Chapter 4

By Saturday morning, the secure channel Marcus had set up pinged with three separate audio files and a scanned police report.

Lily’s polished facade was crumbling faster than expected.

From his exile post on the eastern ridge, Marcus had kept his ears open, picking up the quiet murmurs passing between patrol teams and visiting couriers. A Beta from the neighboring Pine Ridge Pack had casually remarked to one of our border guards that Lily’s father hadn't left her an estate; he had died drowning in gambling debts, leaving collectors circling her family name. Worse, a visiting Gamma’s mate recognized Lily in the Ironveil mess hall. Two years ago, Lily had visited the Timberfall Pack claiming to be the niece of a high-ranking elder—a completely different lineage than the one she had sold to Carter’s status-obsessed parents.

I listened to the voice notes, my expression never shifting. I didn't smile. I didn't savor the petty satisfaction of watching a rival drown in her own lies. Lily was just a symptom of Carter’s hollow pride.

I simply typed the dates, the witnesses, and the conflicting genealogies into the Council dossier. Cold, neat facts. When you build a case, you don't need anger; you just need paper that doesn't lie.

I slid the printed addendum across the desk to file it with the rest of the evidence. But as I pulled open the supplementary folder Archer had provided—the thick, wax-sealed file containing Lycan Council administrative records—a series of transaction stamps caught my eye.

I stopped.

I blinked at the black ink, pulling the parchment closer to the desk lamp.

The first was a formal injunction dated three years ago. Carter had drafted a quiet petition to strip my Luna title and demote me to Omega status, claiming I was "non-functional" due to my lack of a wolf. Had that gone through, I would have lost all legal rights, pack standing, and freedom of movement. But the petition had been killed in committee. It had been struck down by a sealed, high-ranking royal veto.

The digital signature at the base of the veto was an encrypted crest—a silver wolf curled around a black stone.

Archer’s personal sigil.

My heart gave a hard, hollow thud. My breath thinned.

My fingers turned the page on pure instinct. Next was an audit of the wolfsbane distribution. When Carter’s poisoned batches had hit the Red River and Frostpeak packs two winters ago, both packs had mysteriously received emergency shipments of refined silver-root antidote before the poison could claim a single life. The funds hadn't come from Council charity. They had been wired from an offshore private holding held under the name *A. Greystone*.

I stared at the black ink until the letters blurred.

For five years, I believed I had survived Ironveil entirely on my own grit. I thought my dawn-to-dusk discipline, my quiet alliances with the warriors, and my careful navigation of Carter’s moods had kept me breathing.

I closed the file. The heavy cardboard snapped against the mahogany desk like a gunshot.

The study fell dead quiet.

Archer looked up from his ledger. He held his gold fountain pen poised above the paper, his dark eyes instantly locking onto mine. He didn't ask what was wrong. He read my posture—stiff spine, hands flat on the desk, jaw tight—and slowly laid the pen aside.

"Blair?" he murmured.

"How long?" My voice was low. It didn't waver. It was flat, razor-sharp, and deadly calm.

He didn't feign ignorance. His gaze dropped to the sealed folder under my palms, and a subtle shift hardened the lines around his mouth. "Three years."

"Three years," I repeated, tasting the words. They tasted like ash. "You blocked Carter's Omega order. You paid for the antidotes that kept his border wars from erupting. You were inside my pack's business while I was bleeding on the training mats trying to earn an inch of respect."

"I was containing a disaster," Archer said evenly.

"You were managing my life!" The heat flared under my ribs—that strange, violent spark rearing up, rattling against my bones. I leaned over the desk, my eyes boring into his. "I thought I survived because I was smarter than Carter. I thought I kept those wolves alive with logistics and treaties. But you were standing behind the curtain, pulling the strings like I was some helpless piece on your board."

"You were never helpless," Archer said. He didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He stood up slowly, planting his hands on the desk, meeting me eye to eye. "And I never pulled your strings, Blair."

"Then what do you call this?" I shoved the file into his chest. "You made decisions for me!"

"I made decisions that kept you from an iron collar!" The sudden rumble in his chest wasn't an Alpha's demand for submission; it was pure, unvarnished friction. "If that Omega filing had passed, Carter would have owned you under ancient pack law. You couldn't have walked away. You couldn't have held property. You would have been pack property, locked in the compound basement."

"Then why didn't you tell me?" I demanded, my hands clenching into fists at my sides. "Why didn't you send word? Why let me spend five years thinking I was alone?"

"Because if I stepped in, it wouldn't have been your choice," Archer said, his voice dropping into a rough, aching cadence. "Carter took your dignity. He took your labor. He took your youth. If I had come in on a white horse, I would have taken your agency, too. I would have made you beholden to me. I refused to be another man telling you where you were allowed to stand."

His words hit me like a blow to the solar plexus.

I searched his face, desperately looking for arrogance, for pity, for the patronizing pride I had endured from Carter every day of my adult life.

There was none.

There was only a dark, simmering intensity—a devotion so patient, so stubborn, that it bordered on madness.

"I watched the borders," Archer said softly, stepping around the desk until he was barely a foot away. "I stopped the blows that would have killed you or caged you forever. But the rest? The warriors who love you? The supply chains you mastered? The dignity you carried out of that bonfire? That was yours, Blair. You built that out of dirt and blood. I never touched it."

My throat tightened, an unfamiliar ache clawing at my chest. I wanted to stay furious. Anger was clean; armor was safe. But Archer stood before me completely stripped of defenses, waiting for my judgment.

"What else?" I whispered, my voice raw. "Tell me every single thing you kept from me."

Archer met my gaze without looking away. "Ask. I will answer every word."
