Chapter 2

My father called three times before I answered.

"Whitney, we need to talk about this Damien situation."

I stood at the hotel window, watching traffic move through the street below. Yellow cabs. Delivery trucks. People who had their own problems.

"There's nothing to talk about," I said.

"Sweetheart, I know you're upset. But ending an engagement over a work disagreement—"

"It's not a work disagreement."

"—is extreme. We've known the Lawsons for thirty years. Damien's a good man. He made a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes."

I pressed my palm against the cold glass. "Dad, I can't explain right now."

"Then come home. Let's sit down, all of us. Work this out like adults."

"I have to go."

"Whitney—"

I ended the call. Ten seconds later, my mother texted: *Your father's worried. So am I. Please talk to us.*

I typed back: *I'm fine. I need time.*

I didn't tell them what I'd heard outside Damien's office. I didn't tell them about the files or the timestamps or the nights I'd spent building something he'd handed to someone else like a party favor. They weren't ready to hear it. They'd known Damien since he was twelve. They'd toasted our engagement at the country club. They'd already ordered their outfits for a wedding that was never going to happen.

I turned off my phone and went back to my laptop.

---

At the office, Zaria started appearing everywhere I was.

Monday morning, she stood near my workstation, talking loudly to another intern about her "exciting new opportunities" and how the fellowship would "open so many doors." She laughed too much. She glanced over twice to see if I was listening.

I kept my eyes on my screen.

Tuesday, she walked past my desk three times in an hour. Once with coffee. Once with a folder. Once with nothing, just a slow deliberate path that ended at Damien's office.

Wednesday, she wore the red dress again.

Sarah noticed. "Is she serious right now?"

"Let her," I said quietly.

"You're way calmer than I'd be."

I wasn't calm. I was collecting data. Every smug smile. Every pointed comment. Every performance. Zaria needed an audience. She needed me to see her winning. That need was useful.

I made a note in my phone: *Subject requires validation. Compulsive confessor.*

---

Thursday afternoon, I went to the break room for coffee. The machine was slow. I stood there watching it drip, counting seconds.

"Whitney."

I turned. Zaria stood in the doorway, holding her own cup. She smiled. Not friendly. Triumphant.

"I wanted to say something," she said, walking closer. "I know the award situation was awkward for you. But honestly? The best woman won. And I think you should learn to be gracious in defeat."

I looked at her. Twenty-six, maybe twenty-seven. Perfect skin. Perfect hair. Perfect confidence of someone who'd never actually lost anything.

"Congratulations on the fellowship," I said. My voice came out soft. Curious. "You must be so excited."

She blinked. She'd expected anger. "I am. It's a huge opportunity."

"The framework you used in the proposal was really strong. The regression model."

"Thank you." She lifted her chin slightly. "I worked hard on it."

"How long did it take you to build?"

"Oh, you know. A few weeks. The data modeling was complex."

I nodded slowly. I reached into my pocket and tapped my phone screen twice. Record. "So Damien didn't help you with the technical components?"

"Well, he gave me guidance. He's a great mentor."

"Guidance," I repeated. "Like showing you examples?"

Zaria's smile widened. She leaned against the counter. "He gave me the files directly. Said I reminded him of himself when he was starting out. It was exciting, you know, receiving a framework like that fully formed. Most interns don't get that kind of access."

I felt something click into place. Clean. Final.

"That must have felt special," I said.

"It did." She looked at me like she was waiting for me to break. "He said I had real potential. Not like people who just do the grunt work."

"Mm."

She pushed off the counter. "Anyway. I hope there's no hard feelings. You'll find your moment eventually."

She walked out. Her heels clicked on the tile. The sound faded down the hallway.

I stood there for five seconds. Then I picked up my phone. I stopped the recording. I played it back. Her voice came through clear. *He gave me the files directly.* Perfect.

I saved it to three separate cloud drives.

Then I poured my coffee. Black, no sugar.

And I went back to work.
