Chapter 4

The alarm hit at two in the morning—a low, rolling pulse from the perimeter that I felt in my teeth before I heard it with my ears.

I was already sitting up on the cot when the basement door opened. Roland filled the frame, his face arranged into the specific blankness he wore when he was following orders he hadn't written.

"Omega safety protocol," he said. "You stay down here."

"My mother is in the Elder quarters."

"You stay down here."

He closed the door. I heard the bolt slide home.

I hit the door with both palms. Then with my fist. I screamed Mabel's name until my throat was raw and the sound came back at me off concrete walls and I understood that no one upstairs was going to hear me over the howls outside—the crash of something heavy against the outer ward, the sound of a fight that was fast and brutal and over too quickly. Real rogue incursions lasted longer. I knew that from pack training. They lasted longer because rogues were hungry and desperate and didn't stop for strategy.

This one stopped.

I sat on the floor with my back against the door and listened to the silence settle in.

---

Roland opened the door at dawn.

He didn't say anything at first. He didn't need to. I had learned to read his face by then—the particular stillness it went to when he was delivering something he'd been told to deliver in a specific way.

"Mabel Ashford," he said, "died in the Elder quarters during the incursion. Pack healer attended. She did not suffer."

The last part was something someone had told him to add. I could hear the seam of it.

"I want to see her."

"That's not possible at this time."

"She's my mother."

"You may attend the memorial howl." He paused. "That's what I've been authorized to offer."

I looked at him for a long moment. He looked at the wall just past my left ear.

"Okay," I said.

He left. I sat back down on the cot and put both hands flat on my knees and stayed very still, because the thing under my ribs was not pacing anymore. It had gone completely quiet, the way an animal goes quiet before it does something that can't be undone.

---

The memorial howl was held at dusk in the eastern clearing.

I stood with the Omegas at the back. The pack formed in concentric rings by rank, the way tradition required, and I was in the outermost ring with my hands clasped in front of me. The light was going orange and flat. Someone had arranged Mabel's ceremonial urn on a stone at the front of the assembly, and I kept my eyes on it.

Ivory stepped forward.

She was in full Luna regalia—dark silk, Emmett's mark visible above her collar, her hair arranged perfectly. She lifted the urn with both hands and I thought, for one moment, that she was going to do it correctly. That even she would not do this incorrectly.

She tipped the urn downward.

Not into the wind. Not upward, the way the ash-scattering tradition required, releasing the wolf's spirit to the sky. Downward. Onto the ground at her own feet. A casual, almost bored tilt of the wrists, like emptying a cup of cold tea.

The sound I made was not a word.

I was moving before I had decided to move. I felt the distance between me and the front of the assembly closing—three steps, four—and I heard someone say my name, and then Roland's hands were on both my arms from behind, locking me back, and I was fighting him with everything I had, which wasn't much, and it didn't matter, and I was still making that sound.

From the Alpha platform, Emmett's voice came down in the Alpha tone.

"Devon Perez acted in pack defense during an unprovoked rogue incursion." Even. Authoritative. Final. "The pack honors its defenders."

I stopped fighting Roland. Not because the tone compelled me—I was too far past compulsion for that. I stopped because I looked at the faces around me. The pack, three hundred wolves in concentric rings, and some of them were looking at the ground, and some were looking at the sky, and none of them were going to speak.

Roland walked me back to the Omega line. His grip on my arms was not rough. That was almost worse.

---

Late that night, Roland returned a box of personal items to the basement. He set it on the floor without explanation and left.

I went through it slowly. A few books. A spare pair of boots. A folded cloth. At the bottom, an envelope in Mabel's handwriting—the careful, upright script she'd had on her good days.

I opened it.

The letter began with a name.

Not Lauren. A different name, written in Mabel's hand, in the same careful upright script she used when she was certain of something. A name I had never heard her say. A name I didn't recognize.

I read it once. I could not read further.

I folded the letter along its original creases. I bent down and pressed it flat against the inside of my boot, against the arch of my foot, where I would feel it with every step.

I straightened up.

Outside the high barred window, the pack was quiet. The moon was still up. The ashes were on the ground.

I reached inside my chest—not for Sera, not for the pacing thing, but for the letter I had been building in my head for weeks. I found it exactly where I had left it.

I added Mabel's name to it. I added Devon's. I added the way the ashes had fallen.

Then I added the name at the top of the letter. The name I didn't recognize. The name that was mine.
