Chapter 4

"File one more dispute, and I will have Liam tell the world you are insane," Grant threatened over the speaker.

"You are bluffing," I said, my voice steady despite the violent tremor in my hands.

"Am I?" Grant asked. "You just lost your badge. You have no authority in this building. If you push this, I will make sure you never practice medicine in this state again."

"You cannot hide a ruptured disc, Grant. The pain will paralyze him before the fourth quarter."

"He is fine. You are hysterical."

I pressed the red icon and ended the call.

00:07:12.

I opened Serena's secure upload link again. I dragged the encrypted black folder—my formal medical denial—into the drop zone. I added the raw image hashes from Liam's MRI.

"Upload complete," the automated prompt flashed.

I locked the phone and threw it onto the passenger seat. My hands shook against the steering wheel. I squeezed the leather until my knuckles turned white.

I picked the device back up and dialed Naomi.

"Did Serena get the files?" I asked the second she answered.

"She is reviewing the hashes now," Naomi said, her keyboard clacking in the background. "But Tessa, you need to turn on the sports network. Right now."

"What is happening?"

"Victor called a press conference. He is live."

I swiped out of the call screen and tapped the breaking news alert. The video feed loaded instantly.

Victor stood at the podium in the team’s main media room. The bright camera flashes reflected off his silk tie. Behind him, the massive digital screen spanned the entire wall.

It did not show the team logo.

It showed a high-resolution photograph of my blue medical lanyard, cut in half, resting on the clinic floor.

"Dr. Rowan's access to this facility is permanently revoked," Victor announced to the packed room of reporters. His voice echoed through my car speakers.

"Are you confirming the chief medical officer was fired hours before kickoff?" a journalist in the front row stood up and asked.

"We suspended her," Victor corrected smoothly. "A team physician must maintain total objectivity. Unfortunately, Dr. Rowan allowed a severe family conflict to pollute her professional judgment."

"Are you saying she compromised player safety?" another reporter shouted.

"I am saying she prioritized personal grievances over medical facts," Victor said. He pointed a manicured finger at the camera. "We will not allow internal family drama to derail this championship."

"That is slander," I told Naomi over the open line. "He is building a narrative to discredit the real MRI."

"He is doing a fantastic job of it," Naomi replied. "The comments section on the live feed is already tearing you apart."

"Let them. Serena has the data."

The camera angle shifted. Grant sat at the long table to Victor's right. The silver championship trophy gleamed perfectly between them.

"Coach Rowan," a voice called out from the press pool. "Is your quarterback injured?"

Grant leaned into his microphone. "My quarterback is one hundred percent healthy. We have the legal, verified medical clearance right here."

He tapped a stack of papers on the table. The forged documents.

"My wife let her anxiety cloud her diagnosis," Grant continued, his tone thick with fake sympathy. "It is a tragedy. But this team moves forward."

"He is sitting right next to the trophy while he signs his son's death warrant," I said, hitting the screen record button on my phone. I captured every lie, saving the video file directly into my encrypted evidence packet.

"Tessa, you have the raw scans on your local drive," Naomi urged. "Leak them. Send the MRI to the reporters right now. It is the only way to stop Victor."

I opened my photo gallery. The grayscale image of Liam's compressed spine sat right at the top. One tap, and every journalist in that room would see the structural damage. Victor would be destroyed. Grant would be fired.

But the patient's name was stamped in the corner.

"I cannot do it," I said, closing the gallery.

"Why not? They are destroying your career!"

"Because I swore an oath to protect patient privacy," I snapped. "Releasing a private medical record to the public strips away my license forever. It violates federal law."

"They forged your signature!"

"And I will prove it through the proper channels. If I leak his file, I am no better than they are."

I was trapped by my own ethics, while they used my silence to build a guillotine.

The media room doors opened on the live feed.

Liam walked up to the podium. He wore his away-game jersey. He did not look at his father. He did not look at Victor.

