Every night, Lucian would give me medication and then send me off to the beds of his seven different "buddies." They made a bet: "No protection allowed. Whoever gets her pregnant in a month owes Lucian two million dollars." A month later, I was indeed pregnant. The moment Lucian got the test results, he promptly arranged for an abortion. "Get rid of this kid, and we'll marry right away," he said. I slapped him hard, waving around the marriage certificate. "Get lost. Do not disturb the wedding between me and the baby's father."

"Miss Hoffman, it's not a stomach illness, nor did you eat something bad. You're pregnant." Dr. Lawrence's words echoed in my mind, refusing to fade. Pregnant? I was yet to be married and had barely shared a bed with a man, so how could I be pregnant? Clutching the test results, I was in turmoil. I had no idea how to break this news to Lucian with our wedding just a month away. Would he despise me for this? Would he call off the wedding entirely?

I was still reeling when I overheard Lucian talking to his buddies outside a private booth. "It's been a month. By rights, Liliana should be pregnant by now," one said. "Yeah, the timing seems right. Surely one of us succeeded," another replied. Lucian was there, a cigarette dangling from his fingers, Adrianna, his new personal assistant, perched on his lap. "Tomorrow, I'll take her to the clinic for a check-up," he continued.

My heart was pounding. What did they mean? I couldn't comprehend their conversation. Lucian went on, "If she's really pregnant, you all better be ready to fork over those two million." "Ha, two million each? Like any of us can't pay that?" one quipped. "Lucian, you're truly something else. Most would gamble with their wives; you've bet on your fiancée and the baby inside her," another chuckled. Lucian brazenly moved his hand under Adrianna's skirt. "What can I say? Life's been a dull pond these past few years. Just wanted to liven things up a bit."

Adrianna giggled playfully, "Lucian, are you going to put me through the same tomorrow?" Lucian grabbed her chin, "You? You're not even worthy to share my buddy's bed." His friends raised their glasses in excitement. "Exactly! Who else has a fiancée as stunning as Liliana? Lucian, you're willing to offer her up, and we won't forget your generosity." "Indeed, we agreed that our future wives should be treated the same way. Otherwise, you're out of our circle forever."

A chill ran down my spine; my legs began to tremble. These beasts had used me as a betting chip, and even my child. The worst part—the mastermind was my fiancé. My fingers clenched into fists. I was about to burst through that door and confront this pack of animals when a pair of large hands covered my mouth and dragged me into the adjoining booth.

As my client was getting a little too friendly, Nasir Bradley was enjoying a glass of wine with his assistant nearby. Trying to keep the client happy, I ended up drinking more than I should have and felt on the verge of passing out. Yet Nasir didn’t so much as glance at me; he was too busy picking the olives out of his assistant’s dish, encouraging her to eat. After dinner, the assistant remarked that it had been dull, which was all Nasir needed to hear before pulling over and practically pushing me out of the car to take her to the next event. “This young lady has been working hard lately; I'm just taking her out for some fun,” Nasir said dismissively. “You probably wouldn't understand what the younger crowd is into these days, so it’s best if you don’t come along. Besides, I’m going to make sure she has a great time tonight; we can talk about the marriage license another time.” For five years, Nasir had canceled our wedding plans ninety-nine times. I nodded. If he was always busy, there was really no point in going through with it. From the slightly open passenger window, Leah Palmer stuck out her tongue apologetically, "Sorry, Christina, Nasir's just spoiling me a bit.

The crystal chandeliers of Le Blanc cast a warm glow across the private dining room as I smoothed my navy silk dress—a birthday gift to myself. Five years of marriage to Conner Davis, and I'd learned to keep my expectations modest. A dinner with the Davis Corporation executive team wasn't exactly intimate, but it was something. I caught Marcus Webb's eye across the table. The veteran board member offered a small nod, perhaps the closest thing to warmth I'd receive tonight. Beside me, Conner scrolled through his phone, his attention elsewhere as usual. "Shall we order champagne?" Rebecca Chen, my lead technical architect, suggested with a smile. She knew how much I'd sacrificed for this company—the sleepless nights decoding failing systems, the brilliant solutions I'd whispered in Conner's ear before important meetings. "Excellent idea," Conner replied, finally looking up. "We should celebrate..." His eyes darted to the entrance where his secretary Ivanna Taylor stood, a vision in red that immediately commanded the room's attention.

After Thanksgiving, my husband, Gordon, mysteriously mentioned he had a surprise for me. However, on my first day back at work after the holiday, both my parents were laid off, and my position as the marketing director was demoted to deputy director. Gordon and I had co-founded this company, and my parents, with their thirty years of industry experience, had left well-paying jobs to help us with their expertise. Last year, our company's revenue soared, surpassing a hundred million dollars. I couldn't understand why Gordon would make such decisions. When I confronted him, he brushed off my concerns, saying, “Kate, your parents were just run-of-the-mill technicians asking for sky-high salaries. Isn’t it sensible to let them go?” He added, “And you, the company gave you funds to hire a top spokesperson, and you couldn’t pull it off. What a waste! I think it’s time for Nala to step in as marketing director.” Everyone knew Nala Burns was his dream girl, like someone straight out of a romantic movie. My heart felt ice-cold; we had a fierce argument right there.

The champagne bubbles caught the light from the crystal chandeliers as Paxton's voice boomed across the opulent ballroom. "Ladies and gentlemen, tonight marks not just Burke Industries' triumphant IPO, but a celebration of true artistry!" I stood at the edge of the crowd, my fingers nervously smoothing the silk of my emerald dress—a dress Paxton had chosen, like everything else in my carefully curated life. The auction podium gleamed under the spotlights, and my heart hammered as I watched him stride toward it with the confidence of a man who owned the world. "We have here Sebastian Moreau's masterpiece, 'Dawn,'" the auctioneer announced, gesturing to the breathtaking canvas that seemed to glow with its own inner light. The painting depicted the first rays of sunrise breaking through storm clouds, each brushstroke alive with hope and renewal. "Bidding starts at two million." Paxton's hand shot up immediately. "Three million." Murmurs rippled through the crowd of Manhattan's elite. I recognized faces from magazine covers, art collectors whose names graced museum wings, socialites whose approval could make or break careers. They all watched with fascination as Paxton continued his relentless bidding. "Four million," came a counter-bid from somewhere behind me.
