Chapter 3

The hotel room smelled like old coffee and printer ink. I'd asked the front desk to bring up a small business printer three days ago. It sat on the desk now, blinking, humming, working through the night with me.

I played the recording for the third time.

*He gave me the files directly.*

Zaria's voice filled the quiet room. Bright. Proud. The voice of a woman who thought she'd already won.

*He said I had real potential. Not like people who just do the grunt work.*

I let it finish. Then I stopped it.

I sat back in the chair and looked at what I'd built. Two years ago I'd started backing up every file I touched. Habit. Precaution. A small quiet voice I hadn't listened to closely at the time. Tonight, that voice was the only thing between me and the version of my life where I said nothing and let it all happen.

I opened the master folder on my laptop. Thirty-seven files. Every draft of the proposal, saved with system timestamps I couldn't have faked if I'd tried. The revision history stretched back to July. Zaria had submitted her version in October.

I opened the access logs from the shared server. Damien's login. Every date he'd opened my files. Every download. The pattern was almost boring in its clarity. He'd been copying my work for months.

I cross-referenced the recording's timestamp with the access log. Wednesday afternoon at 3:47 p.m., Damien had downloaded the regression model. Thursday morning, Zaria received the file. Thursday afternoon in the break room, she told me exactly that.

Clean.

I made a folder. I labeled it in flat, unemotional language. *Proposal Authorship Documentation.* I copied everything into it. Files. Logs. Recording. A single-page summary I'd drafted myself, written the way I wrote everything for Burke—short sentences, no adjectives, no emotion.

I copied the folder to a USB drive. Then to two encrypted cloud accounts. Then to a second USB drive I locked in the hotel safe.

When I finished, it was past midnight. My neck ached. I stood up and stretched. My reflection in the dark window looked like someone I hadn't fully met yet. Shorter hair. Sharper jaw. No ring.

I'd taken it off Tuesday and put it in an envelope in the safe. I hadn't looked at it since.

I opened my email. I wrote to Burke's assistant, Anna.

*Subject: Request for private meeting — matter requiring Mr. Burke's direct attention.*

*Anna — I'd like to request a slot outside Mr. Burke's normal calendar, tomorrow morning if possible. The matter is confidential and time-sensitive. Twenty minutes should be sufficient. — Whitney Palmer*

I hit send.

I made a fresh cup of coffee I didn't need. I waited.

Four minutes later, my phone buzzed.

*Ms. Palmer — Mr. Burke will see you at 8:15 a.m. His office. — Anna*

I read it twice.

Then I turned off the lamp and lay down on top of the covers, still in my clothes. I didn't sleep, exactly. But I closed my eyes, and my mind finally stopped running.

---

I arrived at the executive floor at 8:03.

Twelve minutes early. Habit. Enough time to settle. Enough time to own the room before anyone else entered.

Anna nodded at me from behind her desk. "He's ready when you are."

I walked to the door and knocked once. Burke's voice from inside: "Come in."

His corner office was quiet. The blinds were half-drawn. He stood at the window with his back to the door, hands in his pockets, watching the city wake up. He didn't turn immediately.

"Ms. Palmer." He turned. His face gave nothing away. "Please."

He gestured to the chair across from his desk. He didn't sit. He walked to the window again.

I stayed standing. It felt right.

"Mr. Burke." I opened my bag and took out the USB drive. I set it on his desk. "Every timestamped draft of the proposal submitted under Zaria Snyder's name. Every metadata log. Every system access record from the shared server showing Damien Lawson downloaded my files across a four-month window."

He looked at the drive. He didn't touch it.

I took out my phone.

"And this."

I played the recording.

Zaria's voice came out of the small speaker. Clear. Unhurried. Every word landing exactly where I needed it to land.

*He gave me the files directly.*

*He said I had real potential.*

Burke did not move. He did not interrupt. His expression stayed exactly as it had been — attentive, unreadable, the face of a man who had learned long ago not to react before he had all the information.

When the recording ended, I turned off the phone.

The office was silent. Somewhere down the hall a phone rang and stopped.

Burke walked to his desk. He looked at the USB drive. He looked at me.

"How long have you had the documentation?"

"The files, two years. The recording, yesterday."

He nodded once. He picked up the drive and closed his hand around it.

"I suspected," he said. His voice was low, even. "I needed this."

He held my eyes.

"Thank you for bringing it to me properly."

I didn't smile. I didn't nod. I felt something inside me — something that had been holding its breath for weeks — finally exhale.

"When would you like to proceed?" I asked.

Burke set the drive on his desk. He looked at it once more, then at the window, then at me.

"Today."

I picked up my bag.

"I'll be at my desk."

I walked out of his office at 8:34.

The hallway looked exactly the same as it had yesterday. It shouldn't have. Everything had changed.
