Chapter 2

Penny was bandaged from head to toe as she was sent to the ICU.

Her face was completely ripped off, and bones were exposed in several areas.

I deliberately changed into loose clothing and put on a mask and hat.

I hid in a secluded corner.

I could see the ward from here, and Jared could not see me from that angle.

“The patient’s condition is complicated.”

The doctor said to him, “The treatment will cost at least a few million dollars, and that’s excluding the costs for plastic surgery and skin grafts after.”

Jared frowned and looked annoyed.

“A few million dollars? She isn’t worth that much money!”

Of course, he did not want to save me.

Even though I had mentally prepared myself, I was still upset when I heard his blatant indifference.

He had nothing when we first got together. I was the one who helped him set up his business, which was why his career took off.

We were not very rich, but he could totally afford a few million dollars.

He just did not want to spend it on me. All he could think of was a happy ending with Penny.

The doctor did not expect Jared to reject it outright.

“Don’t you want to consider it? According to the medical report, she’s two months pregnant.”

“What?!”

Jared looked a little torn.

We did not have children despite being married for many years.

The examination results showed that he had a low sperm count.

It was not easy for us to have a baby.

However, I had not expected Penny to be pregnant.

Two months ago, I went back to my hometown for my grandmother’s funeral.

He said he had work to do, so he did not come with me.

Because of him, my entire family said that I was ruthless.

It seemed he had not been busy with work.

Instead, he was sleeping with Penny.

“Then… you should save her…” Jared hesitated.

I was disgusted by the two of them.

Since he wanted a child, I would not let him have his way.

I immediately flipped through Penny’s phone.

I found a photo of her pregnancy test report.

I sent it over to Jared.

[Jared, here’s a surprise for you!]

Jared received the photo, and his expression immediately changed when he read the report. He was shocked and excited.

[Baby, you’re pregnant?]

[I wanted to tell you after making sure first. You’re not mad at me, are you?]

I pretended to be coy. [Since you’re going to marry me, I want my baby to have a complete family.]

[Don’t worry, you’ll be my only wife!]

Jared was extremely happy.

He kept sending sweet texts to Penny.

He had never said these things to me ever.

After he confirmed Penny’s pregnancy report, he said to the doctor, “Abort that child. I don’t need it.”

“Mr. Smith, do you want to at least reconsider?” The doctor’s face was stern.

“Abort it!”

Jared glared at the doctor and gritted his teeth. “I have low sperm count, and she’s pregnant! It must be some other man’s child! Why’d I save this woman?”

His words pierced through my heart.

All these years, I was afraid that he would be insecure about why we could not have children. So, I told everyone that the problem was with me.

Aside from being looked down on by others, I suffered a lot from IVFs.

Initially, I thought that he would appreciate my effort.

Instead, he had given me a big reality check.

After the doctor left, Jared also wanted to leave.

Penny suddenly woke up.

Her pained moans could be heard outside the ward.

My heart dropped.

I was afraid that he would recognize her voice.

Jared turned around and walked into the ward suspiciously.

When Penny saw him, she made even more noises.

She was trying very hard to grab Jared’s hand.

My heart was thumping against my chest.

If Jared recognized that this was Penny who was lying on the hospital bed, he would exhaust his resources to save her, and he would blame it all on me.

I would meet my end!

“Sammy?” Jared extended his hand toward Penny’s face.
