Chapter 2

The photograph ran on Page Six the next morning. Me in my prison-issued clothes, champagne dripping down Beckham's perfect face, Stormi's mouth open in shock. The headline read: *Disgraced Ex-Fiancée Crashes Plaza Gala in Violent Outburst*.

I sat in the penthouse suite and studied it. Fifty-third floor. Floor-to-ceiling windows. Central Park spread out below like a green carpet. The suite was registered to a shell corporation I'd built from a prison library computer and three contraband phones. Nobody knew I owned it. Nobody knew I owned anything.

That was the point.

The article called me troubled. Unstable. A woman who couldn't accept that her fiancé had moved on. Beckham's quote was perfect: *I wish Laurel nothing but healing and peace. This must be very difficult for her.*

I set the paper down. Picked up my coffee. Took a sip.

Let them think I was broken. Let them think the champagne was all I had.

My phone buzzed. Delia's name appeared on the screen. I answered.

"Did you see it?" Her voice was dry. Amused.

"I'm reading it now."

"He's good. I'll give him that."

"He's a lawyer," I said. "Spin is the job."

"You want me to start?"

I looked out at the park. Runners on the paths. Dogs. People living their lives. "Yes. But slow. I want them hungry before we feed them."

"Understood." A pause. "Laurel?"

"What?"

"It's good to have you back."

I smiled. It felt strange on my face. Like a muscle I'd forgotten how to use. "It's good to be back."

I hung up and opened the dossier.

Three years of work. Assembled piece by piece through prison networks, smuggled communications, and favors traded in ways the outside world would never understand. The file was thick. Organized. Every document labeled and cross-referenced.

I flipped to the section marked *Evidence — Suppressed*.

The first page was a forensic report. Bloodwork from the night of the accident. Stormi's BAC had been point-one-two. Legally drunk. The report was dated two days after the incident and signed by the medical examiner. It had never appeared in court.

The second page was a witness statement. A bartender from the club where Stormi had been that night. He'd watched her do six shots in ninety minutes and tried to take her keys. She'd laughed and walked out anyway. The statement was notarized. Filed. Buried.

The third page was the confession itself. My signature at the bottom. But the handwriting above it—the careful legal phrasing, the precise construction of each sentence—wasn't mine.

It was Beckham's.

I'd suspected for two years. Now I knew.

He'd written the words. Handed me the pen. Told me it was the only way to protect Stormi. To protect the family. To keep everything from falling apart.

*Just a year,* he'd said. *I'll handle everything. Trust me.*

I trusted him.

I ran my finger over his handwriting. Neat. Controlled. Every letter exactly where it should be. The handwriting of a man who never made mistakes.

Except he'd made one.

He'd assumed I'd stay buried.

I closed the file. Locked it in the safe behind the Rothko print on the east wall. The combination was my prison ID number. I liked the symmetry.

Then I made a call.

Delia answered on the first ring. "I'm listening."

"Launch the platform. Offshore entity. Institutional backing. Make it look like old European money."

"Returns?"

"Fifteen percent quarterly. Spectacular but not stupid."

"Timeline?"

"Seed it through the charity circuit. The luncheons Stormi goes to. The socialite networks. I want her to hear about it from three different women before the week is out."

"She'll bite."

"She always does."

Delia's voice sharpened with focus. "What are we calling it?"

I looked out at the city. At the buildings and the people and the life I'd been locked away from. "The Ascension Fund."

"Subtle."

"She won't notice."

I hung up and poured another cup of coffee. Stood at the window. Watched the runners in the park.

Stormi would hear about the fund at a luncheon. Maybe two. She'd ask questions. Casual. Interested. Someone would mention the returns. Someone else would mention the exclusivity. Limited partners. Invitation only. The kind of opportunity people like Stormi spent their lives chasing.

She'd want in.

And when she wanted in, she'd bring Beckham. And Beckham would bring my father's money. And my father's money would bring everything else.

They'd walk into the trap because they couldn't imagine I'd built it.

I sipped my coffee. It was good. Expensive. The kind of thing I used to take for granted.

I didn't take anything for granted anymore.

My phone buzzed again. A news alert. Another article about the gala. This one had a quote from Stormi: *We're just so grateful everyone is safe. Laurel needs help, and we hope she finds it.*

I smiled.

Let her be grateful.

Grateful people made the worst decisions.

I set the phone down. Finished my coffee. Looked at my reflection in the window. The prosthetic eye caught the light. Perfect. Expensive. Indistinguishable unless you knew what to look for.

Most people didn't know what to look for.

That was their problem.

Not mine.
