My Alpha Used Wolfsbane to Kill Our Heirs Novel Cover

My Alpha Used Wolfsbane to Kill Our Heirs

At 6:40 AM on a grim Thursday, the bleeding finally ceased. Confined to the healing ward, I could only watch the clock while Fiona cleared away the bloodied towels. My third pup was taken from me before I ever heard its heartbeat. Desperate for comfort, I reached deep inside for my wolf, only to find a silent, terrifying void. My inner companion was entirely gone, leaving behind a hollow space where my strength and our pack's future once thrived.

Chapter 3

Dallas came to the secondary ward once, after they'd finished stitching Carmen's wrist and wrapping it in more gauze than a scratch that size ever needed.

He stood at the foot of my cot with his hands in his pockets, looking down at me like a man inspecting a fence he'd have to repair before winter.

"You should have been more careful on those stairs," he said. His voice was even. Almost gentle. The voice of a concerned Alpha, the one he used for pack meetings when he wanted people to think he cared about the outcome.

I looked up at him. I let my eyes stay red-rimmed, let my mouth tremble at the corner, let three years of practice arrange my face into something broken and ashamed.

"You're right," I whispered. "I'm so sorry. I'll be more careful."

He squeezed my hand once. Callused fingers, warm, familiar. The same hand that had poured my tonic every morning for three years, always with a kiss to my forehead.

Then he left.

I watched the door swing shut behind him and turned my face to the wall. Under my palm, flat against my sternum, my wolf slammed against that invisible wall again, furious, alive, waiting.

"I know," I whispered to her. "I know."

Back in Ironridge, once the healers cleared me and the bruises had faded to pale yellow ghosts along my hip, I asked Dallas to meet me in the Alpha suite. Alone.

I'd practiced my voice in the mirror that morning until it broke exactly where I wanted it to break.

"I've been thinking," I said, when he came in and shut the door, "about the fall. About everything." I let my eyes fill. "I blame myself, Dallas. For the distance between us. For the babies we lost. Maybe I wasn't the Luna you needed."

Something moved behind his eyes. Guilt, I thought. Or maybe just relief that I was finally where he wanted me — small, apologetic, grateful for whatever he decided to give me.

"Evelynn—"

"Let me finish." I reached into the drawer of the writing desk and drew out the document, bound in leather the color of dried blood, the kind old enough to feel important just from its weight. "I found this in the pack archives. An old tradition. A renewed loyalty pact. Alphas and Lunas used to sign it after hardship, to start clean." I held it out to him with both hands, like an offering. "I want us to start clean, Dallas."

He took it. Read the title. His eyes skimmed the first paragraph — renewed devotion, pack unity, the language of second chances — and I watched him relax, watched the tension drain out of his shoulders the way it always did when he thought he'd gotten away with something.

He didn't turn the page.

"This means a lot to you?" he asked, already reaching for the ceremonial blade on the desk.

"More than you know."

He pressed his thumb to the blade without looking at it, the same careless motion he used signing pack ledgers he never read either. A bead of blood welled up, dark and quick. He pressed it to the seal at the bottom of the page — the page he hadn't turned, the page with the forfeiture clause written in language three centuries old, the language Elder Corbin had once mentioned to me over tea without understanding what he was handing me.

The seal glowed faint gold for half a second and went dark.

Signed. Sealed. Binding.

"There," he said, wiping his thumb on his slacks. "Happy?"

"Very." I smiled at him with everything I had left, soft and grateful and adoring, the exact face of a woman who believed her marriage had just been saved.

He kissed my forehead — that same gesture, the one that used to mean something — and left the room without a backward glance.

I didn't breathe normally until the door clicked shut behind him.

Three days later, I sat at my writing desk long after the pack had gone quiet for the night, arranging three things into a single sealed envelope: a photographed copy of the signed Accord, the wolfsbane letters and dosage charts, and a data card holding one drunken confession recorded in the dark.

I wrote the cover letter by hand, the way I used to write lab notes — precise, unadorned, no room for doubt.

*Elder Reyna,* it began. *I am invoking a binding Luna Accord, properly signed and sealed under Ironridge law, on grounds of proven harm to the Luna and broken fidelity by the Alpha. I am requesting the Ashwood Council hold this evidence in secure escrow pending a formal tribunal. I trust your integrity above any pack's convenience, including my own.*

I signed my name the way I always had.

*Evelynn Collins, Luna of Ironridge.*

Then, beneath it, in smaller letters, I added three more words.

*— for now.*

I sealed the envelope and gave it to the Greywood warrior who'd carried me off those bloody flagstones, the one who still owed me a debt he didn't know how to repay. He asked no questions. He only bowed his head and rode north before dawn, before Ironridge had even begun to stir.
