Chapter 3

The walk back to the basement took a long time.

Not because it was far. It was maybe forty steps from the main hall to the stairwell, and another twenty down. But the Alpha tone was still living in my muscles, and every joint felt like it belonged to someone else. My knees remembered kneeling. My throat remembered the shape of the word *Luna* in my own voice, and it kept trying to say it again on its own.

I sat on the cot.

I put both hands flat on my thighs and waited for the compulsion to drain out. It didn't drain, exactly. It thinned. Like frost lifting off a window in sections, until I could see through myself again.

When I could feel my own feet, I put one hand flat against my sternum, over the bone.

Inside the hollow, something was pacing.

Not Sera the way I remembered her—not that bright, humming, singing thing that had lived under my ribs for ten years. Something angrier. Something with its shoulders low. It walked the walls of the dark room where she used to be, and every few steps it hit the wall hard enough that I felt the shudder in my back teeth.

*I know*, I said inside my own chest. I didn't say it out loud. I said it the way you speak to something that has been buried too long to trust words yet. *I know. I know.*

The pacing didn't stop. But it changed shape—slowed, listened.

I didn't have a name for it. I didn't try to give it one.

I closed my eyes and started the letter.

I kept it in my head because paper could be searched. I built it the way Mabel had taught me to clean a floor—start from the place you can't retreat to. I laid down the ceremony first, word for word, Emmett's rejection vow in the exact syllables he'd used. Then the mark going cold. Then the reassignment paper. Then the wolfhound in the frost-stiff grass beyond the wards.

Then today.

*Alpha Emmett Voss, at approximately fourteen-twenty hours, three days after the rejection ceremony, in his private office, issued an Alpha-tone command to Lauren Ashford compelling her to kneel before Ivory Perez and address her as Luna. Command was issued in response to Ashford's verbal question. Witnesses to the compelled kneeling: two pack members near the main hall fireplace, identities to follow.*

I added the exact words. I added the vibration in the floor. I added the specific pressure at the back of the neck.

The thing under my ribs pressed against the wall and held there.

---

Laundry duty started at five the next morning.

The washing rooms sat off the kitchen corridor, near the delivery entrance where the meat and grain came in before dawn. I liked the rotation because it gave me legitimate reason to be near a door that opened to the outside world, and because the noise of the machines made it hard for anyone to notice how long I stood in any one place.

I was folding sheets when I heard the voices.

One was Ivory's personal attendant—a thin woman named Priya whose scent I'd catalogued the first week. The other voice I didn't know. A man, low, unhurried. I moved one step closer to the door that separated the laundry from the delivery corridor and kept folding.

"—same as before," the man was saying. "Diluted. She said insurance dosage."

"Insurance against what."

"Not my question to ask."

A pause. A rustle. Something small changing hands.

I shifted, slow, until I could see through the crack between the door and the frame. A sealed parcel, brown paper, wax seal in a color I noted—dark green, pressed with a mark I couldn't read from that angle. The man's left hand had a scar running from the base of the thumb up under the cuff of his sleeve. Long. Old. The kind of scar a healer gets when they don't have another healer to stitch them.

Priya took the parcel and tucked it into the front of her apron.

"Same route back," she said.

"Same route."

He left through the delivery door. Priya went the other way, toward the servants' stairs that led up to the Luna suite. I counted to sixty and went back to the sheets.

I folded three more before my hands were steady enough to be certain of the fold.

Then I closed my eyes and added it to the letter. The scar. The seal color. The word *insurance*. The route Priya took up the servants' stairs. The time on the wall clock: five-forty-two.

Insurance against what.

Against me. Against something I might do, or something I might already know, or something someone else might tell me.

The pacing thing under my ribs went still and listening.

---

I saw Devon twice that day.

Once at ten, once at three. Both times he went into Emmett's office and both times he was inside for less than fifteen minutes. I noticed because I was cleaning the corridor floor the second time, and I heard the door open and close, and I looked up before I could stop myself.

Devon walked past me without seeing me. His hand was in his coat pocket. Something in the pocket clinked once—metal on metal, a small, specific sound, heavier than coin should be.

I didn't turn to watch him go.

A minute later, Emmett came out of the office. He stopped in the corridor to speak to Roland about something I couldn't hear. I kept my head down, kept the mop moving.

But I looked up once. Just once. At his face.

He wasn't troubled. That was the thing I noted, the thing I folded carefully and put next to the scar and the wax seal and the servants' stairs.

He looked resolved.

Whatever Devon had brought into that office, whatever they had decided, Emmett had already stopped being uncertain about it.

I wrung the mop. I moved to the next section of floor. Inside my chest, the thing that wasn't quite Sera walked to the wall and put its shoulder against it and waited.
