Chapter 2

I found the receipt three days later.

I wasn't looking for it. I was cleaning the kitchen counter, wiping down the coffee rings and crumbs Damien always left behind. The paper was folded in half, tucked under a stack of mail. I picked it up without thinking.

It was a delivery receipt. From an Italian culinary equipment company. The kind of place that required appointments and had showrooms in Milan.

$200,000.

I read the number twice. Then three times. My brain couldn't process it.

Two hundred thousand dollars for a custom cooking station. Imported. Top-of-the-line induction burners, built-in sous vide system, temperature-controlled marble workspace. Delivery address: Damien's restaurant. Recipient name: Skyler Vasquez.

I set the receipt down carefully. My hands were shaking.

I looked at my Le Creuset pot sitting on the stove. The crack along the rim. The wire holding the handle in place. I'd asked Damien to replace it two years ago. He'd said we couldn't afford it right now. Maybe next month. Maybe for my birthday.

I picked up my phone. Opened Instagram. Went to Damien's profile.

The post was from yesterday. A photo of Skyler standing beside a gleaming steel cooking station that looked like it belonged in a spaceship. She was beaming, one hand resting on the marble countertop. Her chef's whites were pristine. Her hair was pulled back in a perfect ponytail.

The caption was short.

*You deserve nothing but the best.*

Posted by Damien. Not Skyler. Damien had written those words himself.

I scrolled through the comments. Heart emojis. Fire emojis. Other chefs congratulating him on "treating his team right." Skyler had replied with three heart emojis and the words *I'm so lucky.*

I sat down at the kitchen table. The receipt was still in my hand. I looked at my pot again. At the wire. At the crack.

Two hundred thousand dollars.

I couldn't afford the forty-two-dollar short ribs without saving for weeks. I took three buses to the farmers market because we only had one car and Damien always needed it. I cooked in a pot held together with wire.

And he'd spent two hundred thousand dollars on a cooking station for Skyler Vasquez.

I heard the door open. Damien came in, keys jangling. He tossed his jacket on the chair. Saw me at the table.

"Hey," he said. "What's for dinner?"

I held up the receipt.

He stopped. His face changed. Just for a second. Then he smiled. That easy, charming smile he used in interviews.

"Oh. That."

"Two hundred thousand dollars," I said quietly.

He shrugged. "It's a business expense. The restaurant needed an upgrade. Skyler's been working with some advanced techniques, and the equipment we had wasn't cutting it."

"I've been cooking with a cracked pot for two years."

"That's different. That's home cooking. This is professional."

I stared at him. "I asked you to replace this pot. You said we couldn't afford it."

"Maren." He sighed. Rubbed his face. "Can we not do this right now? I've had a long day."

"You posted about it. On Instagram. You wrote the caption yourself."

He looked confused. "What?"

"'You deserve nothing but the best.' You wrote that. For her."

"It's just social media. It's good for the brand. Skyler's got a huge following. When I post about her, it drives traffic to the restaurant."

"When's the last time you posted about me?"

He opened his mouth. Closed it. "You don't have an Instagram presence. You barely post anything."

"Because I'm too busy cooking for you."

"Maren, come on. Don't make this into something it's not."

I set the receipt on the table. Stood up. Walked past him.

"Where are you going?" he called after me.

I didn't answer. I went to the bedroom and closed the door.

I sat on the edge of the bed and opened Instagram again. Went to Skyler's profile this time.

Her feed was pristine. Every photo perfectly lit. Her in chef's whites. Her holding a whisk. Her laughing with Damien in the restaurant kitchen. Her standing beside the new cooking station.

I scrolled back. Found a photo from three weeks ago. Skyler and Damien side by side, plating a dish together. Her caption: *So grateful to work with someone who truly understands flavor đź’•*

Two weeks before that. Another photo. Damien's hand on her shoulder as he leaned over to look at something she was whisking. Her caption: *Learning from the best every single day 🙏✨*

A month before that. Skyler holding a bowl of something green and creamy. Her caption: *When your chef gets you đź’š*

I kept scrolling. Every few posts, there was Damien. Smiling. Laughing. Teaching. Touching her shoulder. Standing close.

And then I found the one that made my stomach drop.

It was from two months ago. A selfie. Skyler and Damien in the restaurant after hours. The kitchen empty behind them. Both of them holding wine glasses. Her head tilted toward his. His arm around her shoulders.

Her caption: *Family isn't blood. It's the people who show up đź’•*

I looked at the date. It was our anniversary. The night he'd texted me *Got stuck at a tasting event.*

I closed the app. Set my phone face-down on the nightstand.

I sat there in the dark for a long time.

Something inside me was changing. The quiet thing that had started on our anniversary was getting colder. Harder. Sharper.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I didn't go back into the kitchen and throw the receipt at him.

I just sat there. Thinking.

Two hundred thousand dollars.

You deserve nothing but the best.

Family isn't blood.

I stood up. Opened my laptop. Created a new folder. Titled it "Evidence."

Then I started taking screenshots.
