Chapter 3

A week later, my father's surgery was a great success.

Caleb came to the hospital in person.

He had lost some weight, and there were faint shadows under his eyes, as if caring for my father had taken a significant toll on him.

He brought a bouquet, placed the flowers by the bed, and then casually breached the topic of the past.

"Chloe, about what happened back then... I'm sorry."

He handed me a bouquet of white roses, his voice low.

"I was too young, blinded by ambition."

"Sierra's father could give me everything I wanted. I didn't have a choice."

I looked at him, making no move to take the flowers.

No choice?

He had simply chosen the quickest, most brutal path to power. And my family had been the stepping-stone on his path to power.

"Caleb, you don't have to say that."

I forced a stiff smile.

"It's all in the past."

He gave me a deep look, a flicker of what might have been regret in his eyes.

"I know you hate me."

"Chloe, give me a chance to make it up to you. Please?"

Just then, the hospital room door swung open.

Sierra walked in carrying an exquisite tiered lunch box, followed by a swarm of reporters with cameras.

She feigned surprise at seeing me, then broke into a brilliant smile.

"Chloe, you're here too!"

"I heard your father was awake, so I had the chef make him something."

She placed the container on the bedside table, then took my arm and addressed the cameras.

"Caleb and I have decided to donate a scholarship to our alma mater in your name."

"To help talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds."

"Chloe has such a big heart. She forgave us long ago and even wishes us nothing but the best!"

The camera flashes erupted in a frenzy.

I was held in Sierra's grip, unable to move.

My father lay in the hospital bed, looking at the unfolding scene in confusion.

I couldn't lose my temper. Not here. I couldn't risk upsetting him.

All I could do was watch as Sierra and Caleb performed their moving drama at my father's bedside.

The next day, the news was everywhere.

"Real Estate Tycoon Caleb's Devotion Shines, Donates Lavish Scholarship to Atone for Past with Ex-Girlfriend"

"A Decade of Waiting: Sentimental CEO and Ex Reconcile"

In the articles, Caleb was painted as a paragon of loyalty and integrity.

And I was the woman he had redeemed, the one who had magnanimously forgiven him.

He used my father's life as leverage and public opinion as a weapon, casting me in the role of the pitiful victim who needed his mercy.

That night, I received a call from Caleb.

"Chloe, did you see the news?"

"This is the first step. I'll slowly help you ease back into the public eye."

"My reputation is not yours to restore."

My voice was glacial.

He was silent for a moment, then let out a soft, low chuckle.

"Chloe, don't be difficult."

"Your father's recovery is going to cost a lot of money."

"Can you afford that on what you make designing beach houses in Oregon?"

My heart sank.

"Are you threatening me?"

"I'm helping you."

His voice became gentle again, a silken trap.

"I know you don't like Sierra."

"I'll have her stay away from you from now on. Be good, okay?"

I hung up the phone, a chill seeping deep into my bones.

He used the gentlest of tones to do the cruelest of things, keeping me firmly under his control.

I woke up in a penthouse suite at the Pierre with a hangover from hell and a naked man who looked like he'd been carved from marble. Thinking he was a high-end escort I couldn't afford, I left my last hundred dollars and a petty note on the nightstand. "Service was acceptable. Keep the change." But when I rushed home to check on my dying father, I found the locks changed and my boyfriend, Chad, draped over my stepsister on the landing. My stepmother, Meredith, didn't even look up from her coffee as she handed me a legal folder. She told me to sign away my inheritance or she'd stop paying for my father's life support. The hospital called seconds later, demanding fifty thousand dollars by the end of the day, or they'd pull the plug. Meredith had already arranged my "payment": a dinner with Boris Gorsky, a predator who collected young women like trophies. He slid a confirmation for a five-hundred-thousand-dollar hospital deposit across the table and handed me a fountain pen. "Welcome to the firm, Mrs. Sanders." I signed the paper with a shaking hand, knowing I was trading my freedom for my father's life. But as August handed me his black card, I realized I finally had the weapon I needed to destroy the people who thought I was nothing.

I stood in the shadows of the hospital, watching my wife kiss another man while my grandmother lay dying upstairs. Just minutes ago, Erlene had snapped at me over the phone, calling me a "needy child" and claiming she was stuck at a business meeting across town. Now, she was stepping out of a red Porsche in a designer dress, wrapped in the arms of Andrew Hanson, the man who was supposed to be her "sick friend." "I'm not going up," Erlene said coldly when I confronted her in the rain. "I don't like watching people die. It's depressing. Tell her I came by." She looked at my soaked, cheap hoodie and my scuffed sneakers with pure disgust before turning her back on me to return to her lover’s side. I had to go back to the ICU alone and lie to my grandmother with her final breath, telling her Erlene was waiting just outside the door. As the heart monitor flatlined at 2:14 AM, my phone buzzed with a call from my mother-in-law, who screamed that I was a "worthless loser" and demanded I sign divorce papers immediately so her daughter could finally be with a "real man." For three years, I lived as a ghost, a poor driver who endured their insults and hid my true identity just to have a simple life with the woman I loved. I sacrificed my future for a family that treated me like a stray dog, only for them to spit on me while I held my grandmother’s cold hand. Why did I stay in the shadows for so long? Why did I let these people believe they could crush me under their expensive heels? I walked out of that hospital and threw my thick, black glasses onto the wet asphalt, watching a delivery truck grind them into dust. I didn't need the disguise anymore. I drove my rusted Honda to the towering iron gates of the George Estate, where the security team dropped their batons and snapped into a terrified salute. My father was waiting on the marble steps, but I wasn't there for a peaceful reunion. I was there to reclaim my inheritance and make sure Erlene realized exactly what she had thrown away.
