Chapter 3

I made the soup on Thursday afternoon. Grandma's bone broth. The simplest recipe in her journal. Just chicken bones, water, ginger, scallions, and time. Six hours of slow simmering. No shortcuts.

I ladled it into a thermos while it was still hot. Wrapped it in a kitchen towel. I wanted to surprise Damien. Maybe if I showed up at the restaurant, brought him something warm, we could talk. Really talk. Like we used to.

The screenshots were piling up in my Evidence folder. I had forty-three now. Instagram posts. Receipts. I hadn't confronted him yet. I didn't know what I was waiting for. Maybe I was hoping I'd find something that explained it all away. Some reasonable answer that would make everything make sense again.

I drove to the restaurant. It was almost nine. Past dinner service. The front windows were dark. I went around to the kitchen entrance in the alley. The door was propped open with a milk crate.

Inside, the kitchen was mostly empty. A few line cooks cleaning down their stations. One of them looked up when I came in.

"Mrs. White," he said. "Chef's in the private dining room."

"Thanks," I said.

I walked through the kitchen. The private dining room was at the back. A small space with one large table. Damien used it for VIP guests and industry dinners. The door was halfway open.

I heard laughter before I saw anything.

I stopped. Held the thermos against my chest. Something told me not to walk in. Not yet.

I stepped to the side. There was a gap between the door and the frame. I could see through it.

Damien was sitting at the table. Skyler was across from him. Just the two of them. Candles on the table. Wine glasses. Two plates with the remnants of what looked like a tasting menu.

Damien had a whole Dungeness crab in front of him. He was cracking it open with his hands. Carefully. Pulling out the meat in clean white pieces. He set each piece on Skyler's plate. One at a time. Like it was a ritual.

She was watching him. Smiling. Her chin resting on her hand.

"You're so good at that," she said softly.

He smiled. Didn't look up from the crab. "My wife taught me."

My chest tightened.

Skyler laughed. A light, pretty sound. "Well, she taught you well."

Damien placed another piece of crab on her plate. Picked up the wine bottle. Refilled her glass. Then his own.

I heard voices from the other end of the room. Two men I recognized. Industry people. Food writers. They were standing near the bar, holding drinks.

One of them laughed loudly. "Honestly, Damien, your wife is sweet, but she's just a housewife with nothing interesting to say. You need someone who gets your world."

I stopped breathing.

The other man snorted. "Yeah, I tried talking to her at that fundraiser last month. She just smiled and nodded. I don't think she knew who I was."

"She doesn't," the first man said. "She doesn't know anyone. It's kind of embarrassing, honestly."

I waited for Damien to say something. To tell them to shut up. To defend me.

He said nothing.

He just smiled. Picked up his wine glass. Took a sip. Then he set it down and placed another piece of crab on Skyler's plate.

His hands were gentle. Careful. The way he used to touch me.

Skyler reached across the table. Put her hand over his. "Thank you," she said quietly.

He didn't pull away.

I looked down at the thermos in my hands. The soup was still warm. I could feel the heat through the towel.

I turned around. Walked back through the kitchen. No one looked at me. I pushed through the alley door and stood outside in the cold.

I set the thermos on the ground. Leaned against the brick wall. Stared at the dumpster across from me.

I didn't cry. I thought I would. But I didn't.

I just felt cold. Like something inside me had frozen over.

I picked up the thermos. Walked to my car. Got in. Set the soup on the passenger seat.

I drove home. Parked. Sat in the driveway for a long time.

When I finally went inside, I poured the soup down the sink. Watched it swirl into the drain. Rinsed the thermos. Dried it. Put it back in the cabinet.

Then I opened my laptop. Went to the Evidence folder. Created a new document.

I titled it: "Timeline."

I started typing. Every dinner I'd missed. Every late night. Every text that said *Don't wait up.* Every Instagram post. Every receipt. Every lie.

I typed until my hands hurt.

Damien came home at midnight. I heard him in the hallway. He came into the bedroom. Saw me at the desk.

"Hey," he said. "You're still up?"

I didn't turn around. "Yeah."

"What are you working on?"

"Just some stuff."

He yawned. Started unbuttoning his shirt. "I'm exhausted. Long night."

"I'm sure," I said quietly.

He didn't hear the edge in my voice. Or he pretended not to.

He got into bed. Was asleep in five minutes.

I kept typing.

I didn't bring him soup again.
