Chapter 3

The education center smelled like money and ambition. Fresh flowers in crystal vases. Marble floors polished to a mirror shine. I'd come to drop off paperwork for the twins' summer program—a formality, really, since Evander sat on the board. But I liked doing these things myself. Small, normal things that reminded me I was building a life, not just surviving one.

I was halfway across the lobby when I felt it. That particular quality of attention that meant trouble had found me.

"Opal."

Darren's voice carried across the space like a stone thrown through glass. I stopped. Turned slowly.

He stood near the entrance with Stella, both of them dressed like they were auditioning for a role they'd already been fired from. Designer clothes that screamed rather than whispered. Stella's smile was bright and brittle.

"We need to talk," Darren said. He moved closer, and I noticed the double-blink starting already. "About the gala. About what you did."

I adjusted my bag on my shoulder. "I didn't do anything. Stella did. The footage was quite clear."

"You staged it," Stella cut in, her voice rising. "You paid someone to edit that video. To make me look—"

"Like someone who sabotages AV equipment?" I kept my tone level. "The hotel has the original files. Time-stamped. Unedited. If you'd like to pursue legal action claiming forgery, I'm sure my attorneys would be happy to facilitate that conversation."

Darren's jaw tightened. "Who's backing you? You couldn't afford lawyers like that five years ago. Who are you sleeping with now?"

The question landed exactly as he intended—crude, designed to humiliate. Several people in the lobby had stopped to watch. I felt their attention like heat on my skin.

I looked at him for a long moment. "I'm leaving now."

I turned toward the exit.

"Don't you walk away from me—"

The crash cut him off mid-sentence.

I spun around. Stella was on the floor, both hands clutching her stomach, her face twisted in theatrical agony. "She pushed me!" Her voice was a shriek that echoed off the marble. "Oh God, the baby—someone call 911—she pushed me!"

Security materialized from three directions. The center's director rushed from her office. A small crowd formed instantly, phones already out.

Darren dropped to his knees beside Stella, his performance flawless. "I saw it," he said loudly, looking up at the gathering staff. "She shoved her. Stella's pregnant—she's been so careful—"

Stella was sobbing now, rocking slightly. "The baby," she gasped. "Please, someone help—"

I stood perfectly still. My hands hung loose at my sides. I said nothing.

The director approached me, her expression caught between professional concern and visible doubt. "Ms. Morrison, I need to ask you to wait here until—"

"Of course," I said quietly.

The ambulance arrived in seven minutes. Stella was loaded onto a stretcher, still crying, still clutching her stomach. Darren climbed in beside her, but not before shooting me a look of pure, poisonous triumph.

I waited.

Two hours later, I sat in a sterile hallway outside the ER, Victor Hale on one side and a NYPD detective on the other. Through the glass partition, I could see Stella on an examination table, the doctor's face growing progressively colder as he reviewed her paperwork.

The doctor emerged. Spoke quietly to the detective. The detective's expression shifted from neutral to annoyed.

He walked to where Darren sat in the waiting area. "Mr. Payne, I need you to come with me."

Darren stood. "Is she okay? Is the baby—"

"There is no baby," the detective said flatly. "The pregnancy documents she provided are forged. The attending physician confirms she shows no signs of current or recent pregnancy."

The color drained from Darren's face.

"Both of you are being charged with filing a false police report. You have the right to remain silent—"

Stella's voice rose from inside the examination room, shrill with panic. "Darren, do something—tell them—"

Darren turned toward me. Our eyes met across the hallway. His gaze dropped to my left hand, where my wedding band caught the fluorescent light.

Blink. Blink.

The double-tell, faster than I'd ever seen it. His face went through a dozen expressions in three seconds—confusion, realization, fury, something that looked almost like grief.

He opened his mouth. Closed it. Opened it again.

"You remarried," he said. Not a question. An accusation.

I stood. Victor rose with me, a wall of expensive suit and quiet menace.

"Detective," I said to the officer, "I'll be available if you need a formal statement. My attorney has my contact information."

I walked past Darren without another word. Victor followed.

Behind us, Stella's voice cracked into sobs. Darren said nothing at all.

In the car, my phone buzzed. Evander: *Victor briefed me. Are you okay?*

I looked at the message for a long moment. My thumb found the inside of my wedding band and pressed.

*I'm fine,* I typed back. *Coming home.*

The response was immediate: *We're waiting.*

I leaned my head against the window and watched Manhattan slide past. Somewhere behind us, Darren was being processed. Learning exactly how far he'd fallen.

And somewhere ahead, my family was waiting.

I closed my eyes and let myself believe, just for a moment, that the worst was over.

I was wrong.
