Chapter 1

My husband, Jared Smith, let me take his spot for a highland vacation.

After I departed, I found out that I won a random lottery that I had bought before for $50 million.

In order to not delay the redemption of the lottery ticket, I took a red-eye flight back home and wanted to share the news with Jared.

Before I went into the house, I heard his smug laugh.

“That jacket belongs to Sammy, I’m sure! That dumb witch has been eaten by a bear! I’m so glad that Penny and I sent her on that trip.”

It just so happened that the tour group chat sent a video of a member being eaten by a brown bear. My jacket was bloody.

However, I was not the one who had been wearing that jacket.

It had been his lover, Penny Lee.

In the video, Penny Lee was disfigured from the bear attack.

I did not dare to think about how sad Jared Smith would be when he found out that it was Penny who had died and not me.

After all, she was his childhood lover that he had sworn to protect forever.

Even if Penny got a mild cold, he would immediately take time off to take care of her.

However, he thought I was the one who died based on the jacket. So, he was not anxious.

He was even laughing smugly that I was an idiot.

I felt that my feelings were wasted on him. I almost thought about going in and asking for an explanation.

The next second, I heard my mother-in-law, Mary Smith, say, “It’s good that she’s dead. Her money will be ours!”

Jared agreed.

“Penny didn’t like her. It’s good that she died. Now you can marry Penny.”

It turned out that Mary had wanted me dead for a long time and intended to use my money to get a new daughter-in-law.

I treated them like my own family, but they wanted to hurt me.

I patted the lottery ticket in my bag. I was relieved that I had not told them I had won the lottery.

Otherwise, they would have tortured me in more gruesome ways!

I suppressed my anger and continued to eavesdrop at the door.

Since I had found this out, I would not let them off the hook easily!

“Mom, the tour guide isn’t sure if she’s truly dead,” Jared said. “Let me call Penny to confirm.”

Then, the phone in my pocket started to ring.

The ringtone was extremely loud in the quiet hallway.

I immediately hung up and ran downstairs to find a place to hide.

Because I was too excited from winning the lottery, I accidentally wore the wrong jacket when I left in a rush last night.

I had worn Penny’s jacket.

Her phone was still in her pocket.

I realized that only after I got onto the flight.

She had worn my jacket because she had no other choice.

After I ended the call, Jared immediately texted Penny instead.

If I did not answer, he would definitely be suspicious.

Penny had set a lockscreen password.

Her wallpaper was a photo of her and Jared hugging under the moonlight.

I looked at the photo and entered Jared’s birthday without thinking.

It was the correct password!

I unlocked Penny’s phone.

I clicked on her conversation with Jared. It was filled with sweet words and inappropriate videos.

In the past, I knew Jared doted on her.

But I trusted him as my husband, so I had not pried into their relationship even if it made me uncomfortable at times.

He took my trust for granted and had started having an affair with Penny.

He even called her his “wifey” in public.

[Baby, are you scared?]

Jared texted Penny.

[Call me so that I know you’re okay.]

[The signal is very poor here.] I immediately texted him. [I’ll text instead. I’m fine, don’t worry.]

Highland usually had bad signals.

Jared was not suspicious of that.

[That’s good, I don’t want you to struggle.

[Oh, by the way, don’t you want to know how I set Sammy up?

[I secretly hid a packet in her jacket to attract the brown bear’s attention. Then, I created a map for the tour to ensure that she would run into a bear.]

Jared started to explain.

He actually hatched a plan to murder me!

He had planned to kill me so that he could be with Penny.

I was disgusted with him.

If I had not won the lottery, I would have been the bear’s food instead.

To not raise suspicion, I pretended to reply coyly like Penny usually did.

[The tour guide called me.]

Jared sent a voice note.

“I didn’t expect Sammy to be still alive, but the tour group has flown her back for treatment. I have to go there personally. Don’t be jealous, okay?”

I did not expect Penny to have survived the horrific bear attack.

I was afraid that Jared would harm me again.

So, I secretly followed him to the hospital.
