Chapter 3

On Saturday afternoon, the Seattle drizzle finally stopped.

I walked down the front steps of our building to check the mail. The air smelled of wet cedar and exhaust. A neighbor, Mrs. Gable, was walking her golden retriever down the sidewalk. Two graduate students from the third floor were chatting by the gate.

Then a silver sedan pulled up to the curb.

A young woman stepped out. She wore an oversized cream sweater, black leggings, and heavy makeup that looked freshly ruined. I recognized her immediately. It was Brittany Owens.

She didn't hesitate. She locked eyes with me and marched up the walkway.

Before I could speak, she dropped to her knees on the damp concrete.

"Please!" she cried. Her voice was sharp and loud, pitched to carry across the entire courtyard.

Mrs. Gable stopped. Her dog whimpered. Up on the second-floor balcony, a window slid open.

Brittany looked up at me, tears streaming down her cheeks. She clasped her hands together in front of her chest like a tragic heroine in a cheap play.

"He loves me, Violet," she sobbed. "He told me himself! He's only staying with you because he feels sorry for you. He can’t bear to hurt you, but he’s dying inside. Please, just let him be happy. Let him go!"

I stood on the bottom step and looked down at her. I didn't blink. I didn't move an inch.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw one of the graduate students pull out a phone, angling the camera toward us. Brittany must have seen it too, because her sobs grew louder. She bent forward until her forehead almost touched my boots.

It was a good performance. It made her look tiny, desperate, and hopelessly in love. It made me look like a cold, heartless warden holding a good man hostage.

Then came the sound of tires screeching against the curb.

Cassian’s Audi slammed into park behind Brittany’s car. He had arrived in less than three minutes. It was impossible timing. He hadn't just stumbled upon us—he had followed her, or she had texted him before she got out of the car.

He threw open his door and ran across the lawn. His coat was half-unbuttoned, his wire-rimmed glasses slightly crooked.

He didn't look at me. Not once.

He dropped to one knee beside Brittany, wrapping both arms around her shoulders. "Brittany, stop. Get up. Come on, look at me."

She buried her face in his neck, wailing softly. He pulled her gently to her feet, shielding her body with his own.

Then he turned to me.

His face was flushed red. His jaw was set in that familiar, righteous line he used whenever he spoke about ethics to first-year students.

"Violet, show some compassion," he snapped. His voice was thick with disgust. "Can't you see she's completely hysterical? What kind of person stands there like a stone while someone is suffering?"

He didn't ask me what happened. He didn't ask if I was okay. He didn't even look guilty.

To Cassian, I wasn't his partner of eight years. I wasn't the woman who had edited his dissertation, paid half his mortgage, and planned his wedding. I was just an obstacle standing between him and his clean exit.

The neighbors were dead silent now. Three phones were pointing right at us.

Cassian thought he had control of the narrative. He thought public shame would make me crumble and retreat inside so he could handle this behind closed doors.

He forgot what I do for a living. I break down arguments for a room full of critics.

I reached into my coat pocket. My hands were perfectly warm and steady. I pulled out my phone, unlocked it, and opened the folder named *Barnes*.

I didn't yell. I used my lecture hall voice—clear, quiet, and impossible to ignore.

"October fourteenth," I said, holding the screen out so the nearest camera could catch it. "Brittany posted this photo of a two-bedroom condo in Ballard. Caption: *Paid in cash so nobody could ever take it from me.*"

Cassian froze. The righteous anger on his face flickered.

I swiped to the next image.

"October sixteenth. The King County deed records. The condo was purchased outright. Sole owner: Brittany Owens."

Brittany stopped crying. She pulled back from Cassian's chest, her eyes darting between me and the screen.

"And here," I continued, swiping one more time, "is our joint savings account statement from October twelfth. A wire transfer of two hundred and forty thousand dollars. Exactly half of that money was my tenure-track salary, deposited over five years."

I looked directly at Cassian. The color had completely drained from his face. His mouth opened, but nothing came out. His fingers twitched against Brittany's arm.

"You didn't buy her a home with your grand academic success, Cassian," I said evenly. "You bought it with my labor."

Mrs. Gable let out a sharp gasp. A phone camera shifted closer.

Cassian swallowed hard. "Violet... wait. Let's go inside. We can talk about this—"

"The wedding is off," I said. Every word fell like a heavy stone. "You will liquidate that condo and return every single cent of my savings by Monday morning."

"Vi, please—" He took half a step toward me, letting go of Brittany.

I didn't flinch. I looked straight into his eyes.

"If you contact me again without a lawyer present," I said quietly, "every colleague in our department, every committee chair, and every student who ever admired you will see these exact files. Do not test me."

Cassian stood paralyzed on the sidewalk. Brittany looked down at the concrete, suddenly realizing the spotlight was no longer flattering.

I turned around, walked up the steps, and let the heavy glass door click shut behind me.
