My Alpha Used Wolfsbane to Kill Our Heirs Novel Cover

My Alpha Used Wolfsbane to Kill Our Heirs

At 6:40 AM on a grim Thursday, the bleeding finally ceased. Confined to the healing ward, I could only watch the clock while Fiona cleared away the bloodied towels. My third pup was taken from me before I ever heard its heartbeat. Desperate for comfort, I reached deep inside for my wolf, only to find a silent, terrifying void. My inner companion was entirely gone, leaving behind a hollow space where my strength and our pack's future once thrived.

Chapter 2

I learned to cry on command the week after I found the letters.

It wasn't hard. I thought of the tiny heart drawn in the margin of a dosage chart, and my eyes filled right on cue. Carmen came to the healing ward twice more that week, sat on the edge of my bed, held my hand with her warm skin, and each time I let my voice crack when I thanked her.

"You didn't have to come," I whispered once, gripping her fingers back. "You've been so good to me, Carmen."

Her mouth twitched. For half a second I watched her decide whether I was being sincere or mocking her, and I made sure my face gave her nothing but grateful, wounded devotion. She patted my hand and told me the Goddess tested the strongest wolves hardest. I nodded like I believed her.

With Dallas I was even better. I clung to his arm at pack dinners, laughed a half-beat too fast at jokes that weren't funny, tucked my head against his shoulder when the healers came to check on me, murmuring how lucky I was to have such a devoted mate. I watched the guilt drain out of him day by day, replaced by something looser, easier. He started sleeping without turning his back to me. He started calling me *love* again like he meant it.

He thought I was breaking. He mistook it for pity, the way a man mistakes a trap for surrender.

Every morning I poured the tonic into a specimen vial instead of my mouth, capped it, and wrote the date on a strip of tape in my own careful hand. I lined them up in a shoebox at the back of my closet, behind winter boots he never touched. Fourteen vials by the time of the Greywood gala. Fourteen little dates, fourteen little proofs.

Carmen watched my performance from across rooms with a small, satisfied curl at the corner of her mouth, like a woman admiring her own handiwork. I smiled back at her every time. It cost me nothing. I had already stopped being the woman she thought she was destroying.

The Greywood Pack's great hall had a staircase built from pale river stone, wide enough for four wolves abreast, worn smooth by a hundred years of alliance galas. I walked it on Dallas's arm in a green gown he'd picked out himself, smiling at Alphas whose names I'd learned to recite like a prayer. Carmen trailed a few steps behind us in her role as "pack liaison," close enough to Dallas that I'd stopped bothering to notice.

I felt her fall into step behind me on the stairs. I didn't turn.

The shove came flat between my shoulder blades, hard and sudden, timed to the exact second my foot left the stone.

There was no time to catch a railing. The world tilted, and then it was all edges — stone against my hip, my elbow, the side of my skull, each step a fresh, bright burst of pain until I hit the flagstone floor and something inside me tore.

I heard the gasp of the room before I felt the blood. It pooled warm under my cheek, spreading fast across cold stone.

"Dallas—" Carmen's voice, high and frightened, pitch-perfect. "I tried to catch her, I— my wrist—"

Footsteps. His footsteps. I watched his shoes stop an arm's length from my face, and for one absurd second I thought he was reaching for me.

He wasn't. He stepped over me — one long stride, the hem of his coat brushing my hair — and swept Carmen up against his chest, checking the thin red line on her wrist like it was a mortal wound.

"Healer!" he shouted, already carrying her away. "Now!"

I lay on the flagstones and watched the ceiling swim. Three Alphas stood at the top of the stairs. None of them moved for a long, terrible moment. Then Greywood warriors broke rank, kneeling around me, calling for their own healer, lifting me onto something hard and cold.

No one spoke. That was the part I would remember longest — not the pain, but the silence, three packs' worth of leadership watching an Alpha step over his bleeding Luna and saying nothing at all.

On the healer's table in Greywood's secondary ward, deep under years of wolfsbane fog, something moved.

It wasn't pain. I know pain; pain had been my closest companion for three years. This was a pulse, furious and specific, slamming once against some invisible wall inside my chest hard enough that I gasped out loud.

The healer pressed harder on the gauze at my hip. "I know, sweetheart. I know it hurts."

It came again. And again. Alive. Enraged. Waiting.

I pressed my palm flat against my sternum and said nothing, and let her believe I was only bleeding.
