My Alpha Rejected Me for His Fake Mate
My Alpha Rejected Me for His Fake Mate Chapter 1
The mark on my neck died at 8:42 on the night of the Harvest Moon Feast.
Aiden stood at the head of the long oak table, looking past me. The air around him was thick with a cloying, chemical sweetness—a fake floral scent Elora Nichols had layered over her skin for months, drowning out my honeysuckle.
His phone buzzed in his palm. I saw his eyes glaze over with a private mind-link. A second later, he shoved his chair back. The wood scraped loudly against stone.
"I, Aiden Evans, Alpha of the Nightshade Pack, reject you, Saoirse Wood, as my mate and Luna."
The bond tore out of my chest like a barbed wire ripped through bone. The burning mark at the base of my throat went from white heat to dead ice, then hollowed into total emptiness, like a heavy iron door slamming shut in a deserted hall.
A brutal, white-hot spasm stabbed low in my abdomen.
Wet warmth soaked through my jeans, pooling against the cold flags. My unborn pup—the life I had guarded through months of border skirmishes—slipped away in the dark between my ribs.
Inside my mind, my dormant wolf let out one jagged, furious howl that rattled my teeth, clawing at my ribs in blind rage before the biological shock knocked her unconscious.
Aiden didn't even look down at the blood spreading across the floor. He stepped over the hem of my skirt and walked straight toward the double doors, where Elora stood clutching a shawl around her shoulders with trembling, practiced tears.
The thirty warriors I had drilled every dawn sat frozen at the tables. Nobody moved. Not one wolf I had bandaged or fed raised a hand. Nightshade’s Beta, Declan Hurst, stood three feet away. His tactical vest was tight, his hands flat at his sides. He stared straight past my shoulder, watching me bleed onto the stone, and did nothing.
"Get her to the holding cells," Aiden commanded over his shoulder, his voice vibrating with the harsh snap of an Alpha tone. "Clean the floor."
The command crashed against my skull, trying to force my forehead into the stone.
I didn't submit.
I dug my fingernails into the floorboards, tasted the copper rising in my throat, and shoved myself onto my feet. My knees trembled violently, but I locked them.
"Declan," I rasped.
The Beta's jaw tightened, but he didn't look at me.
"The automated locks on the eastern perimeter reset at midnight," I said, my voice dead and quiet. "The manual override codes are in my head. When the rogue packs test your fence tomorrow, don't bother looking for the logbooks. I burned them."
I didn't scream. I didn't ask Aiden why. I turned my back on the platters of roast meat I had spent eighteen hours preparing, pressed my palm against my bleeding stomach, and walked toward the exit.
Every border patrol route that kept this pack alive, every herbal remedy that saved their wounded, and every piece of defensive strategy that rebuilt their borders walked out into the rain with me.
I crossed the granite boundary stones marking Nightshade territory on my hands and knees. The moment my boots cleared the perimeter line, the last faint, sickening tether of the pack bond snapped.
Two miles down Route 9, on the muddy shoulder of the highway, my body gave up.
I hit the wet gravel, the rain blinding me. The cold was getting inside my lungs. My fingers went numb against the stones.
Then the air changed.
The low roar of a custom engine cut through the storm. High beams washed over the puddles, casting my shadow long and broken across the ditch. A black SUV slammed into park twenty yards away.
A heavy car door swung open. A man stepped into the deluge, tall and broad-shouldered, the rain instantly soaking his dark woolen coat. Before I could blink the water from my eyes, the wind shifted, and a scent slammed into my chest with the force of a battering ram—crushed cedarwood and the charged, ozone bite of an incoming thunderstorm.
It was thick. Dominant. Pure Lycan.
Magnus Grant stopped dead five feet from where I lay in the dirt.
His nostrils flared. His silver eyes widened, glowing with raw, untamed amber under the streetlamps. His chest expanded in one sharp, violent breath that hitched in his throat, and I felt the air vibrate as his inner beast slammed against his ribs with a single word that shook the rain around us:
*Mate.*
He moved faster than human eyes could track.
Instead of towering over me, he dropped to both knees in the mud. His massive hands slid under my shoulders and beneath my thighs, lifting me effortlessly against his chest. He pulled his terrifying aura inward so completely that it vanished, leaving only warm skin, steady breath, and the smell of thunderstorm to shield me from the freezing rain.
He pulled a phone from his coat with one hand and pressed it to his ear, his voice low, gravelly, and deadly calm.
"Isolde," Magnus commanded, turning back toward the SUV with my limp body cradled tight to his heart. "Sterilize the main clinic. Get every blood pack you have. Move."
Fifty miles behind us, at the dark edge of the Nightshade border, Declan Hurst's flashlight beam caught the empty pool of blood in the mud, his radio crackling with Aiden’s frantic voice demanding the codes to the collapsing gates.
