Chapter 3

The elevator doors slid shut, sealing me inside the metal box. The bright green CLEAR banner glared from my phone screen, mocking the nine years I spent building the medical protocols for this franchise.

"Naomi, screenshot this right now," I ordered.

"I am capturing the portal feed," Naomi said. The rapid clatter of her mechanical keyboard echoed through the phone speaker. "The timestamp says 6:14 p.m. Tessa, your account requires two-factor authentication. How did they submit this?"

"Victor holds the administrative override for the medical portal. He bypassed my phone." I tapped the screen, pulling up the document properties. "Record the IP address and the exact upload time. Secure it on your local drive."

"Done. But if this goes to the league office, it is your word against the general manager. They will claim you authorized the override verbally."

I swiped away from the portal app and opened my encrypted medical drive.

"It is not my word. It is the data." I tapped the folder labeled L. ROWAN POST-GAME 8. "Eight days ago, Naomi. Did you see him walk off the field after the third sack?"

"The broadcast showed him limping."

"He was not limping. His gait was completely unstable. He lost motor function in his left leg. He dragged his cleat across the turf for ten yards." I pulled up the raw MRI scan and shared my screen over the video call. "Look at the C5-C6 vertebrae."

Naomi leaned closer to her monitor. The blue light from her screen reflected off her thick glasses. "Spinal cord signal changes. The cord is compressed."

"Four point two millimeters," I said. "He complained of bilateral numbness in his hands in the locker room. He dropped his own helmet on the floor. He could not even grip a plastic water bottle. And they just cleared him for full contact."

"If he takes a hit to the crown of his helmet tonight..." Naomi trailed off, her typing coming to a dead stop.

"He paralyzes himself from the neck down," I finished. "I need to lock this data before Victor wipes the internal clinic servers."

The elevator chimed. The metal doors parted, revealing the damp concrete of the stadium parking garage. My matte-black SUV sat isolated in the reserved section.

"Send the files to me," Naomi urged.

"I cannot send it to your league email," I told her, walking fast. My flats slapped against the concrete. "Victor's IT team monitors outbound traffic to the independent reviewers. They will intercept the attachment and flag my device."

"Then how do we verify the fake?"

"I am building a read-only packet right now." I reached my vehicle, pulled open the heavy driver's door, and slid into the leather seat. I slammed the door shut, cutting off the echo of the garage.

I rested the phone against the steering wheel. My thumbs flew across the screen. I dragged the black medical clearance report—the real one, with my denial—into a compressed file. I added the raw image hashes from the MRI machine. Finally, I attached the email headers from Victor's original suspension threat.

"Packet is sealed," I said. "I just need a blind drop."

A notification banner dropped down from the top of my screen. A text message from Serena.

I stared at the name. Eighteen months ago, Serena sat next to me at the national sports safety summit in Chicago. She was the only board member who voted for my twelve-page independent medical veto proposal. The league owners buried the document to protect their investments. Serena kept a copy.

I opened her message.

I have a server the coaches do not control.

An IP address and a secure login key followed the text.

"Naomi, I have an upload point," I said, my pulse jumping. "Serena just reached out."

"The safety chair?" Naomi asked. "If she sees that scan, she can bypass Victor entirely. She can pull Liam off the active roster from the league office."

"Uploading now." I copied the login key and pasted it into my file transfer app. I selected the sealed evidence packet.

The progress bar crawled across my screen.

Ten percent.

"Victor is going to realize you kept the raw data," Naomi warned.

"Let him."

Forty percent.

"He will come after your medical license, Tessa. He will claim you stole patient records."

"They are my son's records." I pressed my thumb against the edge of the phone case. "I am not letting them put him in a wheelchair for a trophy."

Eighty percent.

The progress bar hit one hundred. A green checkmark appeared. File delivered.

"It is locked," I said, exhaling a sharp breath. "He cannot delete it now. Serena has the hashes."

"She needs time to review them," Naomi said. "The league portal is updating the game day status right now."

I switched back to the league portal app to check the dashboard. The main screen loaded a massive graphic for tonight's championship game. Right below Liam's forged clearance form sat a red digital clock.

FINAL MEDICAL CHALLENGE WINDOW.

00:08:00.

"Eight minutes," I read aloud. "Once that clock hits zero, my formal appeal closes. After that, only an independent spotter can force an evaluation."

"Serena has to verify the forgery against the original MRI," Naomi said. "She has to cross-reference the upload IP addresses. You have to delay Grant. Keep him occupied."

"Grant does not delay. He steamrolls."

The red numbers shifted.

00:07:59.

My phone vibrated violently in my hand, cutting off the portal screen. An incoming call replaced the red clock.

Grant.

"He knows," I said.

"Do not answer it," Naomi said. "Do not give him anything he can record."

I ended the video call with Naomi. I stared at Grant's name flashing on the screen. The man I married. The man who just handed our son a death sentence.

I swiped the green accept button.

"You locked the wrong files, Tessa." Grant's voice was a low growl over the speaker.

"I secured the truth," I replied, gripping the leather steering wheel. "Serena has the raw MRI and the image hashes. She will match them against your forged clearance."

"You sent confidential team data to an outside server."

"I reported a critical medical violation."

"You threw a tantrum." I heard the squeak of a whiteboard marker in the background. He was already in the locker room, drawing up plays for a quarterback with a compromised spine. "You have exactly one hour to retract that file upload."

"Or what?" I asked. "You already fired me. You took my badge. You threw me out of the stadium."

"File one more dispute, and I will have Liam tell the world you are insane."

I had been Adrian Conway's executive assistant for five years, serving as the perfect, invisible shadow to the coldest billionaire in Manhattan. But a single night of weakness after a high-stakes charity gala left me staring at a positive pregnancy test in the office restroom, my heart hammering with a fear I couldn't escape. I tried to keep the secret and maintain my professionalism, but a freak accident in the lobby sent the test sliding across the marble floor-straight to the feet of Adrian's mother. The terrifying matriarch didn't offer a hand; she offered a cold, calculated ultimatum that turned my life into a high-stakes business transaction. Adrian didn't even look at me when he heard the news, his voice cutting like a scalpel as he called our night a "mistake" and an "irrelevancy." Within days, I was forced into a hollow marriage at City Hall, wearing a diamond that felt like a shackle and moving into a penthouse where I was treated like an unwanted intruder. The nightmare deepened when they slid a new contract across the table: I would carry the child to term, hand it over to the Conway family immediately after birth, and sign away all parental rights for five million dollars. "Don't expect me to play the loving husband. You are an employee who got a promotion," Adrian sneered, his eyes filled with pure loathing. He believed I had trapped him for his fortune, and his sister publicly branded me a "gold-digging parasite" while trying to force a DNA test. When I hesitated to sign the paper giving up my baby, Adrian leaned in with a terrifying calm, threatening to stop the life-saving medical payments for my dying mother. I was surrounded by unimaginable wealth but had never felt more impoverished, realizing that to the Conways, I was nothing more than a vessel for an heir. I couldn't understand how a man I had respected for years could be so monstrously cruel, holding my mother's life hostage just to steal my child. As I looked at the cold, clinical man who was now my husband, the desperation in my chest turned into a hard, freezing resolve. I picked up the pen and scrawled my name on the contract to save my mother, but I made a silent promise to the tiny life inside me. I had nine months to find a loophole, nine months to gather their secrets, and nine months to make Adrian Conway regret the day he ever thought he could own me.
