Chapter 3

The dizziness started on the third morning.

I noticed it the way I noticed everything now — not with alarm, but with the cold, cataloguing attention I had learned to apply to things I could not immediately explain. I was standing at the window with my morning tonic in my hand, watching the training yard below, when the room tilted slightly to the left. I gripped the windowsill. It passed in seconds. I finished the tonic, set the cup down, and made a note of it the way I made notes of everything: time, duration, severity.

I told myself it was the pregnancy. Six months along, under sustained stress, sleeping in a room that smelled faintly of another woman's perfume no matter how many times I opened the windows. Of course my body was struggling. The healer had warned me that the third trimester could bring new symptoms. I filed the dizziness under that category and moved on.

The nausea arrived the following evening, low and persistent, the kind that does not announce itself dramatically but simply settles in and refuses to leave. I ate less. I drank more water. I kept my face composed at the table because I still came to the table — I was not going to disappear from my own pack house by degrees, not yet, not until I chose to.

Across the hall, Alexis watched me with the particular attention of someone waiting for something specific to happen.

I noticed that too.

But I had not yet understood what it meant.

---

My wolf was quieter.

That was the thing I could not fully account for. The Alpha-tone suppression I understood — I had lived inside it for days now, felt its edges, learned its texture. It was a cage, and I knew the shape of a cage. But this was something else. A muffling. Like the distance between my wolf and the surface of my own consciousness had grown, the way a voice sounds different when it travels through water. She was still there. She still pushed, still raged in the slow, exhausted way of something that has been fighting too long. But she was dimmer.

I sat with that for a long time one afternoon, my hand flat on my belly, feeling the pup move in her small, steady way. I tried to reach my wolf — not to push against the Alpha-tone lock, just to touch her, the way I had learned to as a child. The contact came back faint and far away, like a hand pressed against glass.

I did not know yet what was being done to me.

But something in the oldest, quietest part of me had already started to understand that the weakness was not mine.

---

Sera noticed before I did.

I saw it in the way she handled my morning cup — the slight pause before she set it on the tray, her nose tilting almost imperceptibly toward the steam. She had been my attendant for four years. I knew every habit she had, and she had never once hesitated over the tonic. It was a gesture so small that anyone else would have missed it entirely. I did not miss it. I simply did not yet know what to do with it.

She said nothing. She brought the cup. She left the room.

I drank it, because I did not yet know not to.

---

Nolan had not come to the upper wing in four days.

I knew this not because I was watching for him but because the pack house had a rhythm, and I had spent five years learning every beat of it. His footsteps on the main stair. The particular sound of his office door. The way the warriors in the corridor straightened when he passed. None of it reached the upper wing anymore. He had rerouted himself entirely, the way water finds a new channel around an obstacle, and I was apparently the obstacle.

Desmond Hale came to the upper landing on the fourth afternoon. He stopped at the threshold of the corridor without coming further, which told me he had not been sent — he had come on his own, which cost him something, and he knew it.

"Luna." He said the word carefully, the way you say a word you're not sure you're still permitted to use.

"Beta Hale."

He looked at his hands for a moment. Then: "The Ashfen renewal. It's in three weeks. I can't find the renegotiation terms anywhere in the office."

"No," I said. "You wouldn't."

A long pause. He looked up at me, and what was in his face was not anger. It was something closer to recognition — the expression of a man who has just understood something he had been not-understanding on purpose for quite some time.

"Is there anything—" He stopped. Started again. "Is there anything you need, Luna."

It was not quite a question. It was the closest thing to an apology the pack hierarchy permitted him to offer.

I looked at him for a moment. Then I said, quietly: "Keep your records current, Desmond. All of them."

He held my gaze. Nodded once. And walked back down the stairs without another word.

I turned back to the window. Below, in the training yard, the warriors ran their drills in the late afternoon light, and my wolf pressed faintly against her cage, and the dizziness came again, softer this time, like something settling in for a long stay.

I gripped the windowsill and I waited for it to pass.
