My Alpha Rejected Me for His Fake Pregnant Luna Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, in front of two hundred wolves.

I stood at the front of the great hall, still catching my breath from the Silverfang Alpha's toast. My fingers ached from months of negotiation letters. My feet hurt in the heels Lucy had insisted I wear. But I was smiling. This alliance was mine. I'd brokered every clause, smoothed every territorial dispute, sat through fourteen rounds of talks while Dallas sent his regrets. Tonight was supposed to be the night he finally saw me.

Dallas stepped into the center of the hall. The crowd quieted. He wasn't looking at me.

"I have an announcement," he said.

My wolf Lyra stirred, uneasy. Something in his voice was wrong—too flat, too rehearsed.

Dallas's jaw set. He angled his chin up slightly, the way he always did when he'd already decided something and didn't want to hear otherwise.

"I, Dallas Reed, Alpha of the Ironclad Pack, reject you, Arielle Mills, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold first. Then hollow. Like someone had scooped out the space beneath my skin and left nothing but air.

Lyra howled. The sound tore through my chest, ripping from the inside out. My knees buckled. I grabbed the edge of the table to stay upright.

The bond wasn't just breaking. It was collapsing backward through seven years of one-way devotion, every ounce of strength I'd poured into a channel that only ran from me to him—now severing all at once.

Heat flooded my abdomen. Wrong heat. Wet heat.

I pressed one hand low on my stomach. My fingers came away red.

No one moved.

Dallas turned to his right. Rosie Payne stepped forward, her hand already tucked into his. She wore a pale blue dress that clung to her curves. Her other hand rested on her stomach in that careful, protective way pregnant women do.

She smiled at the crowd. Soft. Trembling. Perfect.

"I'm honored to stand as your Luna," she said.

The wolves erupted in polite applause. Not loud. Not enthusiastic. But enough.

I couldn't breathe. The hemorrhage was spreading, soaking through the waistband of my dress. My vision blurred at the edges.

Lyra surged. She shouldn't have had the strength—the bond severance should have knocked her flat—but she forced heat through my chest anyway, just enough to keep me standing.

And in that moment, with my wolf's senses sharpened by pain, I caught it.

Rosie's scent.

It was wrong.

Pregnancy has a scent—warm, layered, slightly sweet, threaded with the hormone shifts that come with carrying a pup. Rosie's scent had the sweetness, but it was too uniform. Too perfect. Like someone had bottled the idea of pregnancy and sprayed it on.

Chemical.

I pressed my fingertips to the dead mark on my neck. The skin was cold under my touch, like touching a scar that had never healed right.

Across the hall, Cynthia stood behind her son. She wasn't smiling, exactly. But her mouth curved in satisfaction. She met my eyes and tilted her head, just slightly.

I could have said something. Could have screamed, collapsed, begged.

I didn't.

I turned. I walked.

Every step sent a fresh wave of blood down my legs, but I kept my spine straight and my chin level. I walked past the Silverfang delegation. Past the Ironclad wolves who had eaten at my table and trained under my watch. Past Dallas, who didn't even turn his head.

I made it to the corridor before my knees gave out.

I caught myself on the wall, gasping. The hemorrhage was worse now. My dress was ruined. My wolf was screaming.

I had to move. Had to get to Maren.

The pack healer's room was three doors down. I stumbled toward it, one hand pressed to my stomach, the other trailing along the wall for balance.

Maren looked up when I pushed through the door. Her eyes went wide.

"Luna—"

"Don't," I said. My voice came out hoarse. "Don't call me that."

She was already moving, pulling supplies from the cabinet. "Sit. Now."

I collapsed onto the exam table. Maren's hands were steady as she pressed a cloth to my abdomen, but her face was pale.

"You're hemorrhaging," she said quietly. "From the bond severance."

"I know." I grabbed her wrist. "Check the pup."

Maren froze. "You're—"

"Check."

She placed both hands on my stomach, her eyes unfocused as she reached for the healer's sense that let her read a body's internal state. Her wolf was weak—she'd never been a fighter—but her healing gift was sharp.

Seconds stretched.

"The pup is alive," she whispered finally. "Viable. But barely. If the hemorrhage doesn't stop—"

"It will." I forced the words out through gritted teeth. Lyra was already pouring what little strength she had left into knitting the internal damage closed. It wouldn't hold for long, but it would hold for now.

Maren pulled her hands back. She was shaking.

"There's something else," she said.

I waited.

"Rosie's pregnancy." Maren's voice dropped to barely a whisper. "I've suspected for weeks. The scent is wrong. It's chemical. Manufactured. She's not carrying a pup."

I stared at her.

"You're sure?"

"I'd stake my healer's oath on it."

I closed my eyes. Two things Dallas didn't know: I was pregnant. And Rosie wasn't.

"Document it," I said. "Sealed record. Hide it."

Maren nodded, already moving toward her desk.

I slid off the table. My legs were steadier now. The hemorrhage had slowed to a trickle. Lyra was exhausted, but she was holding.

I turned toward the door—

—and the ceiling came down.

The beam hit me across the shoulders and drove me to the floor. I heard the crack before I felt the pain. Then the pain arrived, white-hot and total, and the hemorrhage opened again, worse than before.

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't move. The beam was too heavy.

Footsteps. Running.

Dallas's voice, sharp with command: "What happened?"

I tried to lift my head. Tried to reach toward him.

He stepped into the corridor. Saw me pinned. Saw the blood pooling under the debris.

Then he looked past me.

Rosie was standing near the wall, one hand pressed to her stomach, her face pale and stricken. She swayed.

"Dallas," she whispered. "I—I think—"

She collapsed.

Dallas moved. He stepped over me. His boot caught my reaching hand and shoved it aside.

He scooped Rosie into his arms and turned toward the hall.

"Maren!" he shouted. "Attend to my Luna!"

He was gone.

I lay in the rubble, vision darkening, Lyra screaming inside me with a fury that had nowhere to go.

Then I smelled it.

Wild pine and black iron. Something vast. Something certain.

Moving fast toward me.
