Chapter 2

The security footage went viral within forty-eight hours. Not viral in the way cat videos or celebrity scandals spread—this was the particular, vicious velocity of elite academic circles tearing apart one of their own. By Monday morning, my inbox held seventeen interview requests, six formal apologies from colleagues who had believed the plagiarism story five years ago, and one email from Dean Cho with the subject line: "Restoration of Academic Record - Urgent."

I sat at the kitchen island with my coffee, watching the steam rise in delicate spirals. The house was quiet. Evander had taken the twins to their music lesson. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, turning everything soft and golden. It should have felt like victory.

My thumb found the inside of my wedding band and pressed.

"You're doing it again," Evander's voice came from the doorway. I hadn't heard him return. He moved into the kitchen with that particular economy of motion he had—nothing wasted, nothing uncertain. He set a bakery box on the counter. "Maximus insisted on the chocolate croissants. Emersyn vetted the pastry selection like she was negotiating a treaty."

I smiled despite myself. "Where are they?"

"Biscuit needed a walk. They're in the garden." He poured himself coffee and sat across from me, his eyes steady on my face. "Tell me about the gala."

I had given him the outline Saturday night—the photos, the footage, the helicopter exit. But Evander didn't ask questions to gather information. He asked because he knew I needed to say things out loud to understand them myself.

"Stella looked exactly the same," I said. "Same smile. Same voice. Like the last five years didn't happen. Like she didn't—" I stopped. Took a breath. "Darren kept staring at my hand. I think he saw the ring."

Evander's expression didn't change, but something shifted in the air between us. "Good," he said quietly.

"Good?"

"Let him see it." He reached across the island and covered my hand with his, stilling the anxious pressure of my thumb. "Let him understand exactly how far out of reach you are."

I looked down at our joined hands. His fingers were warm, solid. Real. "He's not going to let this go."

"I know." Evander's thumb traced a slow circle against my wrist. "Victor doubled the security detail this morning. The twins' school has updated protocols. No one gets near them without clearance."

I should have been surprised. I wasn't. This was how Evander loved—three moves ahead, building walls before the threat arrived. "You think he'll escalate."

"I think a man who orchestrated your public humiliation five years ago and just watched it backfire in front of a thousand witnesses is not going to accept defeat gracefully." He paused. "But he's going to have to go through me to get to you. And that's not a fight he can win."

The words should have sounded arrogant. From anyone else, they would have been. From Evander, they were simply a statement of fact.

Footsteps thundered up the hallway. Maximus burst into the kitchen, his small face grave with purpose. "Mom. I need to show you something important."

He climbed onto the stool next to me and opened his evidence book—a small notebook with a superhero on the cover. Inside, crayon drawings covered every page. Stick figures with labels. "Suspicious Adults," the title page declared in his careful printing.

He flipped to a recent entry. The drawing showed a tall man with dark hair and an angry face. "This is the man from the photos," Maximus explained. "I gave him a rating. Two out of ten. And that's me being generous, Mom, because I'm trying to be fair."

I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from smiling. "That's very thorough research, sweetheart."

"I'm keeping track," he said seriously. "In case we need evidence later."

Emersyn appeared in the doorway, dragging her small backpack. She set it carefully by the kitchen entrance, then climbed into Evander's lap without a word.

"Em, what's in the bag?" I asked.

She looked at me with those wide, solemn eyes. "My bear. My toothbrush. Your picture." She paused. "In case we need to go somewhere safe."

The air left my lungs.

Evander's arms tightened around her. His gaze met mine over her head, and I saw something I rarely saw in him—a flash of pure, cold fury. Not at our daughter. At the man who had made her feel unsafe.

"We're not going anywhere," I said, my voice steady even as my heart cracked. "This is our home. No one is taking that away."

Emersyn nodded against Evander's chest. Maximus closed his evidence book with a decisive snap.

Later, after the twins were in bed, I found Evander in his study. He was on the phone, his voice low and clipped. "I want eyes on him twenty-four seven. If he so much as drives past the school, I want to know about it."

He hung up and looked at me.

"Victor?" I asked.

"Victor," he confirmed.

I crossed the room and wrapped my arms around him from behind, pressing my forehead against his shoulder. "Thank you," I whispered.

His hand covered mine. "You don't have to thank me for protecting what's mine."

Outside, the city glittered in the darkness. Somewhere out there, Darren was watching. Planning. Unraveling.

But inside these walls, I was safe. We all were.

And this time, I wasn't facing the storm alone.
