Chapter 1

The gates opened at seven in the morning. I stood on the other side and breathed air that didn't taste like disinfectant and fear. Three years. One thousand and ninety-five days. I counted every single one.

The clothes they gave me back hung loose. I'd lost weight. Lost other things too. I touched the prosthetic eye out of habit, making sure it sat flush. The real one was gone—taken in my second year by a woman who decided I looked at her wrong. I didn't look at anyone after that. Just survived.

In my hand I held one photograph. Beckham. His face creased from being folded and unfolded too many times. I kept it face-down in my cell because looking hurt too much. But today was different. Today I could look. Today he'd be waiting like he promised.

I turned the photo over. His smile looked back at me. The same smile from the night he proposed. The same smile from the morning he brought me the confession to sign. *Just a year,* he'd said. *I'll be right here when you get out. We'll start over. I love you.*

I believed him. I had to. Without that promise, the three years would've killed me.

The car he'd arranged pulled up. Black sedan. Clean. I slid into the back seat and gave the driver the address. The Plaza Hotel. Beckham's last letter—two years ago now, but I'd memorized every word—said we'd celebrate my release there. He'd book the same suite where he proposed. We'd have champagne. We'd finally be together.

Manhattan looked different. Brighter. Louder. Or maybe I'd just forgotten what the world looked like when you weren't watching it through razor wire. The buildings blurred past. My chest felt tight. Excited. Nervous. I wanted to see his face when he saw me. I wanted him to hold me and tell me it was over. That the nightmare was done.

The Plaza rose up ahead, golden and massive. My pulse kicked. The car stopped. I got out.

Music poured from the entrance. Bright. Loud. A doorman in white gloves held the door. I walked through and froze.

The lobby was full of people in black tie. Champagne glasses. Laughter. An ice sculpture in the center caught the light—two letters carved in elegant script. **B & S**.

Not **B & L**.

**B & S**.

I stood there and tried to make sense of it. My brain felt slow. Stupid. Maybe I'd gotten the date wrong. Maybe this was someone else's party. Maybe—

Then I saw her.

Stormi. My sister. She stood near the sculpture in a white gown that looked like a wedding dress. Diamonds at her throat. Her hair pinned up in soft curls. And on her hand—her left hand, held up as she laughed with a woman I didn't recognize—was a ring.

My ring.

The one Beckham gave me on the terrace four years ago.

Next to her stood Beckham. Tall. Sharp. Perfect in his tuxedo. He held a champagne flute and smiled at something a man in a gray suit said. He looked happy. Relaxed. Like a man celebrating.

I couldn't breathe.

The photograph slipped from my hand and hit the floor.

Beckham's eyes flicked toward the sound. He saw me. For one second—maybe less—something crossed his face. Surprise. Then it smoothed out. Cold. Controlled. The lawyer's mask.

Stormi turned. Her mouth opened. Her face went white.

I started walking. My legs felt like they belonged to someone else. The crowd parted. People stared. I heard whispers. *Is that—? Oh my God, what happened to her eye?*

I stopped in front of Beckham. Up close he looked exactly the same. Not a single thing changed. While I'd lost an eye and twenty pounds and three years, he'd stayed perfect.

"You said you'd wait." My voice came out quiet. Steady. I was proud of that. "You promised."

Beckham set his glass down on a nearby table. He adjusted his cufflinks. That old habit. "Laurel." He said my name like it was a legal term he had to define. "You're a convicted felon with no claim on anything in this room."

Stormi stepped closer. She wore my ring. My fiancé. My life. She smiled—bright and cutting, the same smile she'd used since we were kids when she took something that was mine. "We kept your things in storage. That dress certainly needs replacing."

Behind them, I saw my parents. Clayton and Melissa Murray. My father stood with his arms crossed. My mother's hand rested on Stormi's shoulder. Protective. Proud.

My father cleared his throat. "You have to understand, Laurel. We had to move on."

My mother said nothing. She looked at the floor.

Something inside me—something that had been holding on for three years, bleeding and desperate—finally let go.

I reached past Beckham and took a champagne flute from a passing waiter's tray. The glass felt cold. Solid. Real.

I threw it in Beckham's face.

Champagne exploded across his perfect tuxedo. Golden liquid ran down his jaw, his collar, his lapels. The room went silent. Every conversation stopped. Beckham stood frozen, his composure cracking for the first time in his life.

I looked at the crowd. At the people who'd watched me walk in like a ghost. At my sister in white. At my parents who'd never visited. At the man who'd promised me forever and given me nothing.

"I gave you three years," I said. My voice carried. Clear. Final. "My eye. My name. You gave me nothing."

I turned to Beckham. He was wiping champagne from his face with a napkin someone handed him. His eyes met mine. Cold. Calculating. Already working on damage control.

"So I'll take everything."

I looked at my parents. At Clayton with his boardroom authority. At Melissa with her selective love.

"You are no longer my family."

I turned. Walked toward the door. Behind me the room erupted—whispers, gasps, the sharp click of heels as someone moved. I didn't look back. I kept walking. Through the lobby. Past the doorman. Into the Manhattan morning.

The hope I'd carried was gone. Burned away. And in its place was something new. Something cold and sharp and absolutely clear.

I was done being the daughter they didn't choose. The fiancée no one waited for.

Now I'd be the reckoning they never saw coming.
