Chapter 3

The luncheon was at Le Bernardin. White tablecloths. Crystal. Women in dresses that cost more than most people's rent. Stormi sat near the center, laughing at something a woman in pearls said. I watched from across the street through the window of a coffee shop I didn't drink from.

Delia's voice came through my earpiece. "Third mention. Veronica Ashford just brought it up."

I watched Stormi lean forward. Interested. Her hand went to her necklace—the tell she'd had since we were kids. She always touched her jewelry when she wanted something.

"She's hooked," I said.

"Give her a week. She'll make contact."

It took four days.

The inquiry came through one of the fund's placement agents. A woman named Stormi Murray wanted information about investment minimums and partnership terms. The agent—one of Delia's people—expressed polite regret. The fund was at capacity. Invitation only. Perhaps next quarter.

Stormi called back six hours later. Doubled her proposed investment. Said she had family capital available. Significant family capital.

The agent scheduled a meeting.

I watched it happen from the penthouse. Delia's team had cameras in the conference room. Stormi arrived in a cream suit with gold buttons. She'd done her hair. Brought a portfolio. She wanted to look serious. Capable. Like a woman who made her own financial decisions.

The presentation lasted forty minutes. Returns. Portfolio composition. Risk models. All of it real enough to pass any due diligence that wasn't looking for the trap underneath.

Stormi signed the paperwork that afternoon. Two million dollars. Her entire trust fund and the settlement from a grandmother who'd liked her better than me.

I waited.

Three weeks later, the first returns posted. Eighteen percent. Stormi's account balance bloomed. I imagined her checking it. Once. Twice. Showing Beckham the numbers over dinner.

Six weeks after that, another distribution. Twenty-two percent. Compounding.

That's when she made her mistake.

She told Clayton.

I was in the back of a car heading downtown when Delia called. "Your father just submitted an inquiry. Eight figures."

I smiled. "Let him wait."

"How long?"

"Three days. Then approve him."

Clayton Murray invested seventeen million dollars on a Tuesday morning. His personal accounts. The liquidity reserve from his business holdings. Money he'd spent thirty years accumulating. He did it because Stormi told him she'd discovered something. Because the returns were spectacular. Because men like Clayton believed they were too smart to be fooled.

Beckham came in two weeks later.

His inquiry was more cautious. Detailed questions. Requests for documentation. He had one of his junior associates vet the fund's legal structure. Everything checked out because I'd built it to check out.

He invested the law firm's partnership capital. Fourteen million dollars that belonged to twelve attorneys who'd trusted him with their money.

I watched the wire transfer clear and felt nothing.

No. That wasn't true.

I felt satisfied.

The fund's total assets under management now included the entire financial architecture of the Murray family and the operational capital of Beckham's firm. One keystroke and it would all vanish. But I didn't press it yet.

I wanted them comfortable first.

I started appearing.

Not obviously. Not in ways they could complain about. Just—present.

There was a legal conference at the Javits Center. Beckham was on a panel about appellate strategy. I sat in the back row wearing sunglasses and a black suit. He saw me during the Q&A. His answer faltered. Just for a second. Then he recovered.

Afterward, he made inquiries. Asked the event coordinator who I was. She checked the registration list and found a corporate sponsor. A shell company. No name.

Two weeks later, I had dinner at Gabriel Kreuther. Beckham was there with clients. I sat three tables away with two associates from Delia's firm. We talked about market trends and drank wine. I never looked at him. But I felt him looking at me.

He sent someone over. A junior partner. Friendly. Casual. Asked if I was enjoying my meal. Asked what brought me to the restaurant.

I smiled. "Business."

"What kind of business?"

"The kind I don't discuss at dinner."

The junior partner reported back. Beckham's face was unreadable. But his hand went to his cufflinks.

That weekend, there was a charity auction at Sotheby's. Estate jewelry. Beckham bid on a pair of emerald cufflinks. Eighteen-karat gold. He went to thirty thousand.

I bid thirty-five.

He turned in his seat. Looked for me. I was in the back. He couldn't see my face. Just my hand raising the paddle.

He bid forty.

I bid fifty.

He stopped. I won.

I never picked them up. Donated them back to the auction house the next day. I didn't want the cufflinks. I wanted him to know I could take them.

Delia called that night. "He's asking questions."

"What kind?"

"Discreet ones. Who you're working for. Where your money comes from. He's trying to figure out if you're a threat."

"What are people telling him?"

"Nothing. Every trail ends in shell companies and lawyers who smile and say they can't comment."

I looked out at the city. Lights everywhere. People in buildings living lives that didn't include me.

"Good," I said. "Let him wonder."

At the Murray house, they had a dinner. I knew because Melissa's assistant posted about it on Instagram. A family celebration. Stormi and Beckham at the head of the table. Clayton raising a glass.

The caption read: *Grateful for family, love, and new beginnings.*

There were twelve people in the photo. I wasn't one of them.

Clayton's toast made it into the society pages the next day. He'd called Beckham "the son I always wanted." Said the family was complete.

I read it twice. Then I opened my laptop and sent Delia a message.

*Accelerate the timeline. I want them bankrupt by the wedding.*

She replied in seconds. *Understood.*

I closed the laptop. Stood at the window. The city looked the same as it always did. Bright. Indifferent. Full of people who thought they were safe.

Beckham thought he was safe. Stormi thought she'd won. Clayton thought his family was complete.

They were all wrong.

I touched the prosthetic eye. Adjusted it. Felt the weight of it.

They'd taken three years. An eye. My name.

I was taking everything.
