Chapter 2

The silver tip of the pen hit the paper.

Liam dragged the ink right across the printed words. The dark line slashed through the phrase Family conflict severely affecting professional medical judgment.

"Done," Liam said.

He tossed the pen onto the desk. It clattered against my keyboard and rolled off the edge, hitting the floor.

"Look at me, Liam," I demanded.

He stopped, but he kept his eyes fixed on the floor tiles.

"You know your neck is compromised," I said. "You saw the scan."

"I saw a shadow," Liam replied, echoing his father's exact words. "I am playing tonight."

"Even if it means destroying my career?"

"You destroyed it yourself," Liam said. He turned his back and walked toward his locker.

Victor stepped out of the shadows near the examination table. The general manager picked up the signed suspension notice.

"A tragic end to a stellar tenure," Victor said smoothly.

"You orchestrated this," I said.

"I protected the franchise," Victor corrected. He reached for the trauma shears resting on my stainless-steel tray. "Step away from the desk, Dr. Rowan."

I planted my feet firmly on the linoleum. "You cannot do this."

"I already have." Victor closed the distance between us. "Your medical authority is officially revoked. You are now a trespasser in my stadium."

The cold metal of the shears brushed the fabric of my blouse. He hooked the heavy blades over the blue lanyard hanging around my neck.

Snip.

My medical clearance badge dropped. It hit the floor with a sharp crack.

"Your access is revoked," Victor stated. He kicked the plastic badge under the desk with the tip of his polished Oxford shoe.

"Three years ago, I put red tags on seven of your starting players," I told Victor, keeping my chin high. "They exhibited severe neurological symptoms. I benched them."

"Ancient history," Grant muttered.

"I dropped your injured reserve days by thirty-one percent," I continued, ignoring my husband. "I kept those men out of wheelchairs. You hated me for it then, and you hate me for it now."

Victor offered a thin smile. "That was a triumph for my safety culture initiative. The league gave me an executive award for that metric."

"You took the credit for my medical protocol," I shot back. "I saved this franchise millions in liability lawsuits."

"And today, you are the liability," Victor said. He pointed the shears toward the frosted glass door. "You cannot distinguish between being an overprotective mother and being a team doctor. We require a physician who prioritizes the franchise over personal paranoia."

"You require a yes-man," I said. "Someone willing to send a kid out to die for a trophy."

"Watch your mouth," Grant warned, stepping forward.

"Call security," Victor said to Grant. "We are wasting valuable pre-game time."

"I want the original files secured," I demanded. I slammed my hands flat on the desk. "Seal Liam's raw MRI data. Lock the initial diagnostic report in the encrypted league server."

"Those files belong to the organization," Victor countered. "We will manage them internally."

"They belong to the patient's private medical record," I insisted. "Seal them, or I go straight to the league commissioner right now. I will walk into his luxury suite and tell him you are hiding structural spinal damage."

Grant laughed. "Without your badge, you cannot even get on the suite level."

"I still have my phone," I warned. "I will call every sports journalist in this city."

Grant and Victor exchanged a tense look. A silent negotiation passed between them. Grant’s jaw tightened.

"Fine," Grant agreed. "The files get encrypted. Now get out of my clinic."

"Clear her personal items," Victor instructed.

One guard grabbed my Littmann stethoscope off the wall hook. He tossed it into the empty box. The chest piece banged against the cardboard bottom. He grabbed my framed medical degree next.

"Leave the degree," I snapped. "I will carry it myself."

The guard ignored me. He shoved the frame into the box sideways.

The other guard walked out to the hallway. A loud screeching sound echoed into the room. Metal scraped against metal. He walked back in, holding the heavy brass plaque that used to hang on my door. The engraved letters were scratched from his screwdriver.

He dropped the plaque right on top of my stethoscope.

"Escort her to the parking garage," Grant told the guards.

"Do not touch me," I said.

I grabbed my phone from the desk charger and walked out.

I pressed the call button for the elevator. The metal doors slid open. I stepped inside and turned around. The guards stopped at the threshold.

"Have a good evening, ma'am," one guard said.

The doors began to slide shut.

My phone vibrated violently in my palm.

I unlocked the screen. An automated system email sat at the top of my inbox. The timestamp read 6:14 p.m.

Subject: Medical Status Update - Liam Rowan.

I tapped the alert. The league portal loaded on my screen. A bright green banner stretched across the top.

CLEAR.

"No," I whispered.

I scrolled down the document. It was a flawless medical clearance form. The boxes for full contact were checked in bright digital blue. The injury status listed Liam as one hundred percent healthy.

At the very bottom, a digital signature sat on the dotted line.

Tessa Rowan, M.D.

They forged it. Grant and Victor submitted the fake clearance before I even reached the elevator.

My thumb hovered over the screen. I opened my contacts and hit the video call icon next to Naomi's name.

The call connected on the second ring.

Naomi’s face filled the screen. She sat in the league's independent review office, a heavy headset clamped over her ears.

"Tessa, what is going on?" Naomi asked. "I just got the portal notification."

"They suspended me," I said, pacing the small elevator box. "Grant and Victor forced Liam to sign a witness statement against me. They threw me out of the stadium."

"I see the portal update right here," Naomi said. Her fingers flew across a keyboard off-screen. "You cleared him?"

"I did not clear anyone!" I held the phone closer to my face. "I refused to sign that paper. They forged my digital authorization."

Naomi leaned closer to her monitor. The blue light from her screen reflected in her thick glasses.

"Tessa, wait," Naomi said, squinting at her screen.

"I am telling you, they faked it," I insisted. I switched the camera view. I pointed my phone lens directly at the green CLEAR document displayed on the portal app.

"Look at the timestamp," I told her. "They uploaded it three minutes ago. I was already in the hallway with security."

Naomi stared at the video feed. Her typing stopped completely.

"Tessa," Naomi said, her voice dropping to a dead flat tone. "That is not the version you just handed me."

I tried to keep the secret and maintain my professionalism, but a freak accident in the lobby sent the test sliding across the marble floor-straight to the feet of Adrian's mother. The terrifying matriarch didn't offer a hand; she offered a cold, calculated ultimatum that turned my life into a high-stakes business transaction. Adrian didn't even look at me when he heard the news, his voice cutting like a scalpel as he called our night a "mistake" and an "irrelevancy." Within days, I was forced into a hollow marriage at City Hall, wearing a diamond that felt like a shackle and moving into a penthouse where I was treated like an unwanted intruder. The nightmare deepened when they slid a new contract across the table: I would carry the child to term, hand it over to the Conway family immediately after birth, and sign away all parental rights for five million dollars. "Don't expect me to play the loving husband. You are an employee who got a promotion," Adrian sneered, his eyes filled with pure loathing. He believed I had trapped him for his fortune, and his sister publicly branded me a "gold-digging parasite" while trying to force a DNA test. When I hesitated to sign the paper giving up my baby, Adrian leaned in with a terrifying calm, threatening to stop the life-saving medical payments for my dying mother. I was surrounded by unimaginable wealth but had never felt more impoverished, realizing that to the Conways, I was nothing more than a vessel for an heir. I picked up the pen and scrawled my name on the contract to save my mother, but I made a silent promise to the tiny life inside me. I had nine months to find a loophole, nine months to gather their secrets, and nine months to make Adrian Conway regret the day he ever thought he could own me.
