Chapter 3

The scent appeared in the kitchen first.

A whisper of gardenias near the coffee machine on Tuesday morning. Faint, but unmistakable. Sickly-sweet, hovering just above the granite counter where I always poured my first cup.

I noticed. I said nothing. I made my coffee and went to my office.

Wednesday, the meeting room. A trace along the back of the chair I always took. Thursday, the hallway outside the Alpha suite — a smear at shoulder height, as if she had leaned against the wall for just long enough to leave a mark.

Lily was learning the territory of war. Quietly. Bit by bit. She was testing how far she could push before the Luna noticed.

The Luna noticed everything.

I photographed each location with my phone. Timestamp, angle, lighting. I uploaded the images to the encrypted folder on the USB drive. Patterns mattered. Documentation mattered. A future Lycan Council inquiry would not care about my feelings — it would care about evidence.

Friday evening, pack dinner.

Elliot sat at the head of the long table, charming and easy, recounting some story from the training grounds. Beta Marcus laughed on cue. The senior wolves nodded. The room hummed with the comfortable warmth of a pack that believed itself whole.

I sat at the opposite end, in the Luna's chair. I cut my roasted chicken into precise pieces. I asked Elder Constance about her grandson's coursework. I smiled at the right moments.

Lily was three seats to my left.

She rose during the second course, wine glass in hand, gesturing animatedly to someone across the table. The glass tipped. Red wine arced across the linen and pooled near my place setting.

"Oh — Luna, I'm so sorry!"

She was at my side in an instant, napkin in hand, leaning over my plate. Her sleeve brushed my arm. Her wrist pressed flat against the tablecloth, dragging slow across the fabric beside my water glass. Gardenias bloomed in the air. Heavy. Cloying.

My wolf flexed her claws inside my chest.

I lifted my own napkin. I dabbed the corner of the spill calmly.

"It's nothing," I said. My voice was warm. "Wine washes out. Don't trouble yourself."

She looked up at me through her lashes. For one breath, the mask slipped. I saw it — the small, hungry triumph in her eyes.

I smiled at her.

It was the kind of smile that should have warned a smarter woman.

"Sit, Lily. Finish your dinner."

She sat.

Under the table, I slipped my phone from my lap and took one quiet photograph of the wine-stained linen with her scent embedded in it. The image saved to the encrypted folder before the dessert course arrived.

Saturday night, I drove to Maren's clinic.

The lights were off in the front windows. I parked in the alley and entered through the back. Maren was waiting in the examination room, her coat still on, her bag at her feet.

I set the envelope on the examination table between us.

It was thick. Sealed. Inside was enough to retire on — comfortably, anywhere she wanted, for the rest of her life.

"I need medical records," I said.

Maren did not touch the envelope. She looked at it. Then she looked at me.

"What kind."

"Miscarriage. Stress-induced. Traumatic. Dated to align with the week Elliot's affair became confirmable."

The room went very still.

Maren's hands stayed at her sides. Her face did not change. I watched her process it — what I was asking, what it would do, what it would cost her if it were ever traced back.

A long silence.

Then she walked to the locked drawer beneath the counter. She opened it with a small brass key she wore around her neck. She removed a worn leather ledger and laid it open on the metal tray.

She uncapped a pen.

She wrote one line. I did not see what it said. She closed the ledger and returned it to the drawer.

Then she pulled a blank medical record form from the top shelf and sat down at her desk.

"Six weeks," she said quietly. "Acute psychological distress as the documented cause. Standard recovery protocol noted. Confidential filing under Luna privilege, so the Alpha cannot request review without a Council subpoena."

"Yes."

Her pen moved across the form in clean, professional strokes.

She did not look at me again until she was finished. When she handed me the sealed file, her eyes met mine for one steady beat.

"He will believe this," she said. "He will believe it completely."

"I know."

She nodded once and turned away.

I left the envelope on the examination table and walked out into the cold.

Julian called Sunday morning.

"It's ready," he said. "Where do you want the handoff?"

I met him in the parking garage of a human department store, three levels underground. He passed me a leather portfolio across the console of his car. Sixty pages of inter-pack alliance treaties. The kind of routine bureaucratic stack Elliot signed without reading every other week.

I sat in my own car and reviewed it under the dome light.

Page forty-seven.

The Mate Rejection declaration was perfect. The font matched. The header matched. The margins matched. The formal language read like one more clause in one more treaty — until the eye caught the specific words. Reject. Sever. Dissolve.

I flipped to the page three times. From a distance. At a glance. The way Elliot would see it as he signed his way through the pile, half-listening to the morning news, drinking his black coffee.

It was invisible.

I closed the portfolio.

I drove home and placed the stack in the official correspondence tray on Elliot's desk, second from the top, exactly where his hand would reach next Sunday morning.

Then I went upstairs and started packing the last of my things.
