Chapter 2

At ten the next morning, I sat at my desk in Padelford Hall. Outside, the Seattle fog pressed against the glass.

I picked up my phone and dialed Cassian’s campus extension.

He answered on the second ring. "Barnes here." His voice was warm and brisk, the tone he used for colleagues and favorite students.

"Hey," I said. My voice was completely steady. "Do you have a minute?"

"Of course, Vi. Is everything okay?"

"Fine," I said. "I'm looking at flights for the Chicago symposium next month. I logged into our joint account to transfer the deposit, but the balance looked strange. Did something happen with the funds?"

There was a half-second of dead silence on the line. Then he let out a soft, rehearsed chuckle.

"Oh. That," he said. He sounded completely relaxed. "I meant to tell you yesterday. I moved the liquid cash into a high-yield portfolio with our advisor. The market is shifting, and leaving that much money in a basic checking account is wasteful."

"A high-yield portfolio," I repeated flatly.

"Exactly. The transfer takes a few business days to clear the clearinghouse. It’s just administrative lag." He paused, his tone shifting into something softer, like a doctor soothing a nervous patient. "Honestly, Violet, if you trusted me, you wouldn't need to micromanage our finances like this. Marriage is about faith, not constant audits."

A sharp chill ran down my spine, but it didn't hurt. It just cleared away the last piece of warmth I had for him.

"Right," I said. "Good to know. Thanks, Cass."

"See you at home, love," he said, and hung up.

I set the phone down. Something inside my chest hardened into diamond.

For the next four days, I went to work as if nothing was wrong. I taught my morning lectures on American literature. I held office hours. I attended a curriculum committee meeting on Wednesday afternoon and sat across the table from Cassian.

He offered me a polite, affectionate smile from across the mahogany table. I met his eyes and nodded once. Nobody in the room noticed a thing. To our department, we were still the golden couple, weathering a brief patch of pre-wedding stress.

Every evening, after Cassian went to sleep or stayed late at the faculty lounge, I sat at my desk with the lights off. The glow of my laptop illuminated my hands.

I opened the encrypted folder named *Barnes*.

I built a spreadsheet. Column A was the date. Column B was the transaction from our joint bank statements. Column C was Brittany Owens’s public Instagram posts.

The pieces fell together with sickening ease.

On October 12, a wire transfer of two hundred and forty thousand dollars left our account, routed to an escrow company in Bellevue.

On October 14, Brittany posted a photo holding two sets of brass keys: *New beginnings in Ballard. No mortgage, no landlord, just me and my future.*

On October 16, the King County records office officially recorded the deed in Brittany Owens’s name.

Four days.

Four days between draining our joint account and handing her the title.

He hadn't made a mistake. He hadn't been careless. He had planned it with surgical precision while sleeping beside me every single night.

On Friday evening, I heard his key turn in the front door.

I shut my laptop and walked into the kitchen. Cassian stepped into the hallway carrying two brown paper bags. The scent of roasted garlic and basil filled the air.

"I picked up Wild Ginger," he said, smiling brightly. He set the bags on the counter. "Your favorite. Pad Thai and the green curry."

He pulled a bottle of Pinot Noir from his coat pocket and set it beside the takeout. It was a good vintage, fifty dollars a bottle.

"You didn't have to do that," I said quietly.

"I wanted to." He walked over, reached out, and caught my hands. His skin was warm. I could feel the platinum ring on his finger pressing against my knuckle. "Look, Vi. I hated how things were left between us this week. I was stressed about the tenure review and the department budget, and I snapped at you about the house deed. That wasn't fair."

I looked at him. His eyes were wide, clear, and utterly convincing. It was his best performance.

"I shouldn't have been so defensive," he continued, giving my hands a gentle squeeze. "We’re a team. Once this academic term wraps up, we’ll sit down with the lawyer and put your name on the deed. I promise. Can we just put this week behind us?"

He genuinely thought this was about the deed. He had no idea the ground beneath him had already dissolved.

"Okay," I said softly.

His shoulders dropped in visible relief. A smug, satisfied light flickered in his eyes. He thought he had handled me. He thought women were simple creatures who just needed an expensive dinner and an empty apology.

"Good," he said, turning to fetch two plates from the cupboard. "Let me uncork the wine."

I sat down at the dining table. I ate the noodles. I took a sip of the red wine. It tasted like vinegar in my mouth, but I swallowed it anyway.

Cassian talked about his students and his upcoming grant proposal. I nodded at the right moments. I offered small, one-word replies.

He smiled across the table, completely content, mistaking my silence for peace.
