Chapter 3

Elara POV:

The drive back from the temple was a silent, suffocating passage through hell. Kael did not utter a single word, his knuckles stark white against the dark leather of the steering wheel, the air thick with the residue of his unspoken fury.

I retreated to my room, the crushing finality of his rejection settling over me like a funeral shroud. I skipped dinner, ignoring the faint calls from downstairs. Hours bled into one another until the house fell silent.

It was then, as the old grandfather clock in the hallway struck two in the morning, that the agitation in my soul refused to let me rest. My throat was burning, completely dry from the silent tears I had shed for hours. I quietly opened my bedroom door and walked down the dark, carpeted hallway toward the stairs.

As I passed Kael's bedroom, my sharp werewolf hearing caught a sound that sent a cold stillness through my veins. It was the heavy, rhythmic creaking of a bedframe, followed by a low, rough groan.

"Kael," Selene's voice drifted through the thick oak door, breathless and sweet.

A wave of bile rose in my throat, so acidic I had to press a hand to my mouth and lean against the wall. I could smell the cloying, mingled scents of their arousal leaking from beneath the door.

"We need to figure out what to do with Elara," Selene whispered, her voice laced with poison. "She's a distraction. Let me introduce her to one of your low-ranking friends."

I held my breath, waiting for Kael to defend me, to tell her I was not some object to be given away.

"Whatever," Kael replied, his voice completely indifferent, followed by the sound of him kissing her neck.

My inner wolf did not whimper; she simply ceased to be, retreating into the darkest, coldest corner of my mind.

I did not go to the kitchen. I turned around, ran back to my room, and grabbed my car keys with shaking hands. I dialed Silas's number as I ran out into the pouring rain.

"Hyatt Hotel, room 1805," Silas answered, his voice thick with sleep.

I threw my phone onto the passenger seat and pressed the gas pedal all the way down. The tires shrieked against the wet asphalt, a sound that mirrored the one trapped in my own throat, as I sped through the dark city streets. Rain lashed against the windshield, but it could not wash away the filthy sound of Kael's voice in my head.

I reached the hotel, ran through the empty lobby, and hammered my fists against the door of room 1805.

The door swung open, revealing Silas standing there in a loose white robe. His amber eyes widened slightly at the sight of my soaking wet clothes and shivering body.

I did not give him a chance to speak. I stepped forward, grabbed the lapels of his robe, stood on my toes, and crashed my lips against his.

The moment our skin touched, it was not a spark but an ignition—a deep, visceral current that shot through my nerves, arcing from the point of contact to the base of my spine. Silas gasped against my mouth, his large hands instantly dropping to my waist to pull me flush against his hard chest.

His scent, a dangerous mix of dark rum and burning cedar, flooded my senses and completely erased the smell of the rain. A profound, radiating heat ignited in my lower stomach, a biological fire that had nothing to do with simple lust. It was a fever, a burning in my blood that made my skin flush and my heart pound against my ribs.

Silas kicked the door shut behind us, trapping us in the dim light of the room. He lifted me off the ground effortlessly, his Alpha strength completely overwhelming my Omega frailty. He carried me to the massive bed by the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city lights reflecting off the wet glass.

There were no words, only the desperate, frantic tearing of clothes and the collision of our burning skin. It was not about tenderness; it was a frantic, almost brutal act of erasure, his touch scouring away the lingering ghost of another's claim.

When he finally pushed inside me, the pain was instantly swallowed by a blinding, white-hot pleasure. My inner wolf purred, the deep emptiness in my chest suddenly filled with his dominating presence. We tangled together all night, letting the rain and the darkness hide our broken pieces.

But as I lay in his arms afterward, staring at the ceiling, a treacherous thought whispered through my mind: This was supposed to be revenge. So why does it feel like the first real thing I've done in a year?

The next morning, I sat on the cold balcony in one of Silas's oversized shirts. I lit a cigarette, watching the gray clouds hang low over the city skyline. My mind buzzed with a dozen missed Mind-Links from Kael, but I kept my mental walls completely sealed.

Silas walked out onto the balcony, taking the cigarette from my fingers and taking a long drag.

"We're quite a pair, little wolf," Silas chuckled lazily, blowing a ring of smoke into the damp air. "Two strays, finding a bit of warmth in the same gutter."

I looked up at him, noting the faint purple bruises I had left on his collarbone.

"I'm not a backup anymore," I said quietly, the smoke burning my lungs.

Silas smiled, a genuine, predator's smile that made his amber eyes glow.

"Good," Silas said, leaning down to kiss the top of my head. "Because the Priestess temple opens in exactly twenty minutes."

The ancient stone walls of the Moon Priestess temple were cold and silent. Silas and I stood before the silver altar, holding hands as the old Priestess chanted the sacred verses. She dragged a silver blade across our palms, pressing our bleeding hands together to mix our blood. It was the first step of the Marking, a binding blood pact that tied our souls together in the eyes of the Moon Goddess.

The ritual took exactly ten minutes, but when I walked out of the temple, I felt like a completely different person. Silas kissed my cheek, promising to meet me later, and I drove back to the Silver Moon Pack territory.

The moment I stepped through the heavy oak doors of the manor, the air felt thick and suffocating. Kael was standing at the bottom of the grand staircase, his face pale and his eyes dark like storm clouds.

"Where were you all night?" Kael demanded, his voice vibrating with the terrifying weight of the Alpha's Command.

I forced my knees to stay locked, refusing to bow to his aura. Before I could answer, I noticed a stranger sitting nervously on the living room sofa. He was a low-ranking wolf, dressed in a cheap suit, but his facial features and broad shoulders looked exactly like Kael's.

"Who is this?" I asked, pointing at the man.

Selene walked out of the kitchen, sipping a cup of herbal tea with a smug smile.

"This is Lucian," Selene announced proudly. "The former Luna thought it was time you settled down, so she arranged a meeting. Kael is just here to oversee the Pack's generous arrangement."

I stared at the man, the realization hitting me like a physical blow to the stomach. They found a cheap, low-ranking copy of Kael to be my mate.

I let out a dry, bitter laugh that echoed loudly in the quiet foyer.

"You are so obedient, brother," I mocked, looking directly into Kael's rigid, trapped eyes. "Letting your mother find me a cheap body double."

Kael stepped closer, his nostrils flaring as he took in a deep breath. His head snapped back as if struck. The air he drew in seemed to poison him on the spot. His gray eyes flashed bright gold, and a low, dangerous growl ripped from his throat.

He smelled Silas on me. He smelled the dark rum and cedar of another Alpha soaked into my skin.

I reached up and slowly pulled the collar of my jacket aside. Right on the sensitive skin of my neck, sitting perfectly over my scent gland, was a dark, purple hickey.

A tremor ran through Kael's frame, so violent I could hear the grinding of cartilage as his skeleton fought to rearrange itself. He was on the verge of the Shift, his inner beast desperately trying to claw its way out to kill the rival male.

"Who did this?" Kael roared, the sound shaking the glass windows of the manor.

"Kael, stop it!" Selene shrieked, rushing forward to grab his arm. "We're going to be late for the Chen family wedding!"

Kael stared at my neck, his chest heaving as he fought a brutal war against his own biology. He closed his eyes, forcing his bones back into place, choosing his duty over his wolf once again.

I watched him force the beast down, and in that moment, I understood something with perfect, painful clarity: Kael would always choose duty over love. It was not a choice he made once. It was who he was.

And that knowledge set something free inside me.
