Chapter 3

The encrypted radio on my desk clicked on just after noon.

"He called me into the office," Marcus said. His voice was steady through the small speaker, but tight around the edges. "Hit me with the tone the second the door shut."

I leaned over the desk, listening closely. "Did you break?"

"My knees did. My mouth didn't," Marcus said with a dry, gravelly chuckle. "He leaned across his desk, demanded to know why I embarrassed him in front of Lily. I told him straight: my oath wasn't to Ironveil's title. I swore to Blair Ashford on the training mats five years ago. A personal oath doesn't transfer just because an Alpha issues an order."

I exhaled slowly, my chest tightening with respect for the man. "What did he do?"

"His jaw rolled," Marcus replied. "That left grind you always warned us about. He stripped my rank on the spot. Reassigned me to perimeter sweep on the eastern ridge. Mud and cold wind."

"He just showed the entire garrison how terrified he is," I said quietly. "You don't demote your best tactician over a hurt ego unless you're losing your grip."

"The boys saw it," Marcus said. "Nobody's looking at him the same way today. Stay sharp, Blair."

The line cut out.

I set the radio down and looked across the wide oak table. Prince Archer sat opposite me, surrounded by open folders, bank statements, and shipping manifests. For four days, we had barely left his study. We cross-referenced my logistics journal with his Lycan intelligence files, tracing every poisoned vial of refined wolfsbane Carter had funneled across neighboring pack borders.

The quiet in the room was heavy, but not uncomfortable. The problem was the air.

In the enclosed space, Archer’s scent was everywhere. It was rich cedar, cold earth, and a sharp, electric hum underneath that I couldn't name. It didn't make sense. For five years, Carter’s scent had smelled flat—like dry pine needles and burnt tallow. It had never stirred anything in me.

Archer’s scent did. Every time he shifted in his chair, the scent washed over me, tugging at a spot deep beneath my ribs where that strange, hot pulse had awakened on the night of the bonfire.

"Page fourteen," I said, clearing my throat and pointing at a freight receipt. "The delivery went to—"

The words caught in my throat. Archer had leaned forward to turn a page, his sleeve brushing my forearm. The heat rolled off his skin, sharp and magnetic. My voice simply vanished.

I froze, my pen hovering an inch above the paper.

Archer didn't tease me. He didn't make a smug Alpha remark. He just looked at my face with those deep, steady eyes. Slowly, without a word, he reached out and moved the brass candleholder two inches farther from my side of the desk.

The movement shifted the draft. Instead of blowing away, the warm air carried his cedar scent straight across my neck, right over the raw phantom ache of Carter's severed mark. It felt like a soothing hand over a burn.

"You were saying?" Archer murmured. His voice was velvet-rough.

"The delivery," I forced out, steadying my breath. "It went to the Frostpeak depot. Carter signed for the bearer bonds under an alias."

"Good," Archer said, making a neat note in the margin. His pen scratched rhythmically against the heavy paper. He knew what his presence was doing to me, but he gave me the grace of pretending he didn't.

By the fifth day, the cracks in Ironveil weren't just showing—they were widening into chasms.

I kept a backdoor open on Ironveil’s administrative server. Through my laptop, I watched Lily try to run a pack of three hundred wolves with nothing but a pair of designer heels and an attitude.

She had moved straight into my old office, clearly thinking that being Luna meant signing polished letters and enjoying high-table dinners. She had no idea I had spent twelve hours a day balancing supply chains, scheduling border rotations, and tracking emergency medical stores.

On Tuesday, two refrigerated meat shipments from the human distributors were turned away at the gate because Lily forgot to authorize the wire transfer.

On Thursday, a whole squad of night-shift warriors walked off duty at midnight because nobody had posted the roster rotation. The eastern border sat entirely unguarded for three hours.

Then came the real blow.

An urgent, red-flagged message landed in Carter’s inbox from Alpha Vance of the Red River Pack. The text was short, cold, and dripping with hostility:

*Alpha Voss: Our autumn territorial trade alliance expired forty-eight hours ago. We have received neither the standard renewal terms nor your courier. If our border rights are not confirmed by sundown, we will treat any Ironveil wolf near the river line as a hostile trespasser.*

Carter hadn't even known the treaty existed. I had renewed it quietly every October for four years over coffee with Vance’s Beta.

An hour later, Lily panicked.

Instead of admitting she had failed to manage the desk, an announcement went out to the entire pack via the internal noticeboard: *Former Luna Blair Ashford was removed from Ironveil territory following the discovery of a dangerous, contagious blood-rot.*

I stared at the screen, letting out a dry, bitter laugh.

She was trying to explain away my sudden disappearance and the chaotic state of the pack's operations in one breath. She wanted them to think Carter had protected them from a sick, useless orphan.

My phone chimed. A text from Marcus:

*She posted a lie about blood-sickness. Nobody bought it. Half the senior guards trained beside you in the mud for five years. They know you never missed a morning run. Lily is losing her mind, and Carter is drinking behind closed doors.*

I closed the laptop with a quiet snap.

"They're unraveling," I said to Archer.

Archer looked up from the council petition, a cold, dangerous smile touching his lips. "Then it’s time to call the tribunal. Let's see how Carter explains his rotting kingdom to the Lycan King."