He reached into his duffel bag and pulled out a worn, black-and-blue knee brace.

My stomach dropped.

"Is that Liam?" Naomi asked.

"Yes," I whispered.

Liam held the frayed fabric up to the glaring lights.

"Eight years ago, I tore my ACL," Liam told the quiet room. "My mother timed my rehab. She logged my steps. She kept me in this brace for two hundred and fourteen days."

He dropped the brace onto the podium. It hit the wood with a heavy thud.

"She told me it was for my own good," Liam said, his voice hardening. "She used my injury to control my life then. She is trying to use a fake injury to control my life today."

"Tessa?" Naomi asked. "What is he doing?"

"He is reading Grant's script," I said, a bitter taste flooding my mouth. "He is weaponizing his own recovery."

"She does not want me to play," Liam continued, staring directly into the camera lens. "She never wanted me to play. She wants me locked in her clinic, where she makes all the rules."

He took the months I spent holding ice packs to his swollen joints, the nights I stayed awake adjusting his pain medication, and twisted them into a cage. He framed my restraint—my refusal to leak his medical vulnerability to the world—as guilt.

The reporters furiously typed on their laptops. The flashbulbs fired in rapid succession, capturing the old knee brace resting next to the microphone.

"Are you playing tonight, Liam?" a reporter asked.

The league portal notification chimed on my device, overlaying the video feed.

The red clock hit zero.

CHALLENGE WINDOW CLOSED.

"The window is closed," Naomi announced over the phone, her tone defeated. "The formal pregame challenge period has ended."

Liam gripped the edges of the podium. He leaned closer to the microphone.

"This time I choose to believe Dad," Liam said, his gaze piercing through the screen. "Not her."

The broadcast cut to a wide shot of the stadium's exterior, but the audio kept looping his final sentence.

Not her. Not her. Not her.

I stared at the league dashboard on my phone. Right beneath the looping broadcast of my son's rejection, the real-time roster bar flashed bright green.

The digital text highlighted his name as STARTING QUARTERBACK.

But a single night of weakness after a high-stakes charity gala left me staring at a positive pregnancy test in the office restroom, my heart hammering with a fear I couldn't escape. I tried to keep the secret and maintain my professionalism, but a freak accident in the lobby sent the test sliding across the marble floor-straight to the feet of Adrian's mother. The terrifying matriarch didn't offer a hand; she offered a cold, calculated ultimatum that turned my life into a high-stakes business transaction. Adrian didn't even look at me when he heard the news, his voice cutting like a scalpel as he called our night a "mistake" and an "irrelevancy." Within days, I was forced into a hollow marriage at City Hall, wearing a diamond that felt like a shackle and moving into a penthouse where I was treated like an unwanted intruder. The nightmare deepened when they slid a new contract across the table: I would carry the child to term, hand it over to the Conway family immediately after birth, and sign away all parental rights for five million dollars. "Don't expect me to play the loving husband. You are an employee who got a promotion," Adrian sneered, his eyes filled with pure loathing. He believed I had trapped him for his fortune, and his sister publicly branded me a "gold-digging parasite" while trying to force a DNA test. When I hesitated to sign the paper giving up my baby, Adrian leaned in with a terrifying calm, threatening to stop the life-saving medical payments for my dying mother. I was surrounded by unimaginable wealth but had never felt more impoverished, realizing that to the Conways, I was nothing more than a vessel for an heir. I couldn't understand how a man I had respected for years could be so monstrously cruel, holding my mother's life hostage just to steal my child. As I looked at the cold, clinical man who was now my husband, the desperation in my chest turned into a hard, freezing resolve. I picked up the pen and scrawled my name on the contract to save my mother, but I made a silent promise to the tiny life inside me. I had nine months to find a loophole, nine months to gather their secrets, and nine months to make Adrian Conway regret the day he ever thought he could own me.
