My Daughter Died While Her Father Called Us Frauds Chapter 1

The hair tie slipped from my fingers and hit the kitchen floor without a sound.

I stared at my phone. The CNN notification sat there, bold and impossible: *Captain Calum Stone, missing five years, found alive.*

Lily shifted in the chair in front of me, her half-finished braid unraveling. "Mommy?"

I couldn't move. My thumb found the notification. I tapped it.

The article loaded. There was a photograph. Calum stepping off a medical transport at JFK. Thinner than I remembered. Older. But unmistakably him. And beside him, her hand wrapped around his arm like she'd always belonged there—Vienna.

The caption underneath: *Captain Stone pictured with fiancée Vienna Walker.*

Fiancée.

I scrolled. The article mentioned a wedding. Already planned. Already in the tabloids. The Plaza Hotel. Three weeks away.

My breath came shallow. The phone screen blurred.

"Mommy, you're pulling."

I blinked. Looked down. My hand was still tangled in Lily's hair, frozen mid-braid. I let go immediately. "Sorry, baby."

She twisted around to look at me. Those eyes. Calum's eyes. Gray-blue like winter water. "Are you okay?"

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist. Hard. "I'm fine."

I wasn't fine.

I scrolled back to the photo. Vienna wore cream cashmere. Her smile was camera-ready. Calum's expression was neutral, distant. Like a man who'd learned to stand in photographs without feeling anything.

Five years. Five years I'd waited. Five years I'd told Lily her father was lost but not gone. Five years I'd kept his photo on my phone, his name in my contacts, his memory alive in our cramped apartment.

And he'd come back to her.

I called my mother.

She picked up on the third ring. "Amaris." Her voice was measured. Careful.

"Did you know?" My voice came out flat.

A pause. Too long. "Know what?"

"That Calum's alive. That he's with Vienna. That they're engaged."

Another pause. I heard her exhale. "We were going to tell you."

"When?"

"We didn't want to upset you unnecessarily."

I laughed. It came out sharp and wrong. "How long have you known?"

Silence.

"Mom. How long?"

"A few weeks." Her tone shifted into something defensive. "Vienna asked us not to say anything until Calum was ready. He's been through a lot, Amaris. He doesn't remember—"

"He doesn't remember me."

"He doesn't remember anything. The doctors said it's trauma-induced amnesia. Vienna's been helping him adjust."

I closed my eyes. "You've met him."

"We had dinner last week. He's... he's different. But he's trying."

In the background, I heard my father's voice. Quiet. Indistinct. Probably telling her to smooth things over.

"You had dinner with him," I repeated slowly. "With Vienna. And you didn't think to tell me that my daughter's father is alive."

"Amaris, you're being dramatic."

I hung up.

Lily was watching me. Her cereal spoon hovered mid-air, milk dripping back into the bowl. "Mommy?"

I knelt in front of her. Smoothed her hair. My hands were shaking. "Lily, do you remember what I told you about your daddy?"

She nodded slowly. "He got lost."

"He's not lost anymore."

Her eyes went wide. The spoon clattered into the bowl. "He's coming home?"

I looked at her. At those eyes. At the hope lighting up her face.

"I'm going to find out," I said.

The Walker family home looked exactly the same. White shutters. Brick facade. The rosebushes my mother pruned every spring. I'd grown up here. I'd left from this porch the day I moved into my first apartment with Calum.

I held Lily's hand as we walked up the steps.

I didn't knock. I used my key.

The living room was warm. Familiar. Vienna sat on the couch in cream cashmere, legs tucked beneath her. And beside her—Calum.

He looked up when we entered. His gaze passed over me. Flat. Faintly irritated.

Like I was a stranger.

Vienna's smile was gentle. Practiced. "Amaris. We didn't know you were coming."

I couldn't speak. I was staring at Calum. At the way he sat. The way he looked at me—or didn't.

Lily's hand tightened around mine.

I found my voice. "This is your daughter."

Calum's jaw tightened. He glanced at Vienna.

Vienna's expression shifted into something soft. Sorrowful. "Amaris, we talked about this."

"No," I said. "You talked. I'm telling him." I looked at Calum. "Her name is Lily. She's five. She has your eyes."

Lily stepped forward. Small. Brave. "Hi, Daddy."

Calum didn't move. Didn't smile. He looked at Vienna again. Then back at me. "I don't know you."

My mother appeared in the doorway. "Amaris, maybe we should—"

"I don't have a daughter," Calum said. His voice was calm. Final. "I don't know who you are. But you need to leave."

Lily's hand went slack in mine.

I looked at my mother. She wouldn't meet my eyes. My father stood behind her, straightening a coaster on the entry table.

Vienna touched Calum's arm. A small, possessive gesture.

"Leave," Calum repeated.

I picked up Lily. She didn't make a sound. I grabbed the suitcase I'd left by the door—the one I'd packed in case we needed to stay.

Nobody stopped me.

Outside, the rain started. I stood on the porch, Lily in my arms, the suitcase at my feet.

Upstairs, a curtain moved. My mother's silhouette in the window.

She didn't come down.
