Chapter 4

Elliot came home Saturday night with mud on his boots and exhaustion etched into the lines around his eyes.

Three days on the northern border. A training run with the Crimson Hollow Pack. He stripped off his jacket in the foyer and dropped his bag beside the stairs, every movement heavier than the last.

I met him at the landing with a glass of water and a kiss on his cheek.

"Long run?"

"Brutal." He rolled his shoulder, wincing. "Their northern boundary is a mess. We've got six months of cleanup work ahead."

"You should sleep in tomorrow."

He laughed under his breath, the kind of laugh that wasn't really a laugh. "You know I can't. Sunday ledgers."

"I know." I smiled. "Black coffee will be ready at seven."

He brushed his knuckles against my jaw on his way past me. The gesture was automatic. Possessive. The kind of touch a man gives to a thing he owns and has stopped seeing.

I watched him climb the rest of the stairs.

I did not let myself feel anything.

---

Sunday morning arrived gray and cold.

I was already awake when his alarm sounded. I had laid out his clothes the night before — soft gray sweater, dark jeans. The mug for his coffee was already on the counter. The kettle was already hot.

He came down at seven-fifteen. Hair still damp from the shower. The exhaustion hadn't lifted. His eyes were rimmed red and his movements carried the slow, dragging weight of a wolf whose body had been pushed past its limits.

Perfect.

"Coffee's ready," I said, sliding the mug across the island.

"You're a saint."

He carried it into his study.

I made myself a cup of tea. I selected a novel from the shelf in the sitting room — something thick, something I had read before, something I wouldn't actually need to follow. I curled into the armchair across from his study door, where he could see me if he looked up, and where I could hear every sound he made.

I opened to page one.

The scratch of his pen began at seven-thirty.

It was a sound I had heard a thousand times. The fine-tipped fountain pen he favored, gliding across heavy bond paper. Each signature a small confident slash. He didn't read what he signed. He never had. Beta Marcus vetted every document before it reached this desk, and Elliot trusted Marcus the way he trusted his own right hand.

Marcus had not vetted page forty-seven.

I turned a page in my book.

The pen scratched. Paused. Scratched again.

My tea cooled in my hands. I traced the rim of the cup with my fingertip — slow, idle circles. My heartbeat was steady. I had practiced this. I had imagined this moment so many times that when it arrived, it felt almost ordinary.

I counted the signatures by sound.

Forty-three. Forty-four. Forty-five.

Forty-six.

A breath of pause. The rustle of paper turning.

Forty-seven.

The scratch was no different from the others. Clean. Confident. The pen moved across the page in the same easy arc it had moved across every other page that morning.

I turned a page in my book.

Forty-eight. Forty-nine.

I did not look up. I did not breathe differently. I did not let a single muscle in my face shift.

Somewhere inside my chest, my wolf went very, very still — the kind of stillness a predator holds in the half-second before a kill.

It was done.

Elliot kept signing. He had no idea that the bond connecting him to me — the bond he believed was eternal, the bond he had treated as a leash and a guarantee — had just been legally severed by his own hand.

The Moon Goddess's binding would hold until both signatures were witnessed and filed. Julian would file at noon tomorrow, after I was already in the air.

I turned another page.

At eight-fifteen, Elliot emerged from the study, the stack of signed treaties tucked under his arm. He set them on the foyer table for Marcus to collect.

"I'm going back to bed for an hour," he said.

"Good." I closed my book and rose. "I'll be in my office."

He didn't kiss me on the way past. He was too tired to remember.

I waited until I heard the bedroom door close upstairs.

Then I walked to the foyer table, lifted page forty-seven from the stack, and slid it into the leather portfolio under my arm.

---

I packed over two nights.

A single carry-on bag. Black, unremarkable, the kind that drew no attention at an airport.

Inside: my laptop. The USB drive. The forged miscarriage file in its sealed envelope. The signed rejection declaration. A folder of identity documents Julian had prepared under the human alias Camille Vossberg. Three changes of clothes. Toiletries. Nothing sentimental.

Except two things.

The small pressed wildflower from the pack garden — a violet I had picked the spring I first arrived at the Bloodstone Pack as a young Luna, when I still believed in everything this place was supposed to be. I tucked it inside the back flap of my wallet.

And Leo's first ultrasound scan. A grainy black-and-white printout. A small white curve no bigger than a bean. I slid it into the inside pocket of the bag, against the lining, where nothing could crease it.

At eleven o'clock on Sunday night, I sat on the edge of my bed in the dark and opened the mind-link.

I had not used it in eight years. The channel felt rusty, narrow, like a door swollen shut from disuse.

I pushed through it carefully.

*Kieran. I need to come home. Is the door open?*

The response came in under thirty seconds. Warm. Immediate. As if he had been sitting beside the door for years, waiting.

*It's always been open.*

I closed the link.

I booked the flight for six-fifteen the next morning.

Then I lay down on my side of the bed for the last time, my hand resting flat against my abdomen, and I waited for the dawn.
