My Fiancé Humiliated Me for His Dying First Love Chapter 1

The Grand Ballroom at The Plaza was packed. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceilings, casting bright light over three hundred of New York’s most powerful people. Diamond necklaces glittered. Champagne glasses clinked.

I stood at the center table in a custom ivory gown. The silk hugged my waist, falling straight to the marble floor without a single crease. Beside me stood Clark Stevens, my fiancé.

Three years ago, Clark was a broke graduate student in a frayed coat. I paid off his student loans. I bought him his first tailored suit. I opened doors for him, putting him in front of my father, Lawrence Lane, until Clark was named Vice President of Lane Enterprises. I had built him into the polished, confident man holding the microphone tonight.

I looked at him and thought, *We finally made it.*

Clark raised his glass to the crowd. He smiled his easy, charming smile.

"To my beautiful fiancée, Saylor," his voice came smooth over the speakers. "The woman who believed in me before anyone else did. Everything I have, everything I am today, is because of—"

The heavy double doors at the back of the room swung open.

The sound cut through his words. Heads turned. Clark stopped talking. His glass hung frozen in mid-air.

A woman stood in the doorway. She wore a washed-out trench coat that looked far too big for her. Her face was pale, almost gray, with dark purple shadows under her eyes. Tears tracked down her hollow cheeks.

It was Mallory Fisher. Clark’s college girlfriend. The one who had vanished years ago.

I watched Clark’s face. In three years, I had seen him confident, stressed, and ambitious. But I had never seen what washed over him now. His eyes went wide. His lips parted. Then his brows pulled together in a look of absolute, raw tenderness. A tenderness he had never once offered me.

Mallory took three shaky steps forward. Her voice wasn’t loud, but in the dead silence of the ballroom, it carried to every table.

"I'm sorry, Clark," she whispered, her chin trembling. "I know I shouldn't be here."

Nobody moved. Clark’s fingers tightened on the microphone stem until his knuckles turned white.

"Everyone told you I left for the money," Mallory cried softly. She pressed a thin hand to her chest. "They said I walked away because I didn't love you. But that was a lie. I had to leave, Clark. I was diagnosed with leukemia. It's terminal."

A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom. Socialites leaned in. Whispers broke out like a sudden hiss of steam.

"The doctors said I don't have much time left," she sobbed, looking straight at him. "I just... I couldn't leave this world without seeing you one last time."

I looked at Clark. I waited for him to handle it. I waited for him to act like the VP of a billion-dollar empire.

Instead, he let go of the microphone.

It fell onto the linen-covered table with a dull thud, sending a loud screech through the audio monitors. He didn't say a word to me. He didn't look at me. He didn't even blink in my direction.

Clark stepped off the raised platform. He started walking toward her. Then he broke into a run.

Three hundred pairs of eyes watched him cross the floor. Phones came out. Little red lights blinked on as cameras began to record.

Clark reached Mallory and gathered her into his arms. He buried his face in her neck. Her arms wrapped around his shoulders, her thin fingers clutching the expensive Italian wool of the suit I had bought him last Tuesday.

"I'm here," Clark choked out, loud enough for the first few rows to hear. "Mallory, I'm right here."

The whispers grew louder. Pitying looks shifted toward the stage. Toward me.

*Poor Saylor.*

*Left at the altar before they even reached it.*

*All that money, and he still wants the dying ex.*

I felt the heat of their stares on my skin. I didn't flinch. My hand remained completely steady.

I looked down at the champagne flute in my hand. The bubbles were still rising to the rim, crisp and golden. Slowly, carefully, I set the glass down on the table next to the dead microphone. It didn't make a sound.

I smoothed the front of my gown. My posture was straight. My chin was up.

I turned away from the crowd and walked toward the private service exit behind the head table. I didn't run. I didn't rush. The door clicked shut behind me, cutting off the murmur of the room.

My driver was waiting by the curb on Fifth Avenue. He hurried to open the door, his eyes darting to my face, looking for tears. He found none.

"Home, Miss Lane?" he asked quietly.

"Just drive, Thomas," I said, stepping into the back seat.

The heavy door shut, sealing out the Manhattan night. Inside the car, my phone began to buzz frantically. Text after text lit up the screen. Friends, board members, society reporters.

*Saylor, are you okay?*

*Did you see what he did?*

*Call me right now.*

I didn't open a single message. I turned the phone face-down on the leather seat.

People think heartbreak always makes a sound. They think it comes with crying, screaming, and tearing things apart.

It didn't.

Inside me, everything went very, very quiet.

It wasn't the quiet of a woman who was broken. It was the quiet of an architect stepping back to look at a faulty building—right before pressing the button to bring it down.
