Chapter 1

The contraction hit at 10:14, and I knew because I was staring at the clock on the birthing den wall when the bond broke.

Not broke. Shattered.

Archer's voice came through the wall first—formal, ceremonial, every syllable clear. "I, Archer Graves, Alpha of Ironvale, reject you, Briar Ashwood, as my mate and Luna."

The pain didn't start in my chest. It started in the mark on my neck—the one he'd given me seven years ago under a summer moon when I still believed fated meant forever. It went cold first. Then empty. Then it felt like someone had taken a hook and ripped it out through my spine.

I screamed.

Every wolf in the great hall heard it. I know because the ceremonial drums stopped mid-beat.

My son was coming. The contraction didn't care that the bond was tearing itself out of my cells. My body was doing two impossible things at once, and I couldn't tell which one was killing me faster.

I pressed my forearm against my mouth and bit down. The crescent-shaped birthmark on my wrist pressed into my teeth. I tasted copper.

Through the wall, I heard Skyla's soft gasp—performative, breathy, exactly the sound a she-wolf makes when an Alpha's teeth sink into her neck. The marking bite. His teeth in her skin where mine used to be.

The bond severed completely.

It felt like a door slamming shut in an empty room. The space where Archer's presence had lived for seven years went silent. Not quiet. Silent. The kind of silence that meant nothing would ever fill it again.

I delivered my son alone.

His first cry was small and strong, and I pulled him onto my chest with shaking hands. He was perfect. Dark hair, already thick. His eyes hadn't opened yet, but I could smell him—milk and new skin and something deeper, something that smelled like pack even though the pack had just thrown us away.

I wrapped him in the thin blanket someone had left folded on the chair. My hands were still shaking. The bond-sickness was crawling up my ribs like frost, making my lungs tight, making my vision gray at the edges.

I pressed my thumb against the birthmark on my wrist. An old habit. I'd done it since I was a child, back when I was just the nameless Omega girl who scrubbed floors and kept her head down. It steadied me then. It steadied me now.

Outside, the ceremony continued. I could hear the pack's voices rising in the traditional chant. They were celebrating. Archer had a new Luna. A real one. A she-wolf who could shift.

I looked down at my son. "We're going to be fine," I whispered. My voice cracked. I cleared my throat and said it again, steadier. "We're going to be fine."

I almost believed it.

Then the door opened.

Former Luna Miriam stepped into the birthing den carrying a clay cup. She was dressed for the ceremony—pale blue silk, her hair pinned with silver combs. She smiled at me. Warm. Maternal. Concerned.

"Briar, dear." Her voice was soft. "You poor thing. Let me help."

She crossed the room and set the cup on the small table beside the bed. Steam rose from the liquid inside. It smelled like chamomile and honey and something sharper underneath.

"The healer sent this," Miriam said. She picked up the cup and held it out to me. "It'll help with the pain. Bond-severance is hard on the body. You need to keep your strength up for the baby."

I stared at the cup.

Miriam's smile didn't waver. "Drink, sweetheart. You'll feel better."

I reached for it. My hand was still shaking. I brought the cup to my lips.

That's when my wolf moved.

She'd been silent for seven years. Dormant. Hollow. The pack called me the hollow Luna because my wolf never woke, never spoke, never gave me the strength an Alpha's mate was supposed to have.

She woke now.

The snarl erupted inside my skull—guttural, feral, older than language. It wasn't a word. It was a warning.

I froze.

The scent hit me a half-second later. Beneath the chamomile, beneath the honey, there was something acrid and metallic. Crushed silver. Just a trace. Just enough.

I looked up at Miriam.

She was still smiling.

I tilted my head back like I was drinking. Let the liquid touch my lips. Then I turned my face into the pillow and spat it into the bedding, coughing like I was choking it down.

Miriam's hand came to rest on my shoulder. Gentle. Maternal.

"There," she said softly. "Good girl."

She stayed for three more minutes. Smoothed my hair. Tucked the blanket around my son. Told me to rest.

Then she left.

I waited until her footsteps faded down the hall. Then I pulled the pillow away from my face and stared at the wet stain on the fabric. The liquid had already started to dry, leaving a faint gray residue.

Silver.

She'd tried to kill me.

I looked down at my son. He was asleep against my chest, his tiny hand curled against my collarbone. His heartbeat was steady and strong.

The bond-sickness was pulling at me, trying to drag me under. My body wanted to collapse. It wanted to break.

I pressed my thumb against the birthmark on my wrist and made a decision.

I wasn't going to collapse. I wasn't going to beg. I wasn't going to run.

I was going to dismantle them.

Not with my hands. Not with rage. With the law. The Lycan Council's bond-law authority. Institutional vindication. Permanent. Total.

I knew the patrol schedule. I'd memorized it months ago when I was still pretending to be the obedient Luna who only cared about pack logistics. There was a twelve-minute gap on the eastern border every third night. Tonight was the third night.

I knew a border runner. Dessa Wren. I'd warned her about a Silverfang ambush six months ago, and she'd told me she owed me a life-debt.

I had evidence. The silver residue in the bedding. I could scrape it into something, seal it, send it with Dessa.

I had a son who deserved better than a pack that had just tried to erase his mother.

I looked at the clock. 11:47.

I had time.

I shifted my son carefully onto the bed beside me and pushed myself upright. My legs shook. The bond-sickness made everything feel like I was moving through water.

I didn't care.

I found a small glass vial in the healer's cabinet—left over from some tincture, still sealed. I used the edge of a spoon to scrape the dried silver residue from the pillow into the vial. My hands were steadier now.

When I was done, I sealed the vial and tucked it into the inner pocket of my robe.

Then I lay back down beside my son and waited for the hall outside to go quiet.
