Chapter 5

The Great Hall smelled of roasted venison, spiced cider, and burning pine logs.

It was the exact same scent as last year. The guest list hadn't changed either. Three allied Alphas sat along the western tables with their Betas and senior trackers. Shadowridge elders occupied the eastern wing. Down the center, ranked warriors and their mates filled the long benches, their voices rising over the clatter of silverware and the crackle of the hearths.

I sat at Jared’s right hand, dressed in midnight-blue silk. The collar was high, brushing my jawline and hiding the faint, yellowing trace of the bruise on my neck where Jared's Alpha command had forced me down weeks ago.

I played my part with practiced ease. When Alpha Brennan from the Pinecrest Pack raised his glass to our border treaties, I met his eyes, smiled with measured warmth, and drank. When the elder council members stopped to pay their respects, I greeted each by name and asked after their families. For four years, I had built the scaffolding that kept this pack upright. Tonight, I made sure every single beam looked solid.

Beside me, Jared was utterly at ease. He leaned back in his carved oak chair, one arm resting over the backrest, laughing at a joke made by his Beta. His Alpha aura hummed with casual arrogance. He looked like a man who believed the world existed solely to serve his appetites.

A few seats down, his mother Eleanor caught my eye over the rim of her glass. Her thin lips curved into a smug, triumphant smile. She looked at me the way a butcher looks at a carcass that had already stopped kicking. In her mind, she and her son had won. They had brought the wolfless Luna to her knees before the pack, and now I was tame.

I gave her a small, polite nod, picked up my water goblet, and took a slow sip.

Then, the heavy double doors at the far end of the Great Hall slammed open.

The sound cracked through the room like thunder. The iron latch struck the stone wall with a violent clang that echoed off the high rafters.

The laughter died instantly. A hundred wolves went still, turning toward the cold draft rushing in from the night.

A woman stood in the open doorway.

It was Malia. She held four-year-old Anakin perched on her hip. But it wasn't just her presence that sent a shockwave through the hall—it was what she wore. She was dressed in an ivory silk gown, laced across the collarbone with spun silver thread. It was cut from the exact ceremonial pattern reserved exclusively for an incoming Luna’s presentation.

Every wolf in the room recognized the fabric. It was an open, brazen territorial claim.

Malia didn't hesitate. She stepped over the threshold, her chin held high, her lips parted in a bright, triumphant smile. She walked down the center aisle between the crowded tables with the unhurried swagger of someone who believed she had already won the crown. Anakin clung to her shoulder, clutching a small wooden car, his wide brown eyes blinking at the sudden glare of the chandeliers.

She stopped ten feet from the foot of the dais.

"The wait is over, Jared," Malia announced. Her voice was clear, ringing with theatrical defiance that reached every corner of the frozen room. "No more hiding in the shadows. No more lies."

A suffocating hush blanketed the Great Hall. Nobody breathed.

Malia shifted Anakin higher on her hip and looked directly up at the high table. "You made me a promise. You said the moment you were ready, you would reject this barren, wolfless shell and give Shadowridge what it actually needs." She gestured toward the child in her arms. "I brought you your blood heir. The son this pack has waited four years for. Honor your word, Jared. Reject Victoria, and mark me as your real Luna."

The air in the room seemed to vanish.

Whispers caught in throats before they could start. The allied Alphas stiffened, their gazes darting from Malia to the dais in stunned disbelief. Elders stared with their mouths half-open. Eleanor froze, her crystal goblet suspended halfway to her lips, her eyes locked in horror on the child standing in the light.

Beside me, Jared didn't move.

The color completely drained from his face, leaving his skin an ashen, sickly grey. The arrogant smirk vanished. The glass of scotch in his fingers slipped, sloshing dark amber liquor over the white linen tablecloth.

And then, our mate bond erupted.

The psychic link between our chests, usually heavy with his greasy dominance, tore wide open with raw, screaming panic. It wasn't the cold calculation of an Alpha managing a crisis. It was the blind, flailing terror of a thief caught with his hands in the vault. His pulse hammered wildly against my ribs through the bond, chaotic and frantic. He was drowning in his own overreach.

I didn't flinch. I didn't look down at my hands.

Slowly, deliberately, I set my glass onto the table.

I pushed my chair back. The wooden legs scraped against the stone dais, the quiet sound cutting through the dead silence like a blade.

I stood up.

I didn't rush. I smoothed the midnight-blue silk over my hips and stepped out from behind the high table, walking to the edge of the dais.

For the first time in four years, I turned my head and looked directly at Jared.

There was no filtered warmth in my eyes. There was no polite deference, no quiet patience, and no performance of a dutiful Luna trying to keep a crumbling house together. I stripped away every layer of accommodation I had worn for him.

I looked at him with cold, absolute clarity. It was the exact same way I had looked at the offshore wire transfers and the tuition receipts the night I mapped his betrayal line by line. I looked at a man who was already empty.

The entire hall remained frozen in dead, terrifying silence.

Jared looked back at me, his chest heaving, his eyes wide and hollow with fear. His jaw trembled. His mouth fell open, trying to summon an Alpha command, a lie, anything to stop what was coming.

Nothing came out.
