson's rise for years and would recognize a real story when it landed in their inbox, Carson's own board of directors, and last, the Manhattan District Attorney's office, general counsel line, the kind of address that exists for exactly this reason.

I read it all one more time. Not to second-guess. Just to be sure every word was doing what I needed it to do.

Then I pressed send.

No dramatic music. No flash of lightning outside the window. Just a small chime from my laptop, and then nothing, the same quiet hum of the hospital room, the same beige walls, the same drip of the IV keeping time like a clock.

I closed the laptop and set it aside. My hand went to my wrist again, out of habit, and again found nothing there.

I thought about my mother, who never got to meet Carson, who never got to warn me. I thought about the necklace I sold to save a man who would go on to smash the one thing I had left of her. I thought about the girl who would have been born in five more months, who never got the chance to disappoint anyone, least of all me.

Outside, the city kept moving, indifferent and enormous, the way it always did. I lay back against the pillows and closed my eyes, not to sleep, just to rest inside the silence I had made.

It was done. All of it. And there was no calling it back.
