Chapter 2

After the banquet, I returned to Oregon and my quiet life designing seaside cottages.

I thought things would return to their peaceful rhythm.

Until a week later, when my father suffered a massive heart attack and was rushed to the hospital.

The doctor delivered the diagnosis: he needed an immediate transfer to the Mayo Clinic for surgery. The cost would be at least five hundred thousand dollars.

I checked all my accounts, scraped together every penny I had, and came up with less than fifty thousand.

My desperation had driven me to consider selling my seaside cottage when a call came from an unknown number.

"Hello, is this Chloe?"

It was Caleb.

I clutched the phone, my voice turning to ice.

"How did you get my number?"

"That's not important right now."

His voice, assertive and powerful, filled the line.

"I heard about your father."

"I've already contacted the best cardiac surgeon at the Mayo Clinic."

"A private jet will be at your local airport in two hours."

My mind went blank.

"You've been investigating me?"

"I've been worried about you."

He paused, his tone softening almost imperceptibly.

"Chloe, don't be stubborn. Your father's life is what's important."

My father was my only weakness.

I couldn't refuse.

Two hours later, my father was on his way.

The director of the local hospital called me personally, his attitude fawning.

"Miss Chloe, all of your father's medical expenses,"

"Mr. Caleb has already paid them in full."

"Rest assured, he will receive the absolute best care."

I sat in the empty cottage, the walls closing in, feeling suffocated and cornered.

He was using my father's life to drag me back into his orbit.

Late that night, a message lit up my phone from another unknown number.

I opened it. It was Sierra.

"Chloe, are you asleep?"

I didn't respond.

She quickly sent a second message, a voice note, her tone a cloying mix of gloating and pity.

"Caleb has been so busy with your father's situation, he even canceled our family dinner."

"He says he owes you, that he feels like he can never truly repay you."

"Chloe, Caleb has done so much for you."

"If I were you, I'd be smart and take this opportunity. Just let him give you a little something to make things right."

"Otherwise, he won't be able to live with himself, and the guilt will affect our relationship."

I was about to block her when another text appeared.

"Oh, by the way, Chloe, Caleb asked me to tell you."

"He said you should rest easy, and he'll take care of everything."

"Take care of what?"

I typed back, my words cold.

Her cheerful voice note arrived instantly.

"Your business, of course."

"He said he can't let you carry that stigma for the rest of your life."

"He's going to find a way to help you clear your name."

She enunciated the words "clear your name" with heavy, deliberate emphasis.

The blood in my veins turned to ice.

What did she mean, help me clear my name?

He was the sole architect of my ruin.

How did he plan to "clear" it?

Find a scapegoat, then have me thank him for his mercy?

With a ding, a picture message arrived.

It was a photo of Sierra and Caleb.

In the picture, Caleb was in a bathrobe on the deck of a yacht, reading a file. Sierra hugged him from behind, smiling sweetly for the camera.

The caption read, *You have to look forward, Chloe.*

Nausea clawed at my throat. I bolted to the bathroom, retching until the world spun.

Ten years.

They had destroyed my life, and now they wanted to swoop in as saviors to buy their own peace of mind.

By what right?
