My Alpha Replaced Our Baby With His Mistress’s Daughter

At the pre-feast checkup, the scent-wand glided over Anya’s skin—and something inside me vanished. I’ve always smelled what others miss; Mitchell swore I could scent a lie a county away. But when the wand crossed my daughter’s wrist, my nose caught a truth no one prepared me for: her bloodline carried no thread of mine. Now I must confront the man who shares my bed and the mistress whose daughter wears my name. My mate, my daughter, and the life I thought we built are all on the line.

Chapter 2

The horn sounded forty minutes later.

I knew that sound. I'd called that assembly myself a hundred times — for alliance news, for warrior promotions, for the night we buried Old Marcus and I stood up in front of everyone and said words about him that made grown wolves cry. Three long notes. Everyone comes. No exceptions.

I walked out to the bonfire clearing because there was nothing else to do. Running would have made me look like what he was about to tell them I was.

They were already gathered when I got there. Hundreds of them. Pups on their fathers' shoulders. Warriors I'd trained, standing with their arms crossed. Elder Ruth near the front with Anya's hand in hers, and Anya waved at me, her face bright and unbothered, and I lifted my hand back because my body still knew how to do that.

Mitchell stood on the speaking platform with the fire throwing orange up the side of his face.

He looked calm. That was the part I keep coming back to. Not angry. Not sorry. Calm, the way you are when you've already decided and you're just waiting for the room to catch up.

"Shadowvale," he said, and his voice carried the Alpha weight, pressing down on every neck in that clearing. "There's something the pack needs to hear from me directly."

I felt it then. My wolf lifted her head inside me and went very still, like an animal that hears a rifle bolt.

"Mitchell," I said. Not loud. Just his name.

He didn't look at me.

"I, Mitchell, Alpha of Shadowvale—"

Someone in the crowd made a sound. A woman, I think. Somebody who understood the shape of a sentence that starts that way.

"—reject you, Kora, as my mate and Luna."

I want to tell you I braced. I didn't. There is no bracing for it.

The mark on my neck split. That's the only word for it — split, like ice cracking through a windshield, a line of white cold tearing open under my jaw and then flooding down, into my collarbone, into my ribs, into the space where the bond had sat since I was eighteen years old. Six years of him living in my chest. Gone in the time it takes to say one sentence.

Cold. Everyone talks about the pain, and there was pain, but what I remember is how *cold* it was. Like something warm had been pulled out of me and left a wet hollow behind.

I staggered. One step, to the left. My hand went up to my throat and came away with blood on the fingers.

Inside me my wolf screamed. I've never heard anything like it — a shriek that filled my whole skull, tearing, frantic, an animal in a trap chewing at her own leg. And then, mid-sound, she stopped. Not calmed. *Stopped.* Like a door slammed on her throat. The silence where she'd been was worse than the scream.

The fire kept crackling. Nobody in that clearing moved.

Skyler stepped out of the crowd.

She walked up onto the platform and stood at Mitchell's right side, where I had stood for six years, and she folded her hands in front of her and looked at me. Not gloating. That's what got me. Her face was small and neat and *satisfied*, the way you look when a plan you've been holding your breath on finally lands. She didn't smile. She didn't need to.

Six years. She brought me water during my labor. She held a cloth to my forehead.

I opened my mouth. I had the paper in my sleeve. I had the words ready — *ask him where our daughter is, ask him, all of you, ask him* — and I got exactly one syllable out.

"Ask—"

Hands closed on both my arms.

Grant. Of course it was Grant. He didn't say anything, didn't meet my eyes, just clamped down with a Beta's grip and hauled me backward out of the firelight. I heard Anya's voice go up high and confused behind me — "Mama?" — and Elder Ruth shushing her, and then the sound of hundreds of wolves not saying a single word while their Luna was dragged out of the clearing.

Not one of them stepped forward. Not one.

Down the path. Through the pack house. Down the basement stairs I'd only ever walked once, six years ago, when Mitchell showed me the isolation den and said, *we'll never need it, but every pack has one.*

Grant shoved me in. The door was silver-lined; I felt it burn the air before I felt it burn my skin. The lock turned over three times.

I stood in the dark and listened to his footsteps go back up.

The blood confirmation was still in my sleeve. Folded, dry, real. I checked it with two fingers, then pressed my back flat against the far wall and slid down until I was sitting on the stone.

Breathe in. Breathe out.

My neck was wet. My chest was hollow. And where my wolf had lived my whole life, there was nothing answering me at all.

So I sat there in the dark and I did the only thing left.

I breathed.
